Thanks for the help a while back guys.

I ended up going into Boston and looking at watches. Rolexes looked unattractive. I did not see one I was partial to.

Pictures do not do Lange and Sohne justice. Those are some beautifully crafted, cool ****ing watches and probably my next selection.

The Jaegar Master Hometime was quite nice but I found the face a bit bland. I was more impressed by the Glashutte watches, and ended up purchasing the Senator Chronograph for around $5k.

I cannot find a picture of the movement for my model but it is a very attractive looking watch. I may get another watch with a brown leather band instead of black before the Lange and Sohne in the future.

went to the Tourneau store during lunch. 4 floors of every watch major watch brand. it was heaven (though i would never buy from there because of their prices). so many beautiful watches, so little time. if you're ever in nyc, do yourself a favor and go the store. it's on 57th between 5th and madison.

The Wire fans:

does anyone know which watch do Stringer and Avon use throughout season 1?

sweet glashutte, looks alot less formal than the jaeger! i could never wear a patek or lange because too many unpredictable $IIt could happen daily...and if i'm going to buy a 30k+ watch i'm going to wear the hell out of it. but yeah lange is pretty awesome.

FYP to reflect my own sad life.
I hate everyone in this thread- with a white hot passion that only jealousy can incite- who has unlimited baller poker money and buys ultimo-supro-top-top watches I can only dream of; I hope you all get the superaids and die.

Found a nice vintage Lancaster Hamilton with a blown mainspring at a yard sale two weeks ago. Fixed and polished 'er up- got it looking pretty as a picture and running like a top, yessir, that watch is now worth ONE HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS! (or, less than the strap buckle on many of the watches in this thread)

As long as no one bags a Voutilainen, I can cope. If someone does, I cannot read this thread ever again.

what are drawbacks to quartz watches (if any)?

i just tried on this one today and have fallen in love with it and am thinking (as i do every other day with a watch) that it's The One. it's in my price range (prob cuz it's quartz) and i like that it has chronographs and is not too thick (again prob cuz it's quartz)

if automatic is a big deal, then i'm partial to this one (tho there are no chronographs, but i do like that it has numbers for seconds, whereas top one does not):

They don't have "soul." Which is just weaselwords for saying "they're too utilitarian."

From a practical standpoint, quartz watches are superior to mechanicals in just about every regard. They are more accurate, they are more shock-resistant, they a cheaper.

They are more susceptible to EMP, but if you have nukes going off around you you've got bigger problems.

Batteries are another weak point in quartz watches. Even batteryless watches like eco-drive or kinetic use capacitors that eventually wear out.

A lot of people think quartz watches don't last as long as mechanicals, but that's probably because most quartz watches they are familiar with use el-cheapo movements. There's nothing inherent about quartz that wears out faster IMO, there are serviceable quartz movements out there designed with 50+ year lifespans.

at first glance, i thought this watch looks great. but one thing that i don't like is the blackness of the face. it's not very black. compare it to the blackness of the band for example. now look at pics of other black watches (hamiltons, IWC, etc in this thread) and notice how black the faces are compared to the band. i'm assuming "face" is the correct term (i dunno). could be lighting, but the band is really black.

when I google a watch, I can't tell if the sites that come up that sell the watch are shady or not... is there a list of reputable online watch sellers? Or do people always buy at a B&M watch store? sorry i'm a huge n00b.

A couple of things you can do are to go to a popular watch forum and search for the name of the site. Someone has probably asked about it. If not, I'd probably stay away. The other thing is to go to the watchmaker and ask for a list of authorized dealers. That way you can be perfectly safe and know the manufacturer's warranty will be honored.

i've tried on a hell of alot of watches the past couple of week and have fallen in love with this one: http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/jomashop_2051_68211123 but i'm not ready to spend ~$3k (msrp) or almost $2k online. maybe in a couple of months. so i was at Macys of all places and thought this watch looked great, tho it is Guess and is probably a piece of crap. it looks like an expensive well-built watch if one doesn't see the brand name. for $115 and a great fashion accessory, i bought it.

The important thing is hthat it tells the time and you enjoy wearing it. As your budget gets larger you can turn to a different class of watch.
Shame about the photo though, it is a little difficult to see the detail on the watch.
