Really close to pulling the trigger on an Omega Speedmaster professional moonwatch. It's a step up from anything I have now and I can't really justify it but...

In all seriousness, though, depending on how you wear the watch you could probably just go to any rando, battery changes are pretty easy and don't require any particular skill.

What you might want to use a particular person for is pressure testing. If you do any diving or you're in the water a lot, having the watch pressure tested after being opened is highly advisable. This isn't a highly complicated procedure but it does require specific equipment that the guy in the mall probably doesn't have.

For most purposes, though, just making sure the gasket is properly lubricated before the watch is closed back up should be more than sufficient. Any decent jeweler should be able to properly do this in like 4 minutes.

I don't think many watch purchases can really be justified. You just got to do what you want!

Yeah. Who ya tryna justify it to?

Myself. I bought a Hamilton khaki a few months back for work, when I'm out and about I've got my Steinhart Nav B Chrono or, to a lesser extent a Tag Aquaracer. Have a couple of other watches I no longer wear. I think if I do pull the trigger on the Speedmaster I'll have it on all the time. Still like my Steinhart and Hamilton though.

First world problems...

good choice, no justification, do it anyway. you'll start to see it in your dreams.

I have two comparisons from the past year, and I understand trying to justify the purchase to yourself. I did that. My Tudor Black Bay was nearly twice as much as I had spent on a watch before, but I justified it by saying that I knew I was going to get this watch at some point -- as a USC alum, I loved the burgundy bezel -- and that this was the best secondhand opportunity I had seen in about a year of looking on a regular basis. Then I bought an Eames Lounge Chair and justified it to myself that this price was so good -- along with clearing a large credit card bonus by adding a new card just for the purchase -- that the resale value will always be there to make it worth getting over a replica (which I had almost done). But really it came down to these being things that were must-haves in my mind. I was going to get them some day, so with the opportunity of great deals sitting in front of me, I should start enjoying them now.

I'm sure some watch will lose wrist time, but you would still wear other watches. You aren't going to wear the Seamaster all the time. For me, my Orient Blue Mako (now USA II) was my most worn watch and it still is. The Black Bay went to No. 2 in wrist time, and knocked my Stowa Marine Automatic from 2 to 4 even though I still love that watch. The Seiko SARB017 stayed at No. 3 just because of its unique green color.

You have 5 watches and are considering a 6th as possibly taking too much wrist time from the others? And the most expensive current watch you have is what, $1200 or so?

I'd love to have the self control to only have 6 watches! That'd be incredible.

I'm pretty happy that I can keep my purchases limited to ~1 watch per year.

Got this one recently, like it a whole lot better than the "new" 65:

Went to this last week.. They had a VR exhibit where you could explore a watch movement.

I'm not sure why I didn't take more pictures inside tbh. There were 6+ watchmakers you could interact with as they worked on movements. I much preferred this exhibit to the actual museum in Geneva.

The watch spotting inside was INSANE..

So the opportunity came up this weekend for me to possibly buy a new Rolex Datejust 41mm or as the Rolex dealer called it - the Datejust II. Went in the store looking at a Black Submariner Date, but came away impressed with how this one looked. The one I tried on was a steel/blue face, non-fluted bezel.

This one is the white-gold with fluted.

Thoughts??

Thanks in advance.

Haven't even gotten that far .. at this point just deciding on if this is the watch to get. When I have cash in hand I'll work on the price.

What is a fair discount for a Rolex AD?

You can look at the resell/grey market as a benchmark. My friends purchased a women steel datejust for 10k cad and a rosegold chocolate Daytona for 26k (list 36k).

Your particular piece is the 2017 Baselworld? You may have to pay list price for that.

The picture he used was the Baselworld model, but the Datejust II came out awhile ago and he described a smooth bezel model.

Personally if you're getting a smooth bezel I'm not sure why you don't get the Oyster Perpetual instead and save a couple of grand, the fluted bezel is what makes a Datejust iconic, but I also think 41mm is too big for a stick indices dress watch so YMMV.

Yeah you won't get a discount on this model without a longstanding relationship with you AD. You'll most likely pay list price.

Check out grey market and you should be able to get one at $6500 or so.
