There was a cool collection of the best photos posted on Reddit for 2012. Unfortunately not high-res, but some of them are really beautiful http://imgur.com/a/YAPNn

wtf that's the food blog you were talking about!? Didn't realize you were an OG 2+2er. Always nice to find another fellow Seattleite *edit* it's probable I misunderstood your post and you were just linking to SFG to show work you liked. If so, disregard the rest of this post

I think I read every post on your blog after finding it a year ago Really top-notch and inventive stuff. I was going to build your DIY circulator until I got a sick deal on a SVS.

Congrats on getting picked up by the MC team!

Did you GF get you the L version of the 100mm or the regular model? My 100mm 2.8L is my favorite lens ATM

Haha - that is not my blog, but I really like the stuff he does. That said, the guy is a pro, has been doing it for years, and iirc, won the 2011 Saveur 'best food photo' award for bloggers (might be wrong there, but I know he was one of the final few). I'm pretty jealous of him tbh, but he does a great job.

My blog is eatdrinkcheer.com, and (currently) focuses on the food I make and pictures I take.

My lens is the standard version. Then again, I have a T3 (non-"i" version), and as I've mentioned before, my gear is definitely not what's holding me back. I've been pretty amazed with it thus far, and put it to use this weekend shooting some fried eggplant with habanero-dill aioli and pickled shallots (doesn't look great but tastes amazing).

As I just got a vacuum sealer, I wanted to follow Scott's lead and try to get a decent shot of the before / after on the vacuum pickled shallots. Not the greatest, but

Re: The Photography Thread

Sadly, I really worked hard to try to light that first shot. I have a few metal clamp lights with these full spectrum bulbs, some sheets hung in front of some of them, along with some folded white cardstock to try to soften the shadow. Still, I can't quite seem to get it right.

I've read several food photography tutorials, and think I may need to pull the trigger on more lighting soon. Any suggestions for an off camera flash?

Yeah I realized after I made my post that you were just a fan like me.

580 EX ii can't go wrong. On the cheap end I'm happy with the extra yongho (or wtf its called) flash to supplement my 580. Hard to beat for the price.

If it's studio lights you're after then I can't help much. I've had my eyes on an AlienBees though

Have you considered making a cheap soft box to put the whole plate into? Can do it for cheap/free with cardboard box and tissue paper.

Re: The Photography Thread

Well I've posted most of them in here, but I finally went through the rest of my pics from my Death Valley trip in Feb.: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8913083...9818/lightbox/

I only worked on about the first dozen or so in Photoshop. The rest I just played around with in Picasa. Btw the Boost filter in Picasa is freaking awesome.

Going to Alaska/N. Yukon in a month. Hopefully to get some good pics of the Northern Lights and Tombstone Mtns. We're helicoptering in to the middle of nowhere - then hiking for 6 days. Should be challenging/rewarding. Hopefully I don't fall through the ice like I almost did in Oregon.

Download a trial of lightroom and see how you like it for pics you don't want to photoshop

Re: The Photography Thread

I've played with it. Seems like a lot more to learn than picasa - which I use to quickly scan through my pics anyway - and I can use to do most of what I want for pics I just want to put on Flickr (crop, bump the shadows and contrast, boost the color). What are the big selling points of Lightroom over picasa?

i think the main thing that makes it nice is you can spot touch up photos with all kinds of different effects and faders

And the library/selection process for pics is awesome. You can flag or reject, as well as assign a 1-5 rating, select 3-4 pics and see them all on the screen at once to select best in a series and a bunch of other useful cataloging features.

Quick adjustments are what lightroom was made for. You can get through pictures rapidly with small adjustments.

Re: The Photography Thread

Assuming you're shooting RAW images, if you're opening them in Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw has the same editing features as Lightroom. So, if you make a bunch of tweaks in ACR, you could do the same in Lightroom, plus have a catalog where you could add tags, keywords, rankings, etc.

The DOF you've chosen is pretty cool. It makes the upper top blend in w/the plate, like it's part of the design.

Nice plating.
