It depends. Most NJ-side locations are fine, though there are cheaper hotels on the 1/9 for example that are very seedy. Many people stay around MetLife Stadium (e.g. in Harmon Meadow or on Paterson Plank Road), both have buses nearby. Jersey City also has some nice hotels near the water, which have the Path nearby, which is very fast into the city.

Note it will be extremely difficult to find a hotel in the MetLife Stadium area if you're coming in late January/very early Feb (around the Super Bowl).

Brooklyn widely varies, Brooklyn Heights is likely the safest, while Williamsburg depends on the North vs. South side (both are relatively safe, though as a tourist I'd feel better on the north side).

LES is mostly safe, though late at night as a tourist I could see yourself feeling uncomfortable on the far east or south side of the neighborhood.

Did you just list half of the Brooklyn lines as being ****ty and unreliable, and then claim that my generalization was crazy? :P

My generalization is mostly based on my coworkers living near Park Slope, and working from home like once a week for the past few months because they got tired of waiting for a train that never came. A lot of those lines also tend to do poorly during winter, since a lot of them are above ground, and severe snow conditions tend to close the lines down.

I'm currently living off the ABCD in upper manhattan, with the 1 pretty close to me, and the only time I've had trouble getting around on those was when the entire ABCD set of lines was shut down from 145th down to 59th :P

North Williamsburg is really safe, it's a hipster city though. Brooklyn Heights is a good one too. I'd rather stay there than in Jersey. Comes down to the price really.

I thought the G had gotten better recently?

I mean, it's still a ****ing farce that there's only one train that connects Brooklyn to the other part of Brooklyn, and makes it into a bit of Queens...

Easy solution: don't live in Brooklyn.

By far the best area to stay in is Pavonia/Newport area in Jersey City. There is a Westin, Marriot, and Doubletree Suites all in the same area, and the PATH gets you to midtown in less than 15 minutes. It is less than a five minute walk from all of the above hotels.

There is a nice Hyatt at Exchange Place, which is literally 3 minutes away from World Trade Center via PATH, which will be closer to SoHo. The area also has a ferry and good downtown bars which in itself is worth spending a night in, especially if you guys want to hit up some bars but aren't into clubs.

If you use Priceline, you will get a very good deal for very nice hotels. I remember before I found out about the whole Name Your Own Price thing, I wold pay $300+ for a room, and afterwards it was <$100 on non-weekends.

One of my favorite restaurants in the city is Bistro Petit--a tiny counter-service-only hybrid Korean/French place in Williamsburg: http://www.yelp.com/biz/bistro-petit-brooklyn . The food there is insanely good.

I'm mainly posting this because lately there's nobody else there, and the chef has taken some stuff off of the menu because sourcing the ingredients and then not using them wasn't worth it. It would be really sad if this place closed despite such obvious awesomeness.

I'll try this place soon. Seems right up my alley. Any recommendations from the menu?

Just scrolled through some yelp reviews and I'll probably give it a try too sometime. The Kimchi boullibase seems to be the consensus must try.

NYers,

Do you have any favorite sketch comedy groups or shows you see often at places like UCB/PIT/Magnet? I am already aware of how awesome Murderfist is!

The apps and sides are all amazing. I've loved the foie gras, the brussel sprouts, the truffle mac + cheese, and the fries. The bouillabaisse is definitely awesome, though I think I prefer the short rib. But, basically, I don't think I've had anything there that didn't surprise me by how good it was.

Oh, and fair warning: For whatever strange reason, they do not serve water. This is very strange. Bring a bottle of water.

Can somebody help me out here...many years ago I was reading, I think, this forum, and there was a guy who visited NYC and was going to spend a substantial amount of money purchasing an entire wardrobe. I think it was 2+2 and this subforum. He took pictures of the clothes/shoes he purchased and mentioned the stores. People gave a lot of feedback. It was an interesting read and I think a good thread for NYC clothing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thoughts on Zengo? It's Asian Latin fusion, kinda curious.

I had the tasting at the new chef's counter at The Elm (they call it the Little Elm). I am a Liebrandt fan and it didnt disappoint. I would say its comparable to what he served at Corton, which had 2 Michelin stars. Very refined flavors, felt a little subdued, but overall would definitely recommend as one of the better tastings in the city. I'm a noob and cant figure out how to upload pics without having to use a URL, or I would put up pics of each course and a TR.

Hmm, I'm going to NYC in February 2014 and I'll write the address down and visit it, just because you gave it such an awesome review. Which dish would you recommend?

Uh. Korea/French hybrid, in hipster-saturated Williamsburg, counter service only, doesn't serve water. This is approximately 3 idiosyncrasies more than will be tolerated by most people to support a restaurant, no matter how good the food.

I want to do a very good but sort of reasonably priced omakase dinner for my GF's birthday in a few weeks. I have limited experience with higher end sushi places, although i know a little. Cannot get a res at Tanoshi. Was thinking 15 East? Maybe Kura? Sushi Seki? Any other recommendations appreciated.

Probably already posted, but Pizza Suprema is the best pizza in the world, on 8th ave between 30th and 31st (adjacent to FIT, opposite MSG/Penn Station). Every time I've gone (midday) it was so crowded I had to share a booth with strangers.

Lombardi's on the corner of Spring and Mott in Little Italy is a great old school mob atmosphere -- very pricy for pizza though. You'll feel you're in 1924. Think opening scene to Godfather II. Paying for the atmosphere, I guess.

My friends and I went to Dempsey's pub for the World Cup 2010, probably will visit again for this one. It was literally a mosh pit all day long for USA games.

I am a sucker for Shakespeare in the Park.

As a kid . . . FAO Schwarz was heaven, haha.
