About 9 months ago, I got a Heavenly Bed (mentioned above) and it has dramatically improved the quality of my sleep. I haven't spent more than a night or two at a time sleeping on a tempurpedic, so I can't give a detailed comparison. I do love the bed we have now, and wouldn't trade it.

I've stayed at Westin Vacation Ownership resorts all over the place and specifically remember their beds being amazing. The Heavenly Bed and a Tempurpedic bed (don't know which kind) are the two best things I've ever slept on.

t,

i've got to echo the "best bets are to lay on/ sit on/ sleep on it" sentiments.

i've also got to echo your own idea of just buying the wynn setup. i loved the sheets and the mattress. i don't remember loving the bed/headboard all that much (eh, maybe just not to my taste). but i definitely slept amazing. as you probably already know, the wynn sells everything there so it's not like they'd be doing anything crazy for you. (i bought one of the warhol daisy prints after i last stayed there, but from art.com)

while i don't know what kind of bed it is they have at the wynn, basically everyone who recommends mattresses i've heard from always says either tempurpedic or pillowtop something-or-the-other.

i currently have a full bed but honestly while i like the width, i'm not a big fan of the length, and would probably prefer longer. full/double beds are 75" long, while queen beds and kings are 80. cal kings are 84, and are actually less wide than standard kings (still a full foot wider than a queen, apparently though). whenever i've slept on a king or cal king it's felt kind of awkward with a girl, like we're not even sleeping in the same bed. but possibly as an every day bed actually being able to sleep well and comfortably is more important than feeling "close" to the other person(?).

not to derail anything, but i've got to say the thing i'm most looking forward to putting in my next bedroom is some kind of full blackout curtain. this is also one of the things i like the most about vegas. absolutely no light pass through means that if you don't want the dawn to wake you, it just won't.

i'm surprised no one has given any opinions on platform vs boxspring, or on styles of beds they like in general (probably going to have a lot to do with your taste and other furnishings.

oh, whomever shouted out the MGM pillows is totally right btw. just really nice pillows.

I have ran a mattress retail store for a little over a year and there are really only two answers. Either get a Tempurpedic or a Simmons Beautyrest World Class. The Beautyrest is basically the heavenly bed every one loves but slightly higher quality and a much lower price when purchased from a retailer. I've sold hundreds of both and have had very few complaints from either.

There is room to negotiate on most mattresses, but Tempurpedic is contract pricing so you can only go so low. With Tempurpedic just make sure they give you free delivery and at least two pillows.

Feel free to pm me if anyone has any questions they would like answered.

i have a king tempurpedic celebrity with 6 temperpedic pillows -- 3 classic and 3 of the other ones. it's the nuts of course. going to a mattress store and lying on a bunch of em is a good idea as they are pretty different (the temperpedics)

Last night's Penn & Teller - Bull**** was about sleeping, and mattresses also. Sadly, the show was a big fail (usually it's very solid).

Is it easy to clean tempur pedics? I'm afraid of sweating through the sheets and having the foam absorb it like a sponge.

choose one:

1) get an air conditioner
2) see a doctor
3) lose some weight
4) rubber sheets

you really shouldnt' be sweating through your sheets. that is gross.

if "sweating through the sheets" was code for "spraying personal lubricant and bodily fluids all over during the sexytime," you should probably consider #4.

also, when going for one of these pricey mattresses, id go with a mattress cover with a warrenty (mine is 10years i think). water actually beads off the cover, so its good for making sure nothing stains the mattress itself. was under $200, maybe much less, i cant quite remember.

I slept on a Tempurpedic for a year or two and hated it. It was comfortable I guess, but SO DAMN HOT!!! Milk was a bad choice obv. I tend to sweat when I sleep sometimes and the Tempurpedic only exacerbated the issue.

I’ve now hat a Simmons Beauty Rest for 6 years or so and love it as does everyone who’s ever laid on it. It’s amazing, but I’m not sure it’s of the highest quality as far as durability goes – it’s starting to droop in the center the slightest bit (however some people think that comes from too much secksytime and some would say simply the weight of two people sleeping close to each other will do it – IDK).

On the sheet front, I have a Calvin Klein bed set and love it. Super comfortable even though it’s only like 700 thread count. I have a 1000 thread count sheet set as well, but as one poster said above, thread count isn’t everything.

Oh – regarding pricing – MATRESS SHOPS RAPE YOU!!! My bed was shown at $2400. I went to a discount outlet thing across the street and they had it for $1200. I went back across the street and they were like – ‘No sweat - $1100 it is and we’ll throw in my daughter” – and this was at the SleepTrain – a large, somewhat reputable chain. Make sure you shop around and then own em.

I sell mattresses for a living. I just got a Serta Vera Wang Serene Nature King set, which is a latex bed. It does the same thing as a visco elastic foam bed, which is what the Tempurpedic consists of.

The advantage of the latex over visco foam is that visco is temperature sensitive, meaning if you keep your home very cool it'll take a while to conform to your body and will take a while to re-form.

Go to a store and try all the different types to see what feels best for your body. It really is a personal choice on what feels best for you, Taylor. I can have 10 different opinions from people on the exact same bed in my store.

And on negotiating in the store. If you don't you'll get hosed. Every store has a sale. Every. Single. Day. And you should negotiate further from the sale price.

It may be hard to compare beds from the same manufacturer in different stores since everyone wants exclusivity. If you decide on a few Sertas hit me on PM with the name of the mattress and the SKU number. I'll let you know what the cost of them are so you can get a solid price.

I'm trying to buy a new comforter/blanket(not really sure what its called). I live in Texas and cannot sleep if I am hot, therefore, the majority of blankets make it uncomfortable for me to sleep. Anyone have any recommendations?

I went out mattress shopping this past weekend, and bought a Simmons World Class mattress. It was listed @ 2099, and I ended up getting it for 1500ish. They basically had like 8 world class beds, with 8 different feature lists(plush, ultra plush, firm, firm pillowtop, pillowtop, etc.).

I went with a middle of the road softness, with latex. I will report back in a couple of weeks on how much it helps me sleep, but it sure did feel comfortable.

Also. I didn't really like the Tempur-Pedic stuff, but Rooms to Go had a 4 Seasons Latex bed that was similar technology that I thought was very comfortable. I just didn't know anything about the brand, and couldn't find anything on my phone on short notice.

Any of you mattress guys know anything about that brand? It was only 2299, as opposed to 3K+ for the TempurPedic stuff.

A note on comparison shopping: for a lot of mattress manufacturers, they name their beds differently for different customers. By this, I mean that if you find a bed at Sleepy's with one name, the same bed may have a different name at another store. This makes it really difficult to comparison shop, since you can never tell if two beds are the same.

The last time I bought a bed; I did this: there were two Sleepy's stores within a short walk of my apartment (I live in NYC). I went to one of them, found a bed I liked, and negotiated a price. I then went to the other one, and negotiated a price there. The price at the second store was the lowest, so that's where I bought the bed.

This is true, Poseiden and it makes it hard for the customer to compare. Here's a trick to remember. Always write down the SKU number for an easier comparison. You'll find it on the tag with the mattress' name and also on the law tag on the back.

Latex is a better bet. It conforms toyour body faster, recovers faster and hasn't been chemically treated to keep the set anti-bacterial. Ask them if it's 100% natural latex or a synthetic blend, like Tallalay, or Dunlop. Stick with the Tallalay. It will last longer. And, as always, negotiate that price down!

Don't mean to hijack, but do you have any further advice on negotiation tactics when buying a bed?

Thanks.

People make negotiating way more difficult than it should be. Just make it simple.

Ask the salesman to put his best deal together. He'll either come back with sticker price, or come back with a small discount. Tell him that's more than you want to pay, and tell him a number below what you're willing to pay. The rest should work itself out.

The economy is terrible right now. Negotiating is a cinch when nobody is buying anything. Just be willing to walk out if they won't make you the deal you want. Their are TONS of mattress stores, I guarantee they want your business.

EDIT: One more thing. Don't pay for delivery, ever.

I know this thread is from yesterday, but I'm surprised that no one has mentioned having or trying out a Sleep Number bed. I know that they're on line, but don't they also sell these in specialty stores?

Most mattress stores will have their list price pretty high, like a 60-65 margin. The instant discount they give you in store will generally get the margin down to 50.

You should be able to get that margin down to around 40 or 42, but anything lower and you will pay for delivery. Most stores contract that work out to an independent service and and are charged for delivery costs.

Most stores set a minimum price point to get free delivery, usually 500 or 600.
If you think you're walking in and buying a $199 Twin set for your kid or the $299 loss leader Queen set for your spare bedroom and expect free delivery you're going to be disappointed.

vs. similar thickness tempurpedic mattresses, you'll save like 30%.

I got the tempurpedic celebrity bed. my general outlook on life is that if it's good enough for cts, it's good enough for me. no but i laid on like 15 beds and liked that the best, i got the one that can raise up and down too so hopefully that wasn't foolish, i should have asked first (i'm hoping it doesn't break easily or something).
