Am thinking about getting this watch for about $1350. It's an Omega De Ville Prestige Quartz. Size is about 34mm. What do you guys think about it?

I am not a fan of paying that much for a quartz 3 hander.

my other choice would be the prestige automatic which looks more or less the same but at 36mm. price would be about 2000ish. would you guys recommend getting the automatic instead of the quartz? sorry but i'm a watch noob.

I would recommend quartz for people who don't care about anything other than the looks of the watch. It's cheaper than an automatic version and dials usually look 99% the same (obviously the difference will be in the Quartz vs Automatic printing on the dial).

The reason I don't like paying $1350 for a 3 hander quartz is that $1000 of that $1350 is the Omega Badge.

At least with the automatic, you can say, well there is the co-axial escapement, the COSC certification, the movement finish.

If you are just buying it for looks, I would tell you to just get a Seiko quartz or Citizen eco drive dress watch with Sapphire crystal for $200 to $300.

If you want the Omega badge but don't want to shell out for the automatic, then go for that one you posted.

If you want a mechanical dress watch but find the big name Swiss makers too expensive then we can probably offer up some suggestions.

honestly i'm not that much into the mechanics of the watch, im looking more for the aesthetic design + quality (and of cus the social "status" it brings, sort of). and i don't really like my watch face to be clustered, would much prefer the cleaner classier looks. i haven't really found anything i fancy from the cheaper brands like seiko etc, and really digged the model above when i tried it at my local omega dealer. what other models/brands would you guys recomend?

then just get that one because I don't think any other suggestion will really fit your criteria as well. Its difficult to suggest things based mostly on aesthetics.

around $3k, you can always go for the Speedmaster Professional though be aware thats a manual wind.

Or for something thats not as often seen, you can maybe go for one of the Sinn Chronos like a 6030 or a 900.
Thanks for the help, I'm leaning more toward the Longines too.
Any one else have opinions/suggestions?

I agree as well, the Longines is both nicer and will hold it's value better as the brand is held in higher regard. It's a really good choice imo.

Just purchased a used Tissot Le Locle from a friend for $225. Pretty happy based on a retail of about $350-$375 if you look hard. Amazon price is $500.

One of my favorite entry level automatics. One of the most affordable ways of getting a 2824-2 based automatic and it has sapphire crystal to boot. Also, by definition, its an in house movement.

Wonderful purchase and I hope you enjoy it.

The black dial version looks nice too

Yeah this is my first automatic watch and am really enjoying it. I do like the black dial also but since I bought it used didn't have much options. However, the price was unbeatable. My friend is a watch collector and had recently bought it second hand as well. I told him if he ever wanted to sell it I would happily take it off his hands. 2 weeks later he was ready to purchase something else and came looking to sell it. The deployment clasp is sweet.

The advantage of the white dial over the black dial is that the date wheel is white so looks kind of out of place on the black dial version whereas on the white dial its pretty nice.

For anyone looking to purchase a first watch...please look no further than a Speedmaster Professional (3572.50). Trust me, YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS PURCHASE. Lots of rich history behind this watch. Much better than any other watch you can get in this price range. You can probably get in online for 1500-1800 used.

don't kill me guys, but why would you care about anything other than looks of the watch? So u spend hundreds of $$$s for it's reliability or sth? I guess 40$ cell phones have better reliability (and have way more functions) than watches. Watches are just to show off, therefore looks is the most importants thing.
Someone please explain me if I'm wrong.

Basically, you're projecting.

Some people dont put any worth into "showing off."

e.g. you buy a sports car to track for a hobby, not to attract gold diggers

you probably mean the 3570.50 with the acrylic crystal and SS back. the 3572 is hugely popular and scarcer with the display back and costs about $2200-$2500 used.

Even the 3570.50 is fairly difficult to find for sub $2k used these days. Too many people touting the greatness of the Speedy that prices have been fairly elevated.

For a first watch, I actually think new collectors should really try to study up before going for a speedmaster pro as there are so many versions of the speedmaster that new collectors can easily make the mistake of buying a less rare model for elevated prices.

Just a few:

- I don't like the jumping seconds hand of a quartz
- I miss the mechanical click when I push the buttons on a quartz
- I like the idea of having a little spring driven, mechanical machine on my arm
- I absolutely love the wobble of my Valjoux 7750 rotor

All this makes a mechanical watch feel more "alive" than a soulless quartz.

I'm aware that this probably makes no sense if you haven't owned a few watches yourself. It's hard to explain in words.

BTW, I own a Casio Edifice Chrono. Sometimes I don't feel like going through the little ritual of winding a watch, setting the date, setting the time etc. and I throw it on for convenience. And because it's my daily beater for work, it even gets more wrist time than my automatics.
