reem vs werdum would be hilarious now that the reem is so cautious. could be below 5 strikes per round.
03-30-2017 , 06:35 AM
Werdum is damned aggressive (reckless) with his striking these days, though, whereas before he was basically hoping for a BJJ match.

Overeem's gonna counter the **** outta that, IMO.

i don't see how overreem improved lately but i can't even remember his last fight so.

He used to stand and trade with his glass chin and got KOd by Bigfoot, Browne and Rothwell.

Now he's cornered by.... winklejohn? It's one of the top guys. He's much more cautious now. Picks his spots better and doesn't eat to land as much. Looked much more technical against Dos Santos, Arlovski and Hunt. He even wobbled Miocic.

I think those KOs (i.e. USADA) humbled him and changed his approach. He was unbelievably cocky in his interviews leading up to the BigFoot fight. I remember being v satisfied.

I think he lost his chin a little after going off the horse meat and being horribly KOed a couple of times. Now that he's had plenty of time he seems to have his chin back a bit and doesn't just crumble to any punch to the head.
04-01-2017 , 01:52 PM
He was chinned before he ever really got on the good horsemeat tho.

He was KO'd by something called a Bobby Hoffman, Liddell famously, and Shogun twice.
04-01-2017 , 02:19 PM
He took some shots from Hunt. He's also working with Wim Hof and going down the rabbit hole in his training, I suspect chin is actually something you can improve over time with neck muscles and maybe other methods. I've heard a couple MMA trainers talking about neck training recently.

Overeem going exactly one fight without getting KOed is evidence that at the age of 36 his chin is improving?

Overeem didn't make and chin gains, he just started caring about striking defense.

Thought that randomly just came to me:

Is Stipe vs Overeem the best UFC HW title fight OAT?

I can't think of a higher quality back and forth scrap. I'm talking entertaining rewatchability, same way that Lawler/Rory is prbly the best WW title fight OAT.
04-01-2017 , 06:10 PM
One of the first two Sylvia-Arlovski fights was more exciting imo. And there's got to be a really good UFC HW title fight that went a few rounds? Or no? It may be the best UFC HW title bout but I wouldn't describe Stipe-Reem as a great fight.

Edit: Lesnar-Carwin
04-01-2017 , 06:18 PM
Lesnar Carwin wasn't a great fight.

Def not rewatchable. Carwin just pounded on a defensive Brock until he gassed and then Brock arm-triangled him, horrible fight when you remove the initial drama.
04-01-2017 , 06:19 PM
And when your critique is the length, it nearly went the whole round.

Hagler/Hearns is unanimously considered one of the most exciting boxing fight OAT, and it was over very quick by boxing standards (8 minutes).

Hagler-Hearns is overrated. #confessyourunpopularopinion

I think the hype behind that fight is what makes it stick out in people's heads, it was two gorillas who were just crushing everybody at the time. It was pretty exciting to watch when it was happening, because the outcome could just turn at the drop of a hat, but prob in retrospect (and knowing the result) its not that great.

title fight, sure, maybe. there aren't a lot of epic back and forth heavyweight fights. people get knocked out too quick. there's hendo/fedor, hunt/bigfoot, i can't think of any others.

there was that one where the fat guy came back in the 3rd round to KO todd duffee after getting battered for 13 minutes.

mike russow

russow was one of my fav UFC fighters ever...looked like a mess, went on a nice win streak, and then the UFC had no choice but to feed him to a big guy and werdum chewed him up. i think he retired soon after that.

When it comes to just HW fights, Pat Barry was in a few. His fight with Kongo and Struve come immediately to mind, they weren't high quality but they were awesome.

Kongo vs Cain was a good fight also, but I haven't ever rewatched it. Stipe/JDS was a great fight in that JDS came back like Edgar after an initial beating. Randy and Nog had a great old timer's HW scrap, as did Nog and Mir. Randy was also prbly Brock's most entertaining fight save his beatdown of Herring and initial blitz with Mir.

That's just off the top of my head.

Arlovski/Browne is a GOAT heavyweight fight contender.

I don't pretend to be able to keep up with y'all in terms of bouts I can even recall, but the Randleman vs fedor fights was amazing to me when I was a noob. I should rewatch it.
04-02-2017 , 10:34 AM
Cain/JDS had a couple good title fights as well.
04-02-2017 , 01:24 PM
I know it is a little tainted by Bigfoot testing positive afterwards but Mark Hunt V Bigfoot Silva was awesome.

Couture/Ricco Rodriguez, anybody?
