Although I´m not really sure if it´s an obscure movie,
I really enjoyed GUMMO by Harmony Korine.

I´m a bit surprised no one hasn´t mentioned it yet.
That movie's pretty awful and not even close to "must see". "KIDS" is way way better but still not "must see".

advice for future posts:

if a movie is listed here, especially towards the top, then it likely is not obscure.

Saw a movie called Medium Cool for a film class I took one summer during high school. It is this weird mix of drama/documentary taking place during 1968, focusing on the Democratic Convention in Chicago that year. I haven't seen it since, so I might feel differently now, but I was absolutely blown away by it at age 17. At the very least, it's worth seeing for any modern U.S. history buff.
I didn't remember that I had seen this until I looked it up, and I agree that it is a very good movie about the 1968 riots and it is also legitimately obscure (only 714 votes on IMDB).

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies

Some more

Sunday Dinner for a Soldier (1944) - great wartime (life at home) movie

Barfly (1987)- Mickey Rourke's best performance as Charles Bukowski

In Cold Blood (1967)- excellent adaptation of Truman Capote's real-life crime novel

Evil Roy Slade (1972) - one of the funniest movies ever made.

Wake in Fright (Outback) (1971) - Best Australian film ever made in the opinion of some critics - but very hard to find and has not been widely viewed since it's release.

Please keep the leveling to bbv. Don't make me pull out "American Beauty".

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies

A couple of movies that I think not enough people have seen:

Le Grand Bleu, Luc Besson's early work before he started making total crap.

Buffalo Soldiers, a recent movie which didn't get a whole lot of commercial success but I would easily put it into my list of greatest ever if i had such a list.

I actually disagree. I believe Festen and M are both on that list and I would guess that far fewer than 1% of people on this board have seen either one.

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies

1% might be a bit low but you have a point.
Although it should be noted that he said it LIKELY is not obscure.

FWIW - I've seen M.

It's mostly coming down to a semantics debate as to what qualifies as 'obscure'.

Take another movie on that list like Dog Day Afternoon (another one of my all-time faves, a young Al Pacino in a botched bank-robbery attempt).
I really don't think it should be counted as 'obscure' but I also suspect there are many people on this forum who have never seen or heard of it.

So in the context of this forum it counts as obscure.

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies

Here is a nice little movie that I think escaped most people.

Midnight Clear - Stars Ethan Hawke, Kevin Dillon, John McGinley among others. It is a war film that without battle scenes. It isn't perfect, but it is damned interesting. It is set late in 1944 in an undescribed forest in Germany. I have often wondered how interested I would be in killing the enemy if I knew we were looking at a matter of months until the war is over. Neither side in this remote corner of the war really wants to kill the other, but they also can't be sure of their enemy's intentions.

Citizen X - I am going to engage it what seems like hyperbole. There are three great serial killer movies that have ever been made. M, Silence of the Lambs and Citizen X. This is a made for HBO movie that never entered theaters. Stars Stephen Rea and Donald Sutherland. I was so entranced in this movie I actually started it again as soon as it was over. I love Stephen Rea, and he is perfect here.

The film is set in the Soviet Union as Communism is crumbling. It is based on a real case with Rea playing a police detective trying to capture a serial killer operating over several years and killing dozens of victims. Everything about this movie is fascinating, from the look at Soviet obstruction of the investigation, to the police work, to the killer himself. I am amazed that this was never shown in theaters. It really is a testament to the quality of HBO films.
