Hey everyone. I don't really know much about watches but It seems like this is a good place to go for some advice.

A while back my girlfriend gave me a stainless steel Bulova Marine Star for my birthday. I'm not really a flashy guy so I feel like this watch suits me well as something that I wear to work or out to dinner. I also have a $100 Timex Expedition that I wear when I'm fishing, camping or otherwise doing something where my watch is at risk of getting banged up.

My girlfriend has hinted at times that she's jealous I have 2 watches that I like, one for formal and one for play. Her watch situation could use an upgrade and I have been thinking that for her birthday I might buy her 2 watches that have a similar theme, one for formal wear and another for when we're roughing it in the woods. I'm not looking to spend more than $1,000 combined for the 2 of them. Any suggestions or tips that you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Pretty standard omega speedy automatic here. I got a 1960's seamaster with a beads of rice bracelet and put it on the speedy to keep the original bracelet mint.

40-44mm case is standard. But I think people have come to the realization that watches are a gentleman's only typical flash of jewelry so the standards aren't so standard anymore.

sup bros.

Any advice on the best\cheapest place to by a g-shock mtg online? I'm in Australia if that makes a difference. Mostly trying to get a feel for whether or not they are fairly priced in brick n mortar shops in Aus. We are notoriously expensive for imported goods. Probably if it's not more than a hundred or two cheaper online it's not worth it for me in shipping, currency conversion, etc. ty. ty.

Find the model you want, copy/paste the model number into a google search and boom. In general though, I check jomashop.com & ebay.

Jesus Christ they make $1000 g-shocks?

I don't think Joma or Ashford stock G-Shocks, Amazon is probably the best bet from immediate googling, but I'd go ebay since I don't know if the retailers on American Amazon will ship overseas. Watchrecon and chrono24 if you're willing to buy used, which seems insane for a Casio.

WatchReconnnn great site. But probably not for G-Shocks although I'm sure they're there.

Jesus Christ that one isn't even analog. I guess Breitling makes some quartz in that price range, too, and obviously the Grand Seiko/Astron high end quartz market exists, but that doesn't even look expensive, it looks like every other $70 g shock

Thanks. I did that at first, but prices just seemed all over the place. Not sure whether it's due to promotions or big price differences between the different MTG models... I'll keep poking around though. That said, it's pretty common for BnM shops to have 20-30% off everything after Christmas, so I might go for a look then.

Hahah. Yeah. I'm not even a watch guy. I bought a bottom tier g-shock purely for practical purposes (gym, sports, swimming, etc), but found I liked how it looks with casual wear too, so I've been half-heartedly looking for a slightly more pimped g-shock to go with casual-to-smart-casual... then I bumped into and MRG while I was walking around an airport and it was sexy as f*ck. They didn't seem to be that common in Australia at the time, but are starting to find their way into shops now.

Help me pick a new watch!

My evolution with watches has been:

Stuff I can't remember -->
Rolex Submariner (classic, but expensive and too common imo -- sold) -->
Oris Artelier Moonphase (kind of like the face but meh -- sold) -->
G-Shock (cheap and standard) -->
Apple Watch (trying to be less distracted and this watch is the epitome of constant distractions -- stopped wearing and will sell soon) -->

What to get next?

Criteria:
-I tend to travel a fair amount, so multiple time zones is really nice to see quickly - this and the automatic knowing the time zone are probably the main things from the Apple Watch that I miss
-I sweat a lot (a general issue, unrelated to workout habits ), so band needs to take this into account
-Waterproof for at least showering, ideally also swimming
-Something I'm not worried about getting damaged/losing

This is what I've come up with, which is either cool/retro or as my friend I showed it to put it, "the anti poon": Casio AE1200WH-1A

FWIW, this is probably my favorite reasonably priced watch, considering only style:

I'm sure this may have been discussed ITT, but what's the best way to go about buying a pre-owned watch? Is there a major reason not to?

watchrecon.com, and not if you do your due diligence. I've bought two watches used online, one for more than two grand. I knew exactly who the guy was, and that he was an assistant U.S. attorney, before making the purchase. But mostly it's just looking at the person's past posts on the site, such as watchuseek.com, and seeing their reputation. You build a provenance on the watch and the person.

There are a ton of fakes out there, and more insidiously instead of fakes if it's a popular brand you can get a "frankenwatch", which is a watch made from the parts of other watches to outwardly resemble the watch you want.

watchrecon and chrono24, pay a lot of attention to the seller's rep, don't buy from India or the Philippines unless the seller is EXTREMELY reputable.

What the aboves have said. WatchRecon is basically a database of private forum watch sales. It's a great reference and source. The guys selling on there, for the most part, are just as passionate about watches and their inner-workings as we are of poker. I've gotten several watches from sourcing WatchRecon and I will going forward.

Ya really seems like a GMT on a nato would tick all of the boxes for him.

If that's too close to a sub get the Seamaster GMT, if he doesn't want an automatic maybe go with the Seiko SUN021 or one of the other Prospex kinetic GMT divers?

Rolex Explorer II (216570) would also work if he's after something that differs from a Sub but still has a GMT hand. Black dial with NATO strap would be sweet.
