Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

you signed up to be a fighter. people try to punch and kick you in the face/head. sometimes they succeed. pretty sure getting KO'd is quite literally as much just "part of the game" as anything else possibly could be.

i mean i know most fighters are stupid AF, so maybe they really do go into it thinking they'll never get caught, and are subsequently devastated when they get a reality check. whatever, i doubt the grief causes them to throw themselves out into oncoming traffic 5 years later tho

For the record there's like a 90% chance it was CTE/depression or he was on drugs

+rep_lol, it's not about KO, it's about THAT KO. Everyone who ever meets him in his life who is casual MMA fan knows him because of that KO.

Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

I remember thinking Terry etim was good leading up to that fight. He beat Matt grice, Justin Buchholz... This conversation is stupid because no-one knows how much mental illness he had before the ko or after. No one knows what the **** he has been up to for three plus years. People go crazy and try to self harm that have never been KOed.
Having written that, it is huge and crushing to have you career detailed like that and your head ****ed up. Dude retired two fights later.

party girl got it right on the first post, you guys didn't need to fight!

terry has some kind of mental illness. hopefully he will get the treatment or meds that he is lacking! sort of irrelevant whether it was caused by blow(s) to the head. def possible!

how about bisping getting rekt by hendo, who then made a clothing company with a shadow gif of said rekkage as it's ****ing logo, and then coming back to win the MW belt?

Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

but really i'm not even dogging on terry at all, never have been. in fact i explicitly said that there really should be no shame in what barboza did to him, and i'm not saying there's no emotional effect from getting brutally KO'd. but like if getting KO'd is such a shock and devastation then maybe you didn't really have the right perspective about all this stuff when you signed up to be a fighter, no?

my money is still on drugs or devastating brain injury over loldepression

idk how many people react like this irl when they meet terry, but as quite literally a casual fan, i definitely wouldn't be all "omg dude, youre that guy who got his life ended by edson barboza!!", thats some dickhead type ****

Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

This conversation is stupid. We don't even know what happened. A couple of media reports, probably all from the same source(s), say he deliberately smashed into buses. That could be true, highly misleading or total bollocks. We should know know more in a few days. Until then why not watch this FOTY from last night?

Combatants:

Polish heavyweight Izu Ugonoh in his first Stateside fight boasts a 17-0 (14) record v. weak opposition, he steps up

v.

American heavyweight Dominic Breazeale whose has a 17(15)-1 record v. mostly poor opposition. His best opponents before last night were Amir Mansour who almost KOed Breazeale before getting stopped in six rounds & Anthony Joshua who stopped Breazeale in 7 rounds. Breazeale lost in the round of 16 in the 2012 Olympic Super Heavyweight boxing competition, an event Anthony Joshua won.

Great fight!

Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

Ugh, I meant to type something like 'FOTY Contender'. Very good fight, not FOTY.

The "takedown" should have been called a KD & it irks me that invariably the refs don't call it. I'd even consider calling it a KD & taking a point.

You seem to have a low opinion of my abilities and a higher of your own, so I'd like to challenge you to a contest. It can be a fight in any martial art/combat sport, or any other test of combined physical toughness/mental strength, such as marine training (I guess you already know what this entails so no reason to spell it out). Something like torture via exercise would be acceptable as well.

Breath holding underwater would be a great option because it's close to 100% mental

I will lay you odds, depending on the activity. If you want to do breath holding I will give you 20-1

Jeff

I assume you are a non-athletic type so we can go the mental route. I'm very open to suggestions. I'll add to the stakes: I will retire from this forum if you can beat me in any test of mental toughness. You'll be a hero here!

Hey I thought you had the heart of the champion and I was mentally weak! You can't hold your breath for a few minutes? Research it, you can learn to do it for 5+ minutes in a few hours, which will take you to my level. Then we can see who breaks first

Haha. It's actually only around 9 minutes without oxygen assisted. Pretty insane though!

There's a curve where 5 minutes is easy and anyone can learn it, and from there on out it's a matter of mental toughness and what you can physically take

how does a non-athletic person get so good at skateboarding that he can do tricks down handrails? lol

re: bolded, pretty sure i never said that, about me or you. i may have said or implied that anybody who pursues a career in fighting and can't handle getting KO'd without sinking into deep, consuming depression for years on end maybe didn't have the right perspective in the first place, clearly doesn't possess bushido spirit, and should be doing something else with his/her life. idk if that describes you and quite honestly i dont care either. i've also seen no evidence that this was the case with terry etim and the cause for his recent freakout either.

Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

I agree with everything you just said.

However that also describes many, many fighters, if not most. Everyone rational knows they can get KO'd. That doesn't change anything. You're not flying your friends and family out to watch your brain turned to mush. You're going in there with the mentality that you cannot let that happen, no matter what. That you're a bad mother****er who is ready for anything. That nothing will break you. You won't make a mistake and they won't get you. You're going to do it, you're going to win. Everything depends on it. This is the crucial moment of your career. Everyone is watching.

Then it happens anyway. In the worst way possible.

The Etim KO was special. The name Terry Etim, draws up that KO. It's different.

None of us obviously have any idea why he did what he did, but if you don't think that KO played into his depression, physiologically and psychologically, you're smoking something better than I am.

Keep in mind that a lot of these guys believe in things like God and destiny.

Well, it doesn't take much athleticism to fall and hit your head attempting them.

So Ronda shouldn't have fought according to you. She'd be a lot more poor but maybe you're right.

right, she shouldn't have fought and then maybe women's mma wouldn't have become a thing and i wouldn't have to suffer through that garbage on otherwise good cards all the time

also, given that it's honda, her fall from grace has been/is going to be extremely devastating so i'm not sure the psychological distress she is undoubtedly going through (lol candy bars) is really guaranteed to be worth the money in the end.

Kimbo did have that odd attitude toward Mitrione. Legit thought it was ****ed up that he beat on him in front of his family.

THAT'S HOW THIS WORKS KIMBO
