Apologies if already mentioned, but Nil By Mouth is a stunning film.

again it may just be my ignorance and this could be a well known movie but I found it to be original, visually pleasing, hilarious and touching.
this post still slays me every time.

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies

Man on the moon - I think one of Jim Carreys finest performances... He plays a standup comedian/showman , and no one gets his humour other than him and one of his closest friends... The more times I watch this movie, the more I discover...

Man Bites Dog - its a low budget french mockumetary, about a gangster who makes his living stealing and killing... If you Enjoy Dark humour/ satire , you will love this one...

Am not sure how obscure these movies are, But def must watch...

The Croupier is also a superb film if it has not been mentioned already.

Good call, not seen that in ages. £3.79 from Amazon too.

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies

Sorry if this has been posted I didn't read the entire thread but:

The Big Kahuna

Staring: Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito

Based on a play (pretty much is a play).

I really enjoyed it especially the performances by the leads.

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies

After reading a lot more of this thread I decided to post a few more that I don't think have been mentioned.

Sydney - Paul Thomas Andersons first feature film. Starring John C Reilly and Phillip Baker Hall (Samual L Jackson/Paltrow also in it). Really great and I got the PTA feel after the first few shots, he really has a unique visual style imo. Also known as Hard Eight.

Pump Up The Volume - Christian Slater as a rebellious teenage radio host.

Swear To Tell The Truth - Academy award winning documentary narrated by Robert Deniro about legendary comedian/freedom of speech martyr Lenny Bruce. However this is going to be very hard to find legitimately considering you can't purchase it because the music rights were just way to expensive (a lot of classic jazz tracks). I believe it's being showed weekly in some museum in NYC but I forget which exactly. Must see in my opinion and a shame it's not easily accessible.

Big Trouble in Little China - Probably the least obscure film I've mentioned, but it's just such a great action/comedy and there are so few similar movies that are on it's level. It accomplishes exactly what it sets out to and the Russell+Carpenter combo always delivers.

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies

Check out the God of Gamblers series. It's a Cantonese movie (with Chow Yun-Fat and Andy Lau) but hopefully you can find a subbed version.

It will make you want to gamble it up!

My favourite NZ film, can't really do it justice in words. Best if seen 'clean' (i.e. don't read past the first paragraph of the plot summary)

Also, not obscure in Aus/NZ but may be in other parts of the world:

Very haunting soundtrack
