Holy crap, incredible find. Especially since they belonged to your father. Will you please post scans of the photos you took when you get them developed?

Finally got to shoot something with the new big lens at my parents' house on New Year's Day. I needed to speed up the shutter a little more to get that good "freeze" of the wings, but these guys are fast, and I was getting tired of standing around.

Took some photos at the New Year's Eve celebration at Seattle Center. Here are some shots of the lame fireworks display:

I wanted to travel light so I was only carrying my Nifty Fifty (Canon 50mm 1.8) so all the shots were a little tight.

By-Tor -- Nice. Where are you shooting from? Do you have more access than the average spectactor?

Thanks!

For these smaller venues, we usually have either front row, or 2nd/3rd row on the isle so we can move around it needed.

For this, we were in the 3rd row on the right isle.

Most of my shots that night where with the 70-200L at ISO 1250, f/3.5

I had a good weekend short-stacking Omaha , so I'll be picking up a 24-70L 2.8 and either a 15mm 2.8 Fisheye or 10-22 EF-S this week so make life in the front rows a little easier.

Several lenses for the Pentax, but only one for the Nikon. They both seem to operate well, though I haven't had a chance to develop the film yet.

The Nikon is one of the first cameras Nikon made from their move from fully manual cameras to ones with programmed autoexposure. But it's one of their entry-level cameras, so it's not very well regarded. I actually haven't even tried the program mode, using it in manual mode, using the camera's meter. (I had to replace the camera's battery).

The Pentax is fully mechanical. It can take a battery for a meter, but I have no idea what size. So I was using it in sunny 16 mode the other day. Supposedly a real classic.

Any update on your 40d replacement? I thought I saw an update on your dpreview thread that it was shipping, but haven't seen anything since.

Hope it works out better then the original one.

Didn't realize I was being stalked on other sites

Amazon shipped it via 1-day shipping. FedEx this time, instead of UPS, and FedEx actually delivered it in 1-day.

Came to me fully operational. Camera works great. Glad I bought it. I haven't had a chance to use it for college basketball yet (the main reason I bought it), but I hope it performs better than my 350D (ton of out-of-focus shots last game.) Besides that, it handles much better than the 350D and has a much better screen. Those two aspects aren't worth $1200, but better AF performance is and everything I've read says it has great AF performance.

While Amazon messed around with me a bit, they came around in the end. I posted what happened in the DPReview thread, but to recap:

12/14: Purchase 40D on Amazon via 1-day shipping. Promised delivery date of 12/17

12/18: 40D arrives one day late and inoperable. Needless to say, I'm unhappy.

12/19: After some emails back and forth, Amazon refunds my 1-day shipping.

12/20: Send camera back to Amazon.

12/28: Get an email from Amazon saying that shipment of the replacement has been delayed. They don't tell me why. I send them an email asking for a reason.

12/29: Instead of giving me a reason, they just send me the new body. I still don't know why they delayed shipment, but I was out of town anyways, so it wasn't a big deal. Get the new camera on 12/31.

1/7: Place another order on Amazon (Sonicare toothbrush), so I guess I have faith in them.

A couple pics from my last trip to Cape Town, South Africa that I thought turned out well.

These were all taken from the top of Table Mountain, This first one was from the Cable car that takes you up to the top of the mountain:

This is a view of Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned:

Cape Towns City Centre and the Harbour:

Right side view of the mountain:

Left side view:

Signal Hill:

This is some coastal view from an old fishing town called Hermanus which is famous for whale watching which happens one month a year.

I'm impressed. These kinds of shots aren't always easy to get given the light and subject in motion that you can't control.

I understand that the 10-22/24-70/70-200 triple-threat is a very successful, popular, and excellent combination. I have the first two and hope to get the 70-200 eventually.

Very cool shots. Thanks for sharing.

This one is my favorite for both it's color as well as it's prime beer drinking locations on the cliffs in the little caves.

Glad it worked out ok. Hope you have better luck with the toothbrush, but if not, at least the story would have the makings of a great OOT thread!

I have a general question which may be stupid and an internet-forums-related question that for sure is stupid.

1) For those people who do not have "sealed" digital cameras, what are the worst conditions under which you felt comfortable shooting? Mist? Drizzle? Light rain? Did you experience any problems?

2) Those BBV4L/OOT girl-in-the-mirror shots...if they're taken with a p&s (as opposed to a camera phone) why are they not using the timer to get a better picture?

1) Sand. In any weird conditions I just try to keep the camera under my coat most of the time and shoot really fast.

My camera is "weather sealed" and I'm still cautious as hell in even a mist.

Pick up some of these...

Most people don't even bother to read the manuals for their camera, so they wouldn't know about self-timer mode.

Plus, it's harder to use even if you know how to use it. You have to take a picture, then look at the framing, then re-take if it's off. With the mirror shot, you just look in the viewfinder until it's correct, then hit the shutter button.

Just pulled the trigger on a 24-70L and 10-22 EF-S.

Couldn't resist the $984 deal on the 24-70L at B&H.

Check the Super Coupon page for other deals there right now if you haven't seen it already...

I'm trying to take my first HDR pics with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 and Photomatix. However the auto bracketing only allows me to make the exposure +/- 1 EV at most. This is from the Photomatix guide:

Quote:
You may have to change the exposures manually if your camera does not bracket in steps greater than 1
How do I make it manually?

Keep the aperture the same and adjust the shutter speed in two stop increments. (You don't want the DOF to change, which is why you don't adjust the aperture.)

E.g., let's say that the "proper" exposure is 1/250 @ f/8. Then you would use Manual mode and set the aperture for f/8. Take one frame at 1/250, one frame at 1/60, one at 1/1000 (if you wanted a +/- 2 stops).

Speaking of HDR, here's my first attempt. I'm not happy of it because of some ghosting (check out the Leinart and Boldin jerseys).

Technical information: Obviously taken at an Arizona Cardinals game. I used my Canon 350D with a (rented) 10-22 lens set at 10 mm. The 3 exposures are 1 2/3 stops apart: 1/60, 1/200, and 1/640. Processed using Photoshop CS3. It seems to have only used to of the photos for the HDR: I had hoped that the fans would be the +1 2/3 stop photo. Sky is obviously from the -1 2/3 stop photo.

gusmahler,

I have CS3, too. Would you recommend CS3 or Photomatix for generating HDR images? Also, should I shoot in raw or TIFF? I have the raw extension for CS3. My camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1.

Sorry for the n00b questions...

I talked to a german photographer from Reuters and he said:

"Once it rains things get wet. The camera will get wet. There's no stopping it. Raincover just keeps the moisture in the camera. Do not use a cover."

I've never used Photomatix, but I think it has a better reputation. But they have a free trial, so I'll download the trial version tonight and post a comparison of the same HDR.

I'd always heard that you should shoot in RAW for HDR, but I'm pretty sure that CS3 will HDR with any format it can open.
