Btw I am really enjoying the crime drama Bosch on Amazon Prime. LA is basically a major character. Really well done.

I love it, totally agree. I also live ~5 blocks west of the Hollywood police station, so all those aerial/parking lot shots are my neighborhood.

Driving down to LA for first time. Staying in central LA (Beverly Grove). Recommendations for things to do and food within a few miles? I picked this area because heard it's pretty walkable.

My gf and I went to the LA Master Choral at Disney Concert Hall a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it! I must be getting old lol. The music was just so trippy and cool and trancelike. They also played the Monolith song from 2001 - which I didn't realize is mostly just a bunch of people singing in weird discordant harmony. Also I'd never been before and the building is amazing.

La Brea Tar Pits are cool. Also the Petersen Automotive Museum is amazing. And if you get a chance eat at Pizzeria Mozza. Call for reservations first. It's incredible. Best pizza I've had in LA.

Thanks for the recs. I'm enjoying the area. One lesson learned is that it's hard to walk to places in LA. The city is so spread out and 1 mile in the heat is very different than walking a mile in SF.

Also found some great little coffee shops on Melrose Ave. It feels very LA, and people watching there is quite entertaining.

Fwiw this is the worst heat we've had all year. Melrose is great, tons of cool spots.

Things have been getting a tiny bit stale with the gf lately, so I'm planning a mystery date for next weekend. Here is what I have so far for agenda.
  1. 4pm: pick her up in Hollywood, head to this art gallery opening - http://www.artslant.com/la/events/sh...summer-reverie
  2. ~6pm: head over to this nearby gallery opening: http://www.artslant.com/la/events/sh...summer-reverie
  3. 7-7:30pm: dinner somewhere hipster with lots of lighter fare to choose from. Downtown or near the galleries.
  4. 9pm: romantic stroll or view somewhere other than SM Pier or Venice, which we've done very recently.
We've never really done an art gallery opening before, and she has a degree in art history, so I'm pretty sure 1) and 2) will be a fun new experience for us. I checked out the art in both and liked it a lot. I told her to dress nice and sleek/hipster. But she needed me to narrow it down to art or music hipster? How edgy? And finally uptown or downtown art vibe? I told her way downtown. She likes to dress up so this is an important factor in the date.

Ideas greatly appreciated for #3. Something with small plates and/or lots of veggie/salad type options would be the best. I thought about Water Grill although that's not very edgy or hipster at all.

For #4 I thought about driving out to Moonshadows for the view but that's going to be packed on a Sat night. I'm also willing to entertain any other ideas for #4. That's the most malleable of my plans. We don't really drink a lot anymore so a club or a bar isn't super appealing in itself. Also places like Standard rooftop at 9pm Sat. are a nightmare anyway.

Is it possible to park up by the Griffith Park observatory and walk around at 9pm? Google is unclear. She lives right near Griffith Park so it's not quite as exciting as other places, but that still might be nice.

Okay found this that makes it sound like they're open at least until 10. http://www.los-angeles-attractions.c...servatory.html So that might be a good option for our nightcap spot.

San Antonio winery is near the second place. Although last serving is at 7 so I'd have to bump up the agenda an hour, which is fine. http://sanantoniowinery.com/restaurant/menu/ But I'm not super thrilled about the lighter options.

You're going way out there for those galleries. Still, you could walk from there to Bestia and it's less than a mile. On the other side of the Arts District, there's The Pie Hole with the best pies in town and a classic arcade bar called EightyTwo. Doesn't really seem what you're looking for but thought I'd throw it out there. If you watch New Girl or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the exterior for the New Girl apartment is right next to them and the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia bar exterior is four blocks away. The Griffith Park Observatory would be a good place for a view, but it's going to be busy on a weekend night. At least there's nothing at the Greek Theatre next weekend. Maybe Perch would be a cool place to eat downtown with a view built in, but it's in the middle of downtown. A bar downtown that will have a classier and less hectic vibe but an amazing view is the BonaVista Lounge in the Bonaventure hotel. Again on the other end of downtown compared to where those galleries are.

Ok Bestia looks great. I can actually rearrange things and do that after the first gallery and before the 2nd - which is open until 10pm. Should be easy to get a reservation for 6-6:30.

Well nevermind. Everything is booked up at Bestia until 11.

There are some other popular places around Bestia with Church & State french bistro, Little Bear gastropub, Pizzanista, and Urth Caffe is more up in the center of the arts district.

Oh, I didn't know you were willing to come out to my part of downtown. Well, then you'll be next to the Bonavista Lounge at the Westin Bonaventure if you think a classy rotating bar with spectacular views could be a good nightcap. Or perhaps you could take her to the new observation deck of the U.S. Bank Building (I think it's $25/person). Just going up the Bunker Hill steps alongside U.S. Bank is a cool experience if it's your first time. I'm not sure of its hours, but the Blue Ribbon Garden atop a portion of the Walt Disney Concert Hall is a cool little-known space with a nice view.

So im planning on moving to the LA area within the next 2 months. Already got a 15k bankroll built up and i plan on becoming a dealer at the Bike as well. So i was wondering where would be a nice area to get an apartment for a reasonable price around the LA area?
