Re: The Photography Thread

just been backreading a few pages. filters are idiotic. i do this for a living and have never, nor will i ever, put a uv filter on one of my lenses. some of my lenses dont even support filters (i mostly use canon tilt shift lenses for my work). obviously polarizers and ND filters are a different story.

don't bother. it's like taking insurance in blackjack. in the highly unlikely event that the front element of a lens gets scratched, it's not going to effect image quality unless it's a complete gouge or crack, and only then when shooting into the sun.

use a lens hood and call it a day. that is more than adequate protection. uv filters are a scam, scam scam scam!

Re: The Photography Thread

skratchy those are incredible. We seriously need to go on a photo trip sometime. I would love to see your process in action, and hopefully could offer a few things of my own.

Re: The Photography Thread

Thanks guys. I think the light got a little too harsh before I found any good dunes compositions but it was hard enough to find any areas that weren't trampled with footsteps. I've seen much more epic shots from there that must have come after wind storms.

Suzzer: My "process" would sorely disappoint you. Wander around until something looks interesting click the shutter then move on and hopefully when i get home there is something to salvage. Rarely am i aware of the ones that actually end up best when im taking them. A friend lives in spokane so I will probably visit her in the next couple months and do a day or two photo tour with a photographer that is in that area whose work i like. Probably try to make the oregon coast sometime. There's tons of stuff in the northwest.

Thorleif thanks for the edit. I was confused and kept staring at it seeing if there was an abstract of something inappropriate in there. Thats just a tight crop rotation from this.

Re: The Photography Thread

Well your process sounds like mine. I've basically been wandering the US West since 2005 just taking pictures of everything, slowly learning more about real photography as I go. But still your eye blows me away, so I'm pretty sure it would be fun to talk shop for a few days. I'm going on another trip with that same photographer (that I did the Glacier trip with) in August - to N. Cascades/Crater Lake, and then hopefully a week in Banff on my own.

Scratchy, great stuff as usual. Really like the first one and the guy walking on the trail. I'm sure you've mentioned it before, but what are you shooting with?

If anyone wants to learn more about processing I found these to be helpful.

Nice. I've thought of doing a coffee table book of the urinal troughs of CA. I don't think you can build a new one, but they can be grandfathered in. So you don't see them that often, and when you do it's usually in a cool old bar with lots of character.
