PVN- Some of those look really good. What's the downside to a quartz movement? I've only been looking at automatics, but I don't remember why really.

The downside is you aren't wearing a tiny machine on your arm with gears and little springs.

Yeah, that, basically. Quartz is, by all practical measures, a far superior technology. High end watches, however, are about anything but practicality.

PVN, or anyone else, do you know of any good stores to buy Seiko watches in Tokyo? I will be there in August for a short while, and I thought I'd go check them out. Some quick Googling has only turned up names of department stores, which I will go to if there isn't some small watch place that people can recommend.

No idea. There's probably a xillion places in Tokyo, but I've never been there.

If you're looking for the higher-end seikos, I think Seiko has different levels of authorized dealers in Japan. Only select dealers will carry Grand Seikos (this may even extend to "professional" watches such as the more expensive pieces in the Prospex line) and there are only a very small number of "Master Shops" that carry limited edition GS pieces and Credor stuff.

Hi,

I'm looking to purchase watches for my groomsmen as a gift. each one will have a personalized engraving/etc, but i'd like the watch to be the same for all of us.

Any suggestions on some nice watches to get that would look good with a tux, but be useful and nice for everyday use? My price range is 300-500 per watch.

Thanks!

Opinions on this manual wind Epos?

Eh. I guess it depends how much. The case looks fairly plain as does the crown. The dial is simple and I guess it's slightly interesting.

Spring bar holes are a drag too. (Look where the strap meets the case, you can see the holes on the outside of it)

How much is it?

THis one is pretty subjective. There are a lot of people who REALLY like drilled lugs.

I wasn't aware of that actually. Is it just an industrial "cheap, simple = good, awesome" type of thing?

I totally dig that concept I just feel the aesthetic of a drilled lug isn't for me.

anyways, the watch is growing on me, tremendously actually.

I think that's a big part of it. Most of the time you hear people who are vocal about it it's in regards to watches like the Submariner that have a tool watch history.

I think it's $425.

Amazon has this watch for $120, and I think it's pretty sweet and would go great w/ a tux (even though I don't think you are supposed to wear watches w/ a tux). I've been thinking about getting it since it's such a great deal.

Also, this Hamilton automatic is pretty sick at $465

Some japanese suggestions. These are moderately sporty but I think you can pull that off pretty easily, especially if they're wearing actual tuxedoes (as opposed to something more elaborate like white tie/tails).

Quartz, 10-year battery, +/- 20sec year (which is really, really good for this price range), Dia-shield coated titanium (which makes it much, much more scratch resistant than steel). There's a white dial version (SBQJ017).

Also quartz. Black dial available.

A little dressier. Automatic. Black dial available, but with silver hands. Personally, I wouldn't consider this piece without the blued hands.

Even dressier, but with some nice retro touches. Also automatic.

I actually dig the design for a very casual watch, as I do with a lot of their designs. Nixon has always been close with the surf/skate/snowboard culture. I've never heard of anyone having a major problem with them in terms of function, which is all you can really ask for in their price range.

I remember a discussion in this thread about a watch that only shows if its day or night or something. It didn't have any minute or hour dials. I think it was a Patek Philppe. What's the name of this watch?

Avons is almost def a Tag, I don't know their stuff really though but if you look around I imagine you'll find it.

Other random Wire watchery things that I noticed:

Bunk and Stringer have their bracelets sized so loose the case will often end up resting inside their wrist which is a little weird.

Daniels wears a Luminor.

Herc wears a yellow faced diver that looks a ton like a Seiko SKXA35 but it has circle markers so not sure what it is.

I REALLY like this watch.

I just came across some free moneys. So, I am considering buying something new. I am thinking, something sweet with a brown leather band for matching purposes and variety.
