Judges should be able to give both guys a loss for fights like that.

All,

Is there a reason why there is such a huge deal made over a few pound discrepancy in weight at every weight class except heavyweight? I would understand a few pounds making a bigger difference when it is a larger percentage of the total but it's you get to HW and suddenly 30lbs is a non issue. What's the deal?

Man its crazy the advantage a chin will give you. Perry should have been KO'd like 5 times already. Zero defense but can eat power shots with lil to no effect lol

My feeling is that it's part of the "mystique" of HW. The HW champ in combat sports is supposed to be the baddest man walking, and part of that is that after a certain weight, it's less about weight and more about power.

There's also the issue of weight cutting. Most HWs are assumed to fight at close to their normal weight, because unless you're Kimbo, you aren't cutting to make 265.

Is there truth to that? Is there a point where having 20lbs on someone is not a big advantage or less likely to be? Do you think they overvalue weight advantages for the other weight classes also?
10-08-2016 , 07:59 PM
Kind of hard to say since traditionally all the good athletes that are HW size and higher are in Football/basketball

Most of the really big guys that have competed in MMA have been slow lumbering bums, sans Lesnar who was able to be a top fighter with minimal training.

Oh no, I firmly believe that 20 lbs, even from 220 to 240 makes a difference, but I think that because it's a smaller percentage of the total at that weight, and because after a certain weight, pretty much everyone has KO power, it's something that combat sports over the years have just decided is no longer a determining factor.

Edit: On the topic of the lesser weight classes, I think it's a pretty big deal. Having a guy at 125 fight a dude at 145 is understandably likely to be a slaughter, so at lower weights, I think it's more of a point.

But what about 55 vs 70 compared to 230 vs 265? That is more what I'm wondering. The point about knockout power always being present makes sense though.

I think theres also diminishing returns with the trade off of strength and cardio.

Also with speed. Since almost everyone at 230+ has KO power, speed becomes more impotant.
10-08-2016 , 08:40 PM
I'm not totally sure what you're asking. The difference from 155 to 170 is ~10% of the 155ers weigh in weight. The difference in 230 to 265 is ~15% of the 230ers weight, so it's not entirely analogous. Regardless, I think the difference in the lighter fighters is probably more significant in a fight.

Consider also that the 265 guy is carrying a lot of weight and is likely to gas relatively easy unless he's a .01% physical freak.
10-08-2016 , 08:48 PM
You answered what I was asking. All that makes sense.

Lame. Tumenovs striking is so fun to watch. Hope he can get his grappling on track.
