sigh. my point is that while it may be "gauche and tasteless to buy a watch or a painting or a crown for the purpose of letting people (general or subset) know you have a lot of money", it is very difficult in some cases to discern someone who buys certains items for those reasons from the people who buy them for the other.

let me explain since that reads poorly:

100% of people who buy a diamond studded platinum crown and wear it around during the day are trying to let people know they have lots of money.
some % less than 100% of people who buy picassos, etc, etc, pateks, etc are trying to accomplish the same thing. since there is a significant % of people who are buying things like picassos for other reasons than to show off their money, it is hard for an outside observer to label a person who buys a picasso as "someone just trying to show how much money they have," because they risk being a false positive.

this still somewhat misses my point: the diamond crown guy is going around purposely flaunting to everyone his money. the picasso guy does not necessarily signal "i have a lot of money" and doesn't signal to everyone. you buy a picasso, it impresses a certain set of people who care about such things, and doesn't necessarily go "nyeh i have a lot of money" to the general public, or even a subset. it signals a certain level of wealth to a certain subset of people, while simultaneously conveying good taste. the guy who buys the picasso could alternatively buy a bag of diamonds to display on his dining table, but then he would be conveying a lack of taste again.

like i said, i don't care to argue this point more but i think (imo) that i'm pretty clearly right. different people want to signal different things to different sets of people. a person wanting to convey to members of "the elite" that they belong to that set would want to buy a nice patek or something like that, as opposed to a diamond crusted rolex. a person wanting to just let everyone know they have a lot of money would buy the latter.

Re: Let's Talk Watches

Watchmaker (and others);

As I posted in the last thread, I bought this watch from Amazon. I paid 60-70% of what it cost at the local Authorized Distributer.

I quickly found out that it was fast. It gains 30 - 35 seconds per day.

Here are my questions.

Can I go back to Perfect Timing, the Amazon seller, and get them to adjust it?

Will the local AD [Bloomingdales] laugh at me if I ask them, since I bought it on the internet?

Is 30 sec/day the best I can get with that movement? [ETA 2836-2, 4 Hz, 25 jewel]

Perhaps I took PVN's response too literally. My thinking was that the word discreetly was incompatible with simply "showing off wealth". I now suspect that he was using the word to suggest a taste and/or status signifier. If that is how it was intended then I agree. A tourbillon can be useful.

My watch:

I don't know anything about it or why I got it, but I thought it looked pretty low-key but still showed that it was classy.

I wanna get a Breitling Windrider next, again, no reason why.. just think it's a decent line.

Thoughts?
I really like the way this watch looks. Where did you find this online? I've been googling for the past 10 mins and I haven't been able to find this specific watch (i've found comparable ones with different face/band colors).

Okay, WTF @ this page: http://watchreview.com/

At first glance, it just looks like random spam. But wait, just click on a link of a brand you like... there's a TON of good quality pictures. It's just completely useless because there's no structure to it.

What am I missing?

Re: Let's Talk Watches

I am looking for a workout watch.. something I can wear lifting, running, swimming, etc. Something with a heart rate monitor is a necessity. What is the best for this? I dont mind shelling out to get something super solid that will be reliable and last a little while. I also dont want something gigando on my wrist, but if that's the way to go, that's the way to go.

For everything else, I wear the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time. I love it, I cant imagine wearing anything else right now really.

just got a Garmin 305 for running and biking.

It's HUGE, but the review said it tracks satellites better than the newer and smaller 405. I got it so I could track my speed, distance and heart rate. You can also sign up for some online services that track your workouts and can make pretty cool maps.

Re: Let's Talk Watches

i found this one pretty amazing for a while:
(takes a while until you fully understand the mechanism it uses to tell time. very complex mechanics. price is not listed but will likely be in the 100k range.)

http://www.urwerk.com/watches_202_altin.asp

in the more reasonable price range i like watches like these (IWC for the win):

https://www.iwc.com/messepopup_2009/...os_3767-en.asp

unfortunately my wrists are quite thin and all the big watches look stupid on me.

You need to be more specific about what you want.

It's in your price range, maybe actually a bit cheaper.

Only problem with this is it's a manual wind.

That Incursore is 44mm, there are 46mm versions but not with that "California" dial. Also, there are automatic versions in both sizes, but again, not with the Cali dial.

Manual wind isn't really that big of a deal either.

Let's put it this way. Earlier in the thread Citanul mentions a chap who plonks a fistful of diamonds down on a table to demonstrate how wealthy he is. He does that because he finds the alternative of a Jacob and Co. watch too tacky.
