I dunno, I don't so much associate Pans with douchebags as much as with hipsters. Are hipsters usually douchebags? Probably.

don't think hipsters wear watches or if they do, its probably a quartz fashion watch.

Breitling is a semi luxury tool watch maker that actually has good build quality and is priced not ridiculously. They also have a lot of history with watches like the Navitimer.

The ultimate douchebag watch is obviously Uboat. Something is wrong with a watch crossing the 50mm dial size mark that cost $2k but still fitted with mineral glass.

Just saw an article on the watch below. Looks pretty awesome to me. Will for sure get one. Though I suspect >50 % of this forum will hate it.

If the Big Daddys from Bioshock wore watches it'd def be the bronze one.

100% agree

The Panerai douchebag thing probably comes from its celebrity douchebag collectors more than regular collectors.

On the one hand you have awesome badasses like Stallone who started the trend, Arnold, Bill Clinton being Panerai wearers/afficionados, on the other hand you have guys like Carlos Mencia.

Fydor,
I would suggest checking out the Hamilton Jazzmaster series as well. This watch in particular might fit your tastes:

I actually have a Jazzmaster Maestro (silver dial tho) coming in the mail as I write this. I still don't know if it's gonna wear too big on my wrist but I got a good deal so whatever I guess. Maybe it'll show up in the marketplace in a week or so :P

edit: I'm not sure how hard (or easy) it is to find bracelets for the Jazzmasters, though, if that is important to you...

Between those 2 I prefer the Longines. More pedigree and I prefer the tricompax layout a bit more.

around $3k, you can always go for the Speedmaster Professional though be aware thats a manual wind.

Or for something thats not as often seen, you can maybe go for one of the Sinn Chronos like a 6030 or a 900.

Long time lurker, but first time poster here on the Watches thread. My birthday is coming up, and my wife wants to buy me a watch.

Any opinions on the Citizen EcoDrive Signature Grand Complication?

Thanks, in advance.

Its a good higher end recharging quartz that has a lot of functions.

Do you have any specific questions?

Amoeba,

I was hoping to find someone who owns the Signature Grand Complication and whether they're happy with it. In lieu of that, at least someone who's seen one up close in person who actually would consider buying that watch in that price range ($1k) over the Hamilton watches that seem to be favoured around here.

There was one other thing that I have noticed: Not too much love for the Patek Phillipes around here. Not flashy enough for poker players, or too far out of the typical poster around here? I'm coveting a Patek 5205 (it's been on my desktop since I saw the first pics from Basel 2010), but I'm still a long way from putting that one on my wrist. ;-)

Well, its apples and oranges since the Citizen is a quartz and the Hamiltons in the 1k range are mechanical. With a mechanical, you won't get any one of the grande complications (minute repeater, rattaprante, perpetual calender, etc...) in the $1k range, not to even mention all of them. Mechanicals with all those functions will run mid 6 figures at the minimum. So you're rarely going to be considering a Citizen grande complication vs a Hamilton.

We don't talk about Patek Phillipes much since they are pricewise out of almost all of our budgets and their most coveted pieces have been vintage pieces. But we talk about ultra luxury brands like A Lange and Sohne and Patek occasionally.

Heh, i'm a total newbie with watches, but i found this thread. What do you think about this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stuhrling-Or...838&sr=1-11980

Plz don't flame me if i'm asking stupid questions.

I think you can do a bit better at that price. Sturling isn't known for great quality and I have no idea what krysterna is under crystal material.

Oh, ok. Thanks.

I might have exaggerated when i said i'm a newbie when it comes to watches, in fact i know nothing about them. I just thought it looked nice and is in the correct price area. I have no idea about qualities and such. Any recommendations?

In that pricerange just get Citizen eco drive or Seiko quartz or Casio if you are going quartz. Try to get something with Sapphire crystal instead of mineral.

seiko 5s if you are going automatic, under $100 if you look hard.

I would recommend Seiko orange monster $150 or so but style wise thats probably not dressy enough for you.

For automatics, I also like the Bernhardt Binnacle Anchor for $199 due to the bracelet and sapphire crystal and general build quality, not sure how much shipping is to Europe though.
