Re: Los Angeles: Things To Do And Places To Go

If anyone is interested a buddy of mine at work is really into trying out fancy LA places, taking pics and tweeting about it: https://twitter.com/KevinDevours

http://followgram.me/kevindevours

He doesn't do much in the way of reviews though. But could be a source to find good new places.

Anyone ever buy a suit downtown in the garment/fashion district? This place Al Weiss Men's Clothing has to be one of the best-reviewed businesses I've ever seen on yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/al-weiss-men...-los-angeles-2. Out of 46 reviews, 44 are 5-star. Thinking of checking it out.

Re: Los Angeles: Things To Do And Places To Go

Funny story from last night:

I go to the 3rd Stop (near Cedars in WeHo/BH) with a girl and we're sitting at a table. A blonde server takes our drink orders and brings us two beers.

A little later, a brunette server comes by to ask if we're ordering any food. We say no and she takes our menus away. Then the blonde comes by to ask if we're doing okay on drinks. The pint glasses are still half full so we say no. Then when the beers are almost empty, the brunette comes by. We ask her for another round.

5-10 minutes go by and the brunette is just meandering around. The next round never came. Blonde comes by and asks if we're doing okay. We tell her we ordered another round but it never showed up. She brings us the beers quickly.

We're ready to go after that round and I ask the blonde for the check. She brings it. $24 for four beers; I leave $30 in the billfold and we get up and leave. We're at valet and now the brunette comes running out of the bar towards me. She's holding a white receipt/check. She goes "Are you leaving?!" I say yes. She says "You have to pay your bill!"

Moral of the story? If you go to the 3rd Stop, order from the blonde.

Seems to me if you are going to enjoy the luxury of having two different waitresses take care of you, with two different hair colors, you should pay for it.

Re: Los Angeles: Things To Do And Places To Go

I was thinking about trying Urasawa during an LA trip later this month because of some hard-to-believe reviews I've heard about the place. Has anyone here eaten there recently? Is it worth it?

If it's not all that... what's really the best sushi joint in LA?

I ate there in March and it was amazing. I haven't eaten at the other critically-acclaimed sushi restaurants (like Masa) anywhere else so I don't really have any other datapoints but Urasawa was the best meal I've had to date.

a friend of mine posted some pictures with what we had. I'm c/pasting the descriptions in lieu of pictures

initial courses:
-light dish of hairy crab marinated in a light miso and rice wine mixture
-ankimo wrapped in seared toro, with grated daikon on top
-vegetables
-handcarved iceblocks with fresh sashimi (shima aji, toro, uni)
-diced fresh scallops and caviar, with a marinated ****ake mushroom providing some earthy sweetness to counteract the caviar
-Shirako tempura
-crab meat with a crab brain sauce, served with uni and green onion. over charcoal pot

shabu shabu:
-Sweet spot prawn and a veritable slab of foie gras

sushi:
-toro
charred toro cheek
mackerel
red snapper
bluefin tuna
amberjack
squid
****ake sushi
mirugai/geoduck
uni
chutoro
spanish mackerel
shiro ebi
abalone
toro roll
razor clam
amaebi
anago
tamago

dessert:
grapefruit jelly with goji berries
sesame pudding with a layer of red bean paste
bite of pudding with matcha
roasted green tea

man typing this list up makes me want to go back really really badly. Hiro-san asked us if we want to make a reservation for later this year but we looked in our wallet and decided it's probably not appropriate.

It was spread out around 3 hours or so...I could've eaten a lot more for sure though he gave us some extra uni because the shop was closing up too (American-sized, as he liked to call it).

He also mentioned to us that he probably has the lowest margin in the top-end sushi restaurants in the U.S. I forgot exact figure but because of rent (on Rodeo Drive) and ingredients what he charges is a bargain ($350 with no alcohol).

This is going to sound really snobby, but...of the 10 best meals in my life, probably 8 of them have been at Urasawa. You have to go. I'm a big-time sushi snob, and I've never come across anything that compares (never been to Japan or anything though).

Re: Los Angeles: Things To Do And Places To Go

Hi guys,

I am currently looking to rent a house/townhouse/condo in LA. I was hoping somebody on here had something to rent because it can be difficult convincing people that I am not a professional degenerate.

I of course have plenty of recommendations by 2+2'rs of various age groups. Send me a PM if you can assist?

Thanks!

Was this a scam by someone pretending to work there?

This would be an awesome scam!

Although, story doesn't check out because I left the money with one bill on the table, and the brunette came out holding a different bill (re-print from the register).

sublime -- if you can spend $3k a month, my friend's neighbor just moved out of a super nice 2-BR townhouse in Mid-Wilshire.

I thought this place was like $600+ a head? I never thought I would eat there, but for $350 its safe to say I some day will.

IDK if where to take my friends for sushi. K zo is close by, or Kiyokawa. Have not eaten at either. Assume both are overrated.
