If you stay at Little Tokyo, eat here:

Best ramen of all time. Wait is like...90 mins on weekends. 20 mins when I went there on a Weds afternoon during jury duty
If the wait is long try shin shen gumi across the street next to Starbucks.

Actually prefer it now but both are good.

Sorry for the grunch but any recs for good, not ridiculously expensive sushi in Hollywood? Or if there's another place I should go for one night in Hollywood, that would be good, too.

Thanks.

What's ridiculously expensive? Sugarfish is the best, but that's ~$30. Sushi Ike is good imo, generally pretty well regarded.

My gf took me to Providence last night for my birthday. We got the 9 course market tasting menu with wine pairing. (Obviously some things have changed.)

I'd say about half the dishes were amazing, the other half were good. A couple I wasn't nuts about. My favorite might have been an appetizer - a cracker like a fancy triscuit with salmon roe and some kind of cream sauce. The cheese/wine pairing was amazing and the duck main course was really good.

I really don't have anything to compare it to though as I never eat like that. Right now my stomach is struggling to figure out how to digest all this rich food that I'm not used to. I don't know that I'll have a big compulsion to do it again. Maybe in 6 months. My big craving right now is sushi.

The most interesting part of the night was probably the "Seeking Arrangement" couple next to us - some obviously wealthy 50-year old dude with a 25-year-old super-hot tattooed chick. You could tell they had conversed online but this was their first date. I will give her credit she was really working at being classy - being well-read, into art, wine, etc. Then just randomly she would throw out some like like "I just want to make out with you when you talk about your writing" that was just completely out of place and not delivered with much passion. Very weird and distracting.

Was in LA on business and ate at Son of a Gun. Really enjoyed it. Probably more than the last time I was there and ate at Animal, but both are top notch.

Fellow ElD LA 2+2ers,
Looking for recommendations for New Years Eve in the LA area with a new girlfriend. We are "teh olds" (40's) so we are not looking for some crazy party, but also something not completely dead that only "teh ancients" would go to. Can be one place that has everything(dinner, music, party) or can break up dinner with another venue. Prefer live music over DJ.

This is one of the best resources to find things going on in LA.
http://www.laweekly.com/
this is the event page
http://www.laweekly.com/calendar
Also just google "la weekly"
for links to all the sub sections.
This town is so huge its really hard to give recommendations, as a ton depends on what part of town your in.

$1600 for a 1bedroom in Santa Monica sounds like a steal now lol.
I'd snap move back to LA if not for the crazy cost of living increases scaring me away from doing it.

Best neighborhoods to live for a possibly relocating pro who would be playing primarily at the Commerce and the Bike? All I care about is that it not be a bad neighborhood, not too far from family in Hollywood (<30 min drive), decently walkable, and reasonably priced apartments relative to LA housing market (looking to pay $1k-$1.5k for a 1BR). Thanks for any help.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. All of those neighborhoods sound promising after learning about them itt and doing some research. Much appreciated.

$1500 doesn't go that far for a 1BR here, but it can be done for a unit in a complex without amenities. My brother lives in such a place in the middle of Hollywood for $1,400/mo. There may still be some places like that in the Arts District of downtown, which is on the rise with a lot of cool dining and entertainment options. Very walkable for things to do, but still a little sketchy for being next to skid row. Close enough to the Little Tokyo gold line into Union Station or to Union Station itself so you could take the red line into Hollywood, or perhaps a metrolink train/Amtrak to Commerce. Or not far to drive to either casino. Any place with a gym and pool downtown is going to run $2k+ and more around $3k for a luxury complex.
