anybody done the bottomless bloody/mimosa at mccrossens on saturdays/sundays?

also - sabrina's brunch menu is just wow! haven't gone there but one read through the menu and i wouldn't know what to order

Sabrinas is amazing. The french toast is ridiculously decadent, and the various savoury brunch options we all got were delicious as well.

Another great brunch place I went to was the on spring garden at like 4th? Cant remember the name, but cool atmosphere, amazing food. Highly recommend it as soon as I remember the name haha

Is lacroix brunch better than dinner? Weve got a gift card to redeem there, wondering whether to go for Brunch or dinner?

Edit: Its silk city

was it Honey's sit n eat? I was looking at their menu as well on Sunday - wasn't quite as exquisite as Sabrina's (more typical brunch food) but i've heard good things

can't believe there aren't more bottomless places in Philly for Saturday/Sunday brunch (I think King's Oak or something does it in NoLibs) but a lot of places are BYOB that I've run into.. Especially Saturday there is barely a brunch to be found, period.. unless I'm missing something (yelp and google were no help)

Friday happy hour - I went to Davio's around 5 pm for a drink (was a good amount of people in the bar area but too many people because we couldn't get a seat which means no free apps sent your way which is what they usually do) so we had a drink a left... followed that up with Smith's - had the boneless wings, guac, and quesadilla.. food was decent for the price but nothing special.. then we hit up Franklin Mortgage - I had two drinks:

-BONANAZA JELLYBEAN
BUFFALO TRACE BOURBON, APPLETON VX, PUNT E MES, APEROL, FRESH LIME JUICE, HOUSE GINGER SYRUP, MINT, APRICOT PRESERVES, SERVED ON ROCKS WITH SODA

-COAL CRACKER COCKTAIL
WILD TURKEY RYE, GALLIANO, HOUSE BLACKBERRY SYRUP, ANGOSTURA BITTERS, SARSPARILLA TINCTURE, SERVED ON A ROCK

I really enjoyed those drinks, just strong enough for me but still a bit sweet and exotic..

Girlfriend got the Red Wedding 2 times she liked it so much:

-RED WEDDING
LAIRDS BONDED APPLEJACK, EL DORADO 12 YEAR RUM, FRESH LEMON JUICE, MULLED WINE SYRUP, ORANGE, PEYCHAUDS AND ANGOSTURA BITTERS, SERVED TALL WITH CRUSHED ICE)

We really liked the ambiance/feel although it's dark in there, really dark... almost had me feeling sleepy considering we had been out a few hours at this point. I also can't believe how many times I've walked by this place and didn't know it was there, the # must be above 100 times...

From there we hit up Cav's Ritt for some more snacks (their wings are really good - Cav's sauce) and picklebacks (bad idea) - at this point things got pretty fuzzy we went to Public House for a bit but I was a level ahead of everyone there and bounced shortly after around 1 am..

So far the move to the city has been a good one

What time were you at FM and how packed was it. I've always intentionally gone at non-peak times so I am curious.

Any dim sum connoisseurs? Looking for solid Hong Kong style dim sum for a Saturday or Sunday morning. Carts or menu both fine.

I was at FM around 7, 1-2 open tables at the time; we were seated immediately (3 of us)

Haven't had brunch at Lacroix in a few years, but dinner there is consistently great.

Bluefin has some of the best sushi in the area about 10mi north on Germantown Pike if you don't mind driving a bit. Def the best sushi in the burbs.

We were there at the same time. I was seated in the middle of the bar wearing a black polo. I hope you were the black guy in the group of 3 next to me.

Silk City @ 5th and Spring Garden has a very solid brunch with great bloody marys. Cheaper than Sabrinas though you don't get as much food. Much less of a wait, however, and they have outdoor seating which is great when the weather cooperates.

Didn't really get back near the bar area. Was concentrated on getting pretty drunk pounding old fashioneds on an empty stomach.

I know it's in the city, but Doma is in the city on 18th close to Callowhill and has very good sushi for a fairly affordable price.

Also I gotta knock Honey's a little bit. It is nowhere near as good as Sabrina's and the wait times are often worse on weekends at brunch time.

Day by Day on 21st and Sansom is also a good brunch spot. Wait isnt usually longer than 30 minutes.

+1. very good brunch, though we did have someone with a nut allergy end up with a whole bunch of walnuts in her salad. The owner came over and was really really visibly upset and tried to make it right, though. Handled extremely well even though it's completely unacceptable (which the owner said many, many times). Also we were waiting in line to pay, and the owner immediately pushed us ahead of everyone. She was really cool about everything.

I've had Bluefin many times and it's very good.

Someone recently recommended the Medusa rolls (shrimp tempura, avocado, spicy sprouts, spicy mayo, lump crab salad, wasabi mayo, red tabiko, scallion) at Doma to me. I haven't been there but generally trust their judgment.

Living in Manayunk now, I got a job working in Center City (Clothespin Building at 1500 Market). I really want to stay with my roommate next year, we've been friends for like 6-7 years, but he works out in KoP and I don't think he's switching jobs any time soon. Our lease is up in June so we're in discussion about moving to Center City. Once I start full-time in January (interning now) I'm going to be working like 60-70 hours a week, so I don't really want to pile a 30 minute train ride on top of each end of those days.

Anybody know how much worse the commute from Center City to KoP would be than the commute from Manayunk to KoP? Also, if anybody would like to have a drink in Center City area, I'm down there often Fridays after work, just drop me a PM.
10-21-2011 , 04:28 PM
Can't comment on the reverse commute like that, but I did do the KoP to CC for two summers and I did not enjoy taking the train all the time like that.

Goin to A.Kitchen again tonight for dinner with gf. Excited.
Probably goin to Tria before for cocktails

Also, went to Osteria with mom earlier this week. Got a roasted pig special which was off the charts. Mom got pizza, which I ate a good amount of, and that was obviously great. I also really liked the look of the bar there, too.

How 'bout a discussion of local golf courses? I've been to plenty of courses, but they're usually 30+ minutes away for anything good, although I'm playing Juniata tomorrow, but a friend booked it and I think it's garbage.

But most courses in the 'burbs I've played, but don't know many good south jersey places.
10-21-2011 , 05:01 PM
Scotland Run in Williamstown is phenomenal. Ron Jaworski's course River Winds in Deptford is also pretty nice. Both are a short drive into Jersey from the city (about 30 minutes).

There's really not much in the city worth talking about. Walnut Lane out in Roxborough and FDR in South Philly are probably your closest options but they are meh at best on a day with perfect weather.

Have you guys been to The Dandelion across the street from Tria? Was wondering if there was any there there.
10-22-2011 , 10:46 AM
Haven't been to Dandelion but heard good things. I hit up Prohibition bar on 13th and Spring Garden on Thursday night, the area is a little sketch and the bar is a little tucked away but it was an interesting spot. Only had a drink or two and left but may be a place to keep on the radar when you're looking for something different.
