Weird. I was just thinking about how long it's been since I've eaten there and then I stumbled on this post.

I used to go there all the time in the wee hours after work with buddies and we'd order all kinds of crazy **** and share it. Downstairs, of course. Cheap and fun.

How does the fried chicken at Mono compare to Mad For Chicken/Bonchon?

They are actually the same place. Was known as Bonchon but the Korean chain of the same name has been opening stores in NYC and made them switch their name.

May have to check Mono.

Anyone recommend a decent broadway show? I was thinking about seeing Chicago because I enjoyed the movie, but from what I hear it sucks compared to the movie. Wicked seems fairly cheesy, but people love it.

Never seen the movie, but I enjoyed Chicago on Broadway. I saw it a long time ago, but especially enjoyed the music.

As for what's playing at the moment, I recently saw Time Stands Still with Laura Linney and it was excellent.

Chicago is very good and a lot of fun; the movie adaptation was OK but the live show is better. Haven't seen Wicked but the music is quite good.

A Little Night Music is playing right now starring Bernadette Peters, who is incredible. I don't particularly like "Send in the Clowns" but Peter's performance is one for the archives. The show is really very good; you can see Chicago or Wicked anytime but this one (at least with Peters) is scheduled to end in (IIRC) January.

If you are open to non-musicals, consider La Bete - supposed to be absolutely hilarious, my wife and daughter thought is was outstanding. Top notch cast, including David Hyde Pierce, but the real star is Mark Rylance whose performance is supposed to be remarkable.

Right now, though, I would absolutely choose to see Driving Miss Daisy. This is truly a once in a lifetime chance to see two legends - Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones - and really should not be missed. It only runs through January, so don't pass it up.

This is also a very solid choice, saw it in February. The rest of the cast (Alicia Silverstone has been replaced by Christina Ricci in the current run) is great as well.

I currently just graduated college and landed a job in NYC right near Grand Central. My total comp for my first year should be north of 65k. So I have a few questions.

Do you think it will be feasible to live in Manhattan on 65k? As an alternative, I can live with my parents for free and it would be ~1 hour commute to where I work, but I think there are some non-monetary considerations I would need to take into account as well.

Also, what are the best places to go to when money is a consideration?

Millions of people survive on far less than 65K per year. Definitely get a roommate, and then you'll be fine. You may want to consider an outer borough - something like Astoria (7 or N/R->456) or Brooklyn (456 or several connecting) have trains which run directly through Grand Central.

yeah if you don't have any debt 65k is plenty to live in NYC depending on your priorities. if you want to save a bunch of money and/or just like your folks well enough, living with them is fine. you could live in manhattan but would probably spend more on housing than is optimal, however if you were really interested in it for the experience or whatever it could be done. there are lots of neighborhoods in brooklyn or queens that are convenient to grand central by subway where you could live very well.

if i was single, young and working where you work i would probably live in park slope, prospect heights or sunset park, that's me though.

Bump.

I'm going to be in Connecticut with the kids this summer, and I'm thinking about a side trip to NYC. Probably three or four days.

The kids are 7 and 5. looking for recommendations for family-friendly activities, restaurants, and hotels in good locations in Manhattan. They enjoy museums, and we'll probably do a Yankees game if we can make the schedule line up with a home series. I'm thinking upper west side? I've never had the kids with me when I've been in NYC (and I've never really had any leisure time in the city anyway, so I'm flying a little blind here).

Upper West Side is good for museums (Natural History is right there, lot of other museums are across the park), and you can jump right on the subway up to Yankee Stadium. Bronx & Central Park Zoos are good for kids, and maybe something like top of the Empire State Building or Top of the Rock. That's all I got wrt kids...

I'm assuming pretax.

You'll be fine.

Actually more than fine.

Do not live with your parents. That commute sucks and you will love the experience.

I live in Manhattan FWIW and make right around what u do and am more than comfortable.

yea my first year i lived w my best friends from college who made like 50, 35 and 70 respectively and we rented a 3br/con4 in murray hill (WHAT UP BROS) for like 45 or 4600/month that was pretty decent. it's def doable u just gotta live w a couple ppl and i think ur first few years ur def best served by being in manhattan (particularly if u are working in manhattan). that commute doesnt sound bad but ur not going to want to do it to go out and what not. it's going to be much nicer to be able to go to happy hour w coworkers, or go out and not worry about a long train ride home at the end.

I have had both and it's basically the same, I think it might even be the same owners. I am a big fan of the chicken at both places and thought Mono Mono was very cool, went in a party of like 11 for my bday, was like $45/person for lots of wings/apps and pitchers of decent beer and they have a nice beer selection.

And yeah, For 65K live in Manhattan and get a roommate or two. Commuting sucks. You obv won't be a baller but you'll be fine.

I was on the Mono+Mono website last week and the listed the Mad for Chicken location as one of theirs as well. Was removed a couple days later, but pretty sure they are owned by the same people. Went to Mono last week and was just as good as Mad for Chicken in a much cooler space.

I will be making a trip down with my girl in March, we will be staying at Helmsley Hotel on 212 E 42nd Street.

What are some good attractions near there, looking for daytime activities, and a nice restaurant near there for under $50 a person for a nice dinner.

Ideally for dinner I would like a nice Kobe Beef Steak or Burger, I have never had one and would like to try them, if it costs more than the $50 a person, thats not a big problem.
