How old is your mattress?

It's a few years old--maybe 3 or so? No real complaints about it. I ordered a cheapish (~$100) memory foam mattress topper from ebay, will report here if it's any good or not.

I'm picking up an Ikea Aspelund frame this weekend and plan on ordering sheets and a comforter from Overstock.com (thanks to this thread.)

In the Chicago area (Schaumburg and Bolingbrook) Ikea is refunding sales tax for Saturday and Sunday, which is about a 10% "discount." Here's the coupon.

So last week I went to Macy's and was able to get everything hotel collection for super cheap. Ended up costing like ~1k for an entire bed setup from pillows to bed skirt. Everything was 20% off then buy one get one half off. Then I got another 35% off for signing up and using a macys CC. Ohh and I bought 1k worth of gift cards off ebay for 800 and used them towards my purchase.

These sheets http://www1.macys.com/catalog/produc...95&AdID=500505

Then this bedding set

This comforter

These pillows
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/produc...tegoryID=28917

All of them are awesome so far

JUST want to throw this out there...If you have the money and space get a king. If I had just TWO options, an above average King or a top of the line quality queen I would go King. Just the amount of space to sprawl out(especially if you share your bed wife, gf, whatever) makes it that much more comfortable.

I've had the Tempur-Pedic Rhapsody cal king for a little over a year and I love it. I have lower back problems and I do feel like the bed has helped with some of the strain on my back. I tried out a lot of beds and I felt like this was the best one especially with the 90 day trial, you cant go wrong.

and this down comforter:

and I give them all A+++++, would sleep in again. I've been having the best sleep of my life the past few weeks.

I recently ordered this bed frame, but I still have to assemble it:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S59849802

I highly recommend all of these.

I have that same Ikea bedframe and I just bought a new Serta Sleepmaster Classic Queen that is probably twice as thick as my old mattress and has individually wrapped coils and all that. I just went to a Mancini's sleepworld and laid down on every bed until i found one that I didnt want to get up from. This was it so I bought it. I actually HAD to buy it after I got that Ikea bedframe in a Queen thinking I had a queen mattress when I actually had a double.

I sold my old mattress on craigslist and listed it for 75 and the guy who came asked me "is just 100 ok?"(wtf lol).

I am still looking for new sheets. I really dont like the sateen/silk sheets as they seem less airy and breezy, which I like in a warm climate. I have been big on egyptian cotton, but I might give bamboo a shot.

Here are the towels: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw...towels&x=0&y=0 . They're 70% bamboo I think. You can get 100% bamboo that are machine washable and probably softer, but they tend to only come in earthy colors that make me feel like an old woman, so I got these.

Edit: I'll report back when I actually get sheets. But given how successful the towels were, and how soft the bamboo sheets I felt in store were, I think I can safely recommend bamboo sheets.
I also bought some of those towels and would recommend them, much nicer than what I paid $20 for at Bed Bath and Beyond. Any update on the sheets?

I ended up buying these sheets: http://www.beddingsuperstore.com/i?s...FR1226614091WP .

They're awesome. They feel like silk. The only negative is they stay colder than cotton sheets. Not too big of a deal, though.

I just purchased a new full size bed/mattress and am thinking of getting a foam topper for it. The mattress is a open coil spring orthopaedic, not very expensive but seems a decent quality.

Are the foam toppers designed for older beat up mattress' or would they be just as beneficial with a new mattress?

Any specific recommendations? How much of a differance is their between say a 4inch topper with 4 pound density and one with 3 pound density?

I'm in the UK btw so wont be able to order from every site, have been looking at overstockers where I'll be ordering sheets from anyway so it would be a plus if they stocked it.

I ordered a memory foam topper via ebay, so that might be a good way to go. You can screen for sellers who can ship to the UK.

quoting myself because i just figured out the problem. sealy made their cashmere cover so that it is smooth in one direction (the cashmere fibers are all oriented in one way). so, rub your hand one way, smooth. rub it the other way, and it's rough. so i unzipped that **** and just put a normal mattress cover on it. now it's perfect.

I just shipped the new tempur-pedic allure bed, its ridiculoussssssssssssssssssss. Its kind of like a combination of the rhapsody and the celebrity, rhap=very soft, celeb=vfirm, allure is somewhere in between. Best sleep ever, easily worth 5k or w/e it was.

Only weird thing is that it like dehydrates you. oh wells

This thread has inspired me to get some new sheets/bedding.

A few questions:

- Thoughts on egyptian cotton vs. pima cotton vs. bamboo sheets? It sounds like the supapima cotton is almost identical to egyptian, but a little cheaper because it's grown in the US. Bamboo sounds like a decent option as well.

- Any preference on brand name? I don't have time to go feel them all. Target has sheets as cheap as $50, while other places can reach $200.

Here are a few options I'm looking at: (queen sizes)

(1) Costco - Kirkland 600tc supima sheets - $75
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...S&Sp=C&topnav=

This might be a good deal

(2) Bed Bath & Beyond - 230tc Bamboo Sheets, 100% bamboo
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/prod...m=1&SKU=111451

(3) Target - Bamboo Sheet Set - 250tc, 40% bamboo, 60% cotton - $50
http://www.target.com/Bamboo-Sheet-S...e=1&rh=&page=1

These seem like they might be on the cheaper side since they are mostly cotton, and user reviews show some pilling.

Any other good ones I should look at that are < $100?

Things I prefer:
- sheets should remain very 'cool' in the summer. however, silky sheets might be a bit overboard
- definitely don't want the flannel type feel

I think I've made my dorm bed as comfortable as possible but maybe someone can help me...

Basically everything has to be Twin XL, which is a total pain in the ass. I have 500 thread count sheets, a tempur pedic pillow, and a featherbed that I got at bed bath and beyond. Have a nice comforter but that isn't the part I care about. any other suggestions? Will only be sleeping on this stupid thing for another semester but still would be open to another improvement

Macy's Hotel Collection for sheets are amazing. I have a set of 800tc and 500tc they are both amazing, but you can notice the difference. I would go for those

i spent probably 2 months trying out sheets here in nyc - we have a lot of stores what can i say

the absolute softest i found - and believe me i tried them all - where the Sferra Manor sheets. it cost about $700 for a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. but hey it's not everyday i buy bedding. linky: http://www.sferralinens.com/product/...rra-manor.html

some other italian bedding companies i recommend:

signoria di feernze
frette
and matouk

all have amazing bedding (well the higher end lines of these companies at least)

a duvet from one of these places will run about another $700 or so.

once you go italian, you'll never step foot again in a BB&B/Macys store. if you're in NYC, Gracious Home and ABC Carpet carry alot of italian bedding.

Shifman Reviens "Lyons" - bed with a 2" memory foam topper. Very happy.

Going from "meh" sheets to really good sheets is similar to going from "meh" liquor to premium stuff; you spend more, but will feel so much better in the morning.

cross posted from another forum i post at. looking for mattress advice.

so i hate my mattress and i hate waking up with lower back pain and having sore muscles the entire day. i have a full size now and it seems fairly firm to me (i'm not sure how you define a firm mattress, as i haven't spent enough time trying out other mattresses). this mattress was bought for me ~4-5 years ago, and since i've had it a "normal" nights sleep consists of me waking up 5+ times a night to switch positions.

i can't sleep on my sides because shoulders pain starts after ~3 minutes (this could be normal for all men though). the only way i can be comfortable for long periods of time on my current mattress is if i lay on my back with my hands at my sides and my palms face up.

i was looking at tempurpedics but i'm not sure i should should spend that much right now. i have a girlfriend but she only spends the night once every 2 weeks or so. would a queen be a big enough upgrade (from a full)?

there are knockoffs on sites like overstock for way cheaper (500 as opposed to 1500) which got really good reviews (4.5 stars over 200 reviews), but i'm not sure i want to go that route and be worried about having to spend more in the long run on knockoffs than i would have if i had gone with a name brand like tempurpedic. if people have experience with knockoff brands i'd definitely like to hear reviews. i know it's going to be expensive either way and i'm kinda willing to spend ~1000 and maybe more if i wait to buy later, but if i can save a few bux that'd be swell. i was hoping someone has done this before or maybe knew a mattress secret that i don't.

Buy a matress topper and see if that makes a differance.

This, I have the 500s and they're really soft. Recently got a tempur pedic rhapsody after reading this thread. It's pretty sweet.

Question to those with tempurpedic beds: What do you do for mattress covers? I tried putting a regular cover on it, but it seemed to lessen the effect of the mattress (ie rather than laying directly on the foam, I'm now laying on the mattress protector, and not 'sinking' in as much - if that makes sense).

why are you using a mattress cover with your tempurpedic bed?

I was under the impression that you needs a mattress cover / protector to protect the mattress from body sweat + other bodily fluids seeping through the sheets and ruining the mattress. Is that not the case with tempurpedic beds (or beds in general)? (this is the first bed I've ever bought, and up until a couple of weeks ago I lived at home and had no idea about beds or mattress covers or anything along these lines, so forgive my ignorance).

I'm not a bed specialist or anything, but I don't think that they're necessary. You pay all that money for the feel of the mattress, why put some cheap thing between you and it that dulls the feel of the mattress? (Condom sex vs No Condom Sex?)
