In addition to the current dSLR market losing share to APS-C mirrorless cameras, I don't think we are too many years away from wide commercial sale of dSLRs with sensors bigger than 35mm film. (These already exist but at too high a price point for a commercial product.) These will be targetted at those people who currently buy higher end "full-frame" dSLRs.

I think we are quite a few years from the optical viewfinder being replaced by an EVF in higher end cameras. The advantages of an optical vierwfinder for composition are just too great. I doubt that translucent fixed-mirror cameras are going to cut it in the serious photgrapher market any time soon, because of the light loss involved.
I think the market for "mirror-less" cameras will continue to grow, especially if we see Canon enter this division in the next several years.

I think the market for dSLRs will continue to grow too, as we will see the compact camera market shrink, with the "mirror-less" camera's taking the majority of their share from that market.

these systems are developing, the way I see it, the companies putting APS-C sensors in these smaller bodies is playing the game wrong, this isnt shrinking the system to be more compact, cause the same lenses are needed. the m 4/3rds camera's, as well as Nikon's 1 system seem to be more the direction I think this camera will go. using the smaller sensor allows for the smaller, more compact lenses, which is the point of the entire system. compact camera / interchangeable lenses

Would like to be able to do 1080p at 24fps, and definitely need full manual control in video mode.
My guess would be the d3200 but the right answer might be the new cannon t4i or to wait for the d5200.

In my opinion swivel screen is quite useful for video. So for canon 2 options: 60D, T3i. The 7D will output HDMI for external monitoring I think. Even the 5dmk2 doesn't do that iirc. The 7d will have the better build, but no swivel. The T3i might use crappier batteries? I am not sure. But I do know that the 60d battery hold more than the t2i.

So for video, you cannot go wrong with canon (going from t2i forward).

However, tons of people are going for Panasonic now a days, b/c you can shoot less compressed video. I think you can actually shoot RAW video. I am not as familiar with GH1 and GH2. But I do know that the GH1 has some powerful hacks (similar to canon's magic lantern). I am not sure if the GH2 has stable hacks released. Both have swivel screens.

So for video DSLRs, Panasonic and Canon are #1 and #2. The nikons are way more focused on still images. Now this dosn't mean that a nikon is worse. In fact, the D7000 is very sweet based on my research. You can totally buy a D7000 to use as a video dslr.

You'll get 24p on all of them, plus all the manual controls you want. And if you add magic lantern or Panasonic hack, you will get an insane amount of extra controls.

IMO, the more important thing is getting a decent lenses. You will want a good manual focus ring, and fast aperture. For example, shooting on my cannon 50mm 1.8 gives very nice shallow depth of field that looks filmic. Unfortunately the focus wheel is tiney, and so focusing manually kinda sucks. So I bought an Olympus lens adapter for my 60d, and am able to mount OM mount Olympus lenses on my canon. So the 50mm 1.4 Olympus I use is built very solid, with a nice big focus ring and is easy to work with for video. For images I use the canon, b/c imo the optics are a bit better, and it can autofocus.

One last thing to note: if you shoot w/ a 50mm on a crop (so like it would be maybe 72-80mm equivalent) hand held footage can be pretty damn shaky. So you might want to look into lenses w/ image stabilization or tripods. @ 50mm its managble, but if you got like an 85mm lens, that would be ~ 136mm, and it would be extremely hard to hold still for video.

Anyway, I really love shooting video.

If you want to keep it under $1k, the Panasonic Lumix GH2 is the way to go IMO. Technically, it is not a DSLR, it is mirrorless, but has an electronic veiwfiender in addition to the fold out screen.

The hacks are absolutely incredible, and the only downside is that there are so many options that it can be a little overwhelming.

Unlocking the ISO up to 12800 is pretty amazing.

All but the 1st two pics were from a sports festival. That was the water dogs jumping event. That woman forced her poor dog to jump into the water twice even though it couldn't swim for ****. The women ended up falling in and the dog was getting out and shaking off. I thought it was a good revenge pic.

Re: The Photography Thread

I just got a D3100 to get started. Right now I'm mainly reading to learn about things like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and then going out to try things while changing settings to see how it affects the picture. Hopefully I'll have a general feel for what works well for certain situations then can tweak from there.

My first question is do you guys recommend that I use single point AF and select the focus point before each shot (I think this is how it works)?

Also, I see a lot of people recommending a prime lens. Is it better to practice on the kit lens for a while, then worry about that? Which one would be recommended to a beginner? I don't really have a specific area of interest yet, mainly kids and outdoors stuff.

Thanks for this thread, I am going to work my way through it. The photos I've seen so far are all great, hophopefully I can contribute some in the future.
