Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
Central Station
I'd give the description but that wouldn't do justice.
City of God
Well, this one is not so obscure, but it's a must see.
Kontroll
I'm biased about this one because I speak Hungarian.
Edit: forgot Almodovar's (I thought Volver sucked by the way):
All about my mother

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
Quote:
I'm not sure if its obscure but a recently watched Harold and Maude with a friend which I had never heard of.
Quote:
Harold is a depressed, death-obsessed 20-year-old man-child who spends his free time attending funerals and committing suicide in front of his mother, but he does not die. At a funeral, Harold befriends Maude, a 79-year-old woman who has a zest for life. She and Harold spend much time together during which she exposes him to the wonders and possibilities of life. After rejecting his mother's three attempts to set him up with a potential wife, and committing fake suicide in front of all of them, Harold announces that he is to be married to Maude. However, Maude has a surprise for Harold that is to change his life forever.

again it may just be my ignorance and this could be a well known movie but I found it to be original, visually pleasing, hilarious and touching.

you should post this in the Anacardo thread

If Harold and Maude qualifies as obscure then Blue Velvet deserves a mention as well. I realize it was relatively big in its day and made a lot of critics top movies of the 1980's list, but I occasionally throw some pop culture trivia in on rounds with my medical students/residents and am constantly surprised at how many of them have never heard of it.
|
Yeah, me too.
I'll go ahead and vote for Blue Velvet as well on the same mind-set that it's about as not-obscure as Harold and Maude but that I'm a bit out of touch with what films have somehow faded into obscurity.
|
As a former nitrous-huffing sex freak I will also vote for Blue Velvet.

Obscure movie that was so horrible it was hilarious. Killing spree (1988?) Probably one of the lowest budget movies iv ever seen on video. Ordered something in the mail, this came instead. Really cheesy low budget horror movie with awesome lines like "you screwed my wife, so ill screw drive your head!" and then of course he drops a screw driver into the guys head which kills him.
|
This reminds me of one of my favorites, the Bill Hicks vehicle "Ninja Bachelor Party". It stars Hicks as some urban ninja, it's filmed on the streets and rooftops of Houston, with fake dubbing, and it's just an incredibly low-budget, cheesy movie, but it's hilarious.

Re: obscure MUST SEE movies
This likely doesn't qualify as unknown, but only one friend of mine out of 30 had seen it in college (until he showed it to all of us) but meh:
Boondock Saints:
Two Irish brothers accidentally killed mafia thugs. They turned themselves in and were released as heroes. They then see it as a calling by God and started knocking off mafia gang members one by one. Willem Dafoe plays the detective trying to figure out the killings, but the closer he was to catching the Irish brothers, the more he thinks the brothers are doing the right thing.

though it was done in the past 14 months, very few people have heard of The three burials of melquiades estrada. This is Tommy Lee Jones' directorial debut and really hits home and is well worth watching.

This movie is amazing. Written by same guy that wrote Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel.
Also, somewhat recent, but not seen or hyped enough is The Proposition. Nick Cave wrote this. Here's the plot outline from IMDB:
"Rural Australia in the late nineteenth century: Capt. Stanley and his men capture two of the four Burns brothers, Charlie and Mike. Their gang is held responsible for attacking the Hopkins farm, raping pregnant Mrs. Hopkins and murdering the whole family. Arthur Burns, the eldest brother and the gang's mastermind, remains at large has and has retreated to a mountain hideout. Capt. Stanley's proposition to Charlie is to gain pardon and - more importantly - save his beloved younger brother Mike from the gallows by finding and killing Arthur within nine days."
Both those movies are pretty heavy material, so I'd like to also suggest Schizopolis. Written, Directed, and Starring Steven Soderbergh it is absurd and hilarious. I'd give a plot outline, but I'm not 100% sure what the plot is.

Les Triplettes de Belleville
It won a bunch of awards in 2003, so maybe not obsure, but it is MUST SEE. A quirky animated feature.

Was about to post this myself. I absolutely loved it, but it may not be for everybody. Well...what is? It's a silent cartoon drawn in style that is very different from American cartoons, so your mileage will vary greatly.

I think maybe 1 in of 4 people I knew in college had a Boondock Saints poster (I was the first ) and maybe 1 in 3 owned the movie. At least 2/3 men and 1/3 women had seen it.
But it still kicks ass hard.
