I wasn't being serious. I just think colorful (see Orange), stand out watches can by synonymous with d-bags. Not saying he is, just poking fun.

I wear a breitling and I despise Ed Hardy more than anything on the planet, so does that just make me a half douche?

no i think ur safe under some part of the "just bc u wear a breitling doesnt mean u wear ed hardy, but if u wear ed hardy (and can afford it) u prob want a breitling" and the subsuquent "if u wear ed hardy ur likely a douche" corollary.

What do you guys think about ordering something like a Tag Heuer or a Breitling at amazon.com?

Afaik amazon.com is no certified dealer for Breitling watches so they don't get the watches directly from Breitling. But i don't think a dealer as big as amazon sells fakes? How do they get these watches?

You'll be overpaying by not being able to haggle.

Ok, but it is still only 2/3 of the price i have to pay here in Germany.

Amazon.com only has 1 piece left for all 3 watches i consider buying. Not sure what to make out of that.

Any idea how they get the Breitling w/o being certified dealer DW?

First of all, are you sure .com will ship internationally? I thought they only ship books, DVD's and CD's? At least thats the way it was a year ago, not sure if its changed.

Secondly, does Germany not have import tax laws? I know this is always a big downside to ordering for me, because the duty on it is absurd, i was going to buy a 2k Longines before and the duty + shipping came to an extra 600 euro i think.

I think your best bet, if you're not travelling to the states soon, is to look for authorised dealers in the eurozone. There is one (coincidentally german) website i check out occasionally, http://watch.de, which has a good collection. I'm not going to vouch for the integrity of the website because i've never used them, but they do have a walk in store, so i'd assume they are reliable?

They send watches to Germany. You can't order electronics and some other stuff, but it is no problem for watches.

You have to pay taxes, 19%. Amazon.com collects the tax and does the customs clearance. But it is still only 2/3 of the price i have to pay in Germany. It is sick how expensive these watches are in Germany. Or how cheap they are in the US.

Not sure what they mean by ohn. Tour Bee are right but at the end its yon, with the on part being somewhere between an ou and an o. The n isnt pronounced.

Some other stuff they have doesnt seem accurate to me either, are the works on the right supposed to be pronounced litterally? if so a lot of them arent right.

The prices on sites like Amazon are typically much lower than any AD will offer.

Try Jomashop.com or Authenticwatches.com
Both are legit and probably ship to Europe.

Off the face value, yes, but it only looks to be about 10% in most cases, where you can get ~25% by haggling.

Do you guys do anything about small scratches on steel (brushed/polished) watch bands or cases, or just generally accept them?

Cape cod cloth for polished surfaces, green scotchbrite pad for brushed.

In general I don't do anything, unless I'm selling a piece and then I'll clean it up some.

Watchmaker, if you're out there, are there any updates on the ninja-watch? Would be really cool to see how it turned out (if it did).

Oh and btw, looking for a semi-balling watch for about 800-1k$, not looking for anything in particular so go crazy. Am only 18 though, so not anything that makes me seem arrogant or douchey.

jomashop.com sells as well sell through amazon.com. They have some of the watches i am looking for but i found that statement on their site:

Quote:
All products sold on Jomashop.com are guaranteed authentic. Since Jomashop.com does not sell its products through the manufacturer's pricing guidelines; we do not provide the manufacturer’s warranty with the product. A manufacturer’s warranty card may not be issued or may not have an authorized dealer stamp.

While our merchandise is 100% authentic in its manufacturer’s source and components, but since we are not an authorized distributor, the warranty of the watches is provided by Jomashop and not by the manufacturer.
Prices are great, but when i spend that much money on a watch i want to have full manufacturer’s warranty.

I am about to write an email to amazon.com about this but i assume it is the same.

My two favorites at the moment:

vs.

Probably the white Tag Heuer since my current watch has a black dial.

Not my cup of tea for that price. Cartoonish colors, quartz movement, $1,500 is too much imo. If you want that look you could get it for much less. If you want to spend $1500 you could get so much more.....

what other movements are there, besides quartz and what exactly are there or what are the benefits of others

being a watch newb, i just googled this question, what quartz is and how it differs from mechanical movement.

am i a fool for thinking that i have been hustled? whats the catch? what makes my TAG automatic any special to justify the huge price jump from the decent looking $200 watches in this thread? simply to not have to replace a battery?

Beware of shipping watches to Europe.
I recently shipped a couple vintage Omegas to the UK (but one was basically NOS, complete with box, papers, etc)- the poor SOB who bought them got absolutely demolished by whatever f@ggy taxes they levy on watches over there. Thankfully, he was a well-to-do sort of chap and the one of the variants he was buying was very scarce, so he could kinda-sorta justify it the added expense, but if he were Joe Schmo who saved up for his dream watch and wound up having to pay what he did just to get it clear of customs, it would've been a wee little financial catastrophe.

Various countries in Europe have a latticework of bizarre laws when it comes to receiving 'nice stuff' through the post. Research in advance and make sure your buyer knows the liability rests with them and not you.

"Balling" means different things to different people.

In the 800-1k range, you aren't going to get anything spectacular (there's some decent production grade stuff out there in this price range), but if you save up another grand and buy used, you can seriously up the quality level.
