Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

CTE aside, I can't help but think this was highly likely to be due to the psychological distress of his KO. Being the recipient of the worst, most humiliating defeat possible in the thing you've dedicated your life to, and having your family friends everyone you know and everyone in your sport see it, is something that none of us could possibly understand. I can't even being to imagine. Not many fighters talk about the devastating psychological effects of a KO. Let alone a KO on TV. Let alone the worst KO ever in the biggest promotion in the world in front of millions of people. That KO was disgusting. It must be an awful, demeaning feeling to live with that. The guys who take these televised KO and come back and stay strong and keep fighting well are really, really strong people.

Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

Thats a good point ActionJeff and I think about it sometimes.

Every time they talk about Urijiah Hall's spinning kick KO against Adam Cella (sp?) I can't help but think, damn that dude got knocked out so bad he was insta-retired and became a borderline household name because of it.

It would be awful for one of your biggest failures to be so public and humiliating. Of course some people can handle it, but it seems like others can not.

Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

that guy adam cella said on the first episode of the show that what separated him from other fighters was that he didn't HAVE to fight, he had some cushy family business to fall back on if he didnt win TUF. i remember thinking at the time that he sounded smug as **** and i did smile a bit when he got rekt, but he was already planning on quitting (barring a win) before he got ktfo. iirc, he came back to fairly quickly and was shaking urijah's hand and smiling before they sent him off to the hospital to get checked out

Anyone who had to stand many hours a day for a few days in a row know the burning feeling under your feets i can imagine how horrible it must be if permanent

This is pretty ignorant ****

You realize there can be permanent cognitive effects from taking shots like that? Meaning you are stupider. Or less "you". Or less of a person. Less than you could be. Live with that.

You absolutely can't imagine the psychological effects of taking a KO in front of millions of people and neither can I. Have you even been KO'd? Experienced the confusion, physical and emotional pain, the memory problems, not knowing if you will recover or even KNOW if you've recovered? Imagine getting KO'd like that in front of your friends, mother, girlfriend, say someone just messes with you and you lose and they have to watch you get your face crushed by someones heel. Imagine what it would FEEL like to see someone you love take brain trauma in front of you. Now imagine that millions of people were also watching. Enjoying it. Cheering. Now imagine that was the biggest moment, the biggest test of your life. That it was the most important thing in the entire world when it happened. And your loss will be played, that moment, forever. Your sport will never forget it. The worst KO ever. Enjoy

lol i ****ing guess, getting knocked out is quite literally part of the game and if getting caught by some beast's incredible technique is something that breaks you as a person, then maybe you just aren't built for the ****ing fight game brah

sitting here talking like it's mandatory that he feels humiliated and shamed over it, is just like lol. i guess you would, right?

i mean like wow this is some long-pent up "psychological stress" about that KO. what's it been, 4 years? probably more likely by orders of magnitude that he was losing his mind and running out in front of oncoming traffic because of a massive brain injury due to that KO, not a hurt ****ing ego about it. lol

Re: MMA/Fightin' Thread - Now with actual good fights!!

rep,

That wheel kick KO is a hall of famer, and he was on the wrong end of it. It's brought up all the time whenever a head-kick is mentioned in an MMA conversation. The way fighters talk about how crushing it is to simply lose, I can't imagine what it's like to famously lose. I generally agree, most fighters will get over it regardless, but there's always the Ronda type reactions.

KO's aren't necessarily the prime force behind it. Apparently, you can even get CTE from a low speed fender bender. Brain is funky, homie. This episode of the JRE had some interesting info on the topic:

i mean come on tho, AJ is literally saying that terry most likely freaked out because of 'psychological distress' aka a hurt ego related to the wheel kick KO that happened almost 5 years ago. like yea i guess that's a more likely cause than having taken drugs or suffering from a massive brain injury. lol

You know NOTHING of fighting and the pain and trials of being a fighter. Nothing. You're not a fighter. And you never will be. So don't pretend to know something you can't possibly understand

If your name was permanently attached to a clip of you being given brain damage it would effect you. It would effect anyone. GFY for acting like that's a weakness. It's being human. Defeat hurts. Terrible defeats hurt worse. Fighters aren't mindless, emotionless machines. Plenty of people are fighters because of the pains of losses. As they say in all the fight gyms I've gone to, everyone is here for a reason.

Plenty of regular people, non-fighters, also get KO'd once in their life and walk around with a chip on their shoulder until the day they die.

Part of the "game"... its LIFE for these people. LIFE. EVERYTHING

Your ignorance and insensitivity disgusts me.

The reason Etim did what he did, whatever it may be, does not effect the reality of a terrible KO loss on television- which is that it is one of the worst possible things that could happen to someone. Until Terry Etim jumped in front of that bus it's entirely possible that it was the worst thing that ever happened to him in his life. It would be for a lot of people.

Psychological distress directly results from taking a traumatic brain injury you ****ing idiot. Not wanting to see yourself laid out on the floor in front of millions of people, your friends and family and loved ones, doesn't require a big ego. It requires being a human being

lol so now i'm insensitive? sorry i dont subscribe to the theory that terry freaked out and threw himself into a bus because he has a sad about a knockout that occurred 5 years ago, and i think it's more likely he was either on drugs or suffering the effects of TBI/CTE/whatever you want to call it, potentially FROM said knockout.

you make literally no sense, try thinking more and frothing less

Some of the possible signs and symptoms of CTE may include:

Difficulty thinking (cognitive impairment)
Impulsive behavior.
Depression or apathy.
Short-term memory loss.
Difficulty planning and carrying out tasks (executive function)
Emotional instability.
Substance abuse.
Suicidal thoughts or behavior.
Also you don't need to get KO'd a bunch to get CTE. Just getting punched in the head a lot could do it. Also that KO was super brutal, went completely stiff.

They think a lot of the crazy stuff football players have been doing is CTE related.

since this is the second time in as many weeks that AJ has been triggered into writing walls of text over something relatively insignificant, i vote that we disallow him from sporting the chael sonnen avatar any longer

I'm better at both thinking and fighting than you will ever be at anything. You know nothing about fighters or the mind of a fighter. Nothing.

Psychological distress results from head trauma. Moron.

I don't really care why Etim jumped in front of that bus. Theories are theories. What I care about is your attitude that taking a loss like that is "part of the game", and your shot that I couldn't handle it but other people could. If you got KO'd you wouldn't be able to visualize what your mother's face looked like while you cried yourself to sleep. You watch fights and speculate. You know NOTHING about fighting or head trauma. Nothing about the psychology of a fighter. NOTHING.

When I hear the name Terry Etim, just like everyone in this thread, just like every fan in the MMA world, I imagine that wheel kick bruising his brain. And he KNOWS that people see that when they look at him. If you don't think that KO played into his depression you're as stupid as you are ignorant

i've been KO'd from hitting my head on concrete throwing myself down handrails on skateboards, and i sure as **** didn't cry about it or throw myself into oncoming traffic from any associated embarassment. pretty sure i know enough about it to know that if you're a pro fighter and you're so weak that a KO devastates your whole mindframe, you prob didnt have enough of that bushido spirit to begin with, nahmean?
