I recently bought an orient as an every day work watch and I'm impressed. I'm a value nazi and if you are looking for an intro level watch I'd recommend nothing else.

How many watches should a guy in his 20s own? I have a movado and bulova and just wondering what people thought. I'm thinking about adding a watch with a leather band and also maybe a cheaper watch under $400 to just have a bigger variety when i go out.

Any thoughts on watches under $400. I'm a broke college grad so can't spend bank so just wondering if its even worth buying a watch under $500. I imagine its better to wait and buy a watch worth a little more since they last so long.

Serious post? Just in case it is... why would you need multiple watches if you can't afford them? I'm sure you'll get more enjoyment out of them when you don't have regrets on spending money you don't have to purchase it. Plus buying your dream watch when you get your first job will add some sentimental value to it and make it that much better.

Would have to be a heck of a first job to get me my dream watch. Must come with a nice signing bonus.

True. If I have to wear a suit, shouldn't I get a watch with a leather band?

Are you the guy that started the thread in OOT "What is the correct dollar amount for a man to spend on a watch?"

If so, keep doing the good work.

Dude you need to find another phrase to describe yourself. Using that word in any context is beyond stupid and someone needed to call you out on it.

Anyone have experience with/know something about Shinola watches? Made in Detroit, the "Runwell" series retails for $550.

I like the story and the case design is nice but 550 is a bit much for a quartz. Would consider if it was sub 400.

I was getting excited too until I saw the "quartz" mov. Sooo close.

Here's their response:
Shinola:

...Instead of utilizing cosmetic components (cases, dials, crystals and straps) that would provide for a $300-$400 starting price point, we upgraded all aspects of component quality dramatically.

Crystals are all sapphire. The watch case is engineered and made by the same case maker that makes cases for some of the finest and most popular ‘Swiss’ watches in the market today. Dials are over-printed 13, 14 times and the most sophisticated luminous paint lights up the numerals and hands in the dark. The leather for the straps come from Horween of Chicago...

...They will now have an opportunity to own a watch of ‘Swiss’ quality that’s made in America and is an incredible value. All those brands who sell $3,000 to $5000 three-hand watches with a stainless steel case and an automatic movement will now be competing with something of the same feel with the difference being that the movement is not automatic but, instead, a quartz movement with 46 to 100 Swiss parts being assembled in a very special place: Detroit. Price: $500-$1000.

I wondered if their name had anything to do with the original Shinola. It does:

In the case of Shinola, however, Kartsotis is launching a new company under a brand made famous for shoe polish. The original Shinola brand was founded in 1907, and gained notoriety during World War I, when a disgruntled young soldier was said to have shined his commander’s boots with feces. The rumor led to the popular colloquialism, “You don’t know **** from Shinola.”

After one of Bedrock’s managers made the crack to an office colleague, the joke turned to a serious discussion about restoring the long-idled Shinola brand, whose trademark, it turned out, was available.

I mean I agree with some of that. Their cases are very nice. Again though, considering there are mechanicals with very nice cases, namely from brands like Stowa coming in at the $750 range and plenty of quartz Hamiltons/Tissots coming in at the $300 range all with sapphire crystals, the pricepoint of $550 for the Shinola seems a bit high.

I still don't get it. They seem like they were going for upgraded quality and some respect in the market but are they really going to get that with a quartz watch? I don't think so but maybe I'm wrong. It's like they glass ceiling'd themselves.

They are trying to move to mechanical. It's just that it is time consuming to train their staff to put together a mechanical when their staff has never done it before.

I'm unsure exactly what I'm looking at, but that thing is hideous. I could see a Brock Lesnar type guy wearing it, but a regular guy no way.

It's like they didn't even try. The main body of the watch has nothing to do with the outside design so it comes off as a complete afterthought. There are tons of other fonts other than basic roman numerals that would match better and they could have made the date window a skull shape or something to try to tie it together. Really a very pathetic effort. Heads should roll. (added that for irony... except I'm serious)

Kinda surprised by this, maybe because it's such a big brand.

I think in the last ten pages I've seen 30 different watches by 30 different brands that looked exactly like one Rolex Submariner.

Isn't there another brand that kind of has that signature 4-8-12 numerals and nothing else? It escapes me, something Swiss and smallish.
