A couple things. One, like someone mentioned, the horizon isn't straight. Two, the convergence of the horizon with the diagonal and the direction of the ship makes my eye funnel straight out. Your photo really draws my eye out of the frame as opposed to into it. Think about how you'd like the viewer's eyes to move across the photo when composing.

This is just me messing around with a high-ish shutter speed while giving my dog a bath:

The rule of thirds says that the point of interest in a photo should be located on one of the thirds lines. It could be one-third sky, or two-thirds sky (depending on what is more interesting). But it shouldn't be one-half sky, like you did.

If you Google rule of thirds, you'll find a bunch of explanations of it. Here are a few:

If anyone's interested in reading an issue of Popular Photography for free (and many other magazines) can do so by visiting this link with their iPhone or even Firefox browser. You will need to change your User Agent to: "Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419 (United States)" after you install this Firefox add-on.

Yes, Firefox + add-on does the job.

My friend took this picture in Prague and now she's getting it framed.

Can EDF help with some editing here? This is my poor attempt, just a little rotation, crop and borders:

What is your friend attempting to convey with this photo? Rather, what about it does she like that she wants to put it in a frame? I like your crop.

What are you going to use it for? SLR or point and shoot?

Sometimes the sky is more interesting than the landscape? Bad photography? I dunno, any specific ones you can cite?

Ok maybe a dumb question but what is the difference? I am assuming I have to focus and adjust settings on a SLR?

I don't like the spacing of the photo if your the sky is supposed to be the focal point, the traffic is too prominent.

meh what do I know?

Well, the point with an SLR is that you CAN manually focus and adjust settings, but could easily just set everything to full auto just like with a point and shoot. Additionally, you can change lenses with an SLR.

Depending on what you want, you could probably get either a point and shoot or an SLR in your price range.

Actually, you know plenty. You know what you see and you know what you like. A lot of photography and art in general creates a visceral response. Depending on your experience or knowledge you might know that you don't like or do like something, but maybe not have the vocabulary or knowledge of theory to explain why. Your opinion; however, is still valid regardless.

Now with regard to the photo in question, I'm not sure which one you're referring to. Is it this one?

Playing around with lomography, it is the first format that I've used that is square and not rectangular. Somewhere I read that as far as composition goes, you can do more with splitting the composition in half as opposed to thirds. Looking at the result here, I think you are right. I may be misapplying some concept I read about, but for me it's all a part of the process of learning. Thanks for the comments.

You could pick up an entry level Nikon or Canon DSLR for that price, but you will be stuck with the included lens, which will a limiting 18-55mm. Basically, there will be no zoom capability and not much of a widescreen capability. Might be a good starting point for portraits, architecture, etc. Lots of reviews of Canon Xti and Nikon D60 on Amazon.

On the other hand, you could also consider a higher end Canon like the S5 or G9 looks like Panasonic has some Lumix's with a lot of capabilities also.

dpreview.com should be a good resource for your researching.

I think this is dope. More traffic might have cluttered it a bit. Wouldn't change a thing.

Edit: maybe I'd crop it slightly differently, but other than that, awesome.

how would you crop it? i cropped it a ton and i wasn't sure. i centered the street and took out some distracting lights, then cropped some of the sky off to make it 1024x768
