Enjoy it. Steinhart makes good quality stuff for the price, I have heard very good things about that piece in particular. The movement is very common and robust.

AK-

Steinhart is very very good quality and you wont be disappointed. But as said it may take a while, so be patient. Not many brands out there give you more bang for your buck.

Enjoy it.

with a $1k budget, you have more than enough to get an automatic chronograph so I would also look at the Hamilton Jazzmaster automatic chronograph, the Victorinox Air Boss Automatic chronograph, the Christopher Ward Speedhawk, The Steinhart Nav-B Chrono if you are thinking of going that route. These are all valjoux 7750 based chronographs that sell for less than $1k.
amoeba (and Zack), thank you. That's exactly the sort of suggestions I'm looking for. Some fantastic options there to consider.

So my grandfather heard I was looking for a watch and gave me this.

He's had it forever but doesn't wear it anymore. It's a quartz seiko, band is like elasticy but with hard links. Obviously color is gold.

Without giving any of my own opinions I'd like to know what you guys think.

Re: Let's Talk Watches

its a bit dated and small for you. Also you don't want to wear thinner smaller watches that low on the wrist.

I mean a gift from your grandpa is a gift from your grandpa but I don't think it looks right.

I'd agree with the above comments and also add it looks a bit feminine

Screw that. Go here: SeiyaJapan The JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) watches are infinitely better than the ones they sell in the US.

And he's got some Citizen and Orient too.

How about this?

my honest opinion is that it looks "old" as opposed to "vintage". if i saw that watch on anyone under 40 years of age i'd ask if they got it from their grandfather (seriously).

also agreed with above, it's too small for your wrist.

Ok cool.

That's what I thought too. Def too small and kinda cheesy. I might try a brown leather strap on it to see if it even could be wearable but I doubt it.

If you do get another watch to wear instead, make sure to wear the one he gave you at least some of the times you go see your granddad, though. Important to demonstrate that you appreciate the gift.
