I do have one but I'm not too worried about passive in page ads like this. Popups and other crap are filtered. I actually like seeing what people are promoting in the market.

Many better options than this for around the same price. In fact there is one right below the picture of the black TAG above-in the same post even.

The Omega has an MSRP of $6,000. The Tag day-date goes for 4ish

what about a classic understated omega speedmaster? it's iconic and is less than 4k msrp. i advise all my friends just getting into watches to look past tag's marketing and choose something else.

I'd like to buy a nice watch, which by my standards is between $500 and $1000. Can someone answer a few questions for me?

1. What are the pros/cons of buying a watch for $750 that retails for $750 (say some kind of Citizen or Seiko) versus a $750 Tag or Raymond Weil or Hamilton or Oris that is new/slightly used from a reputable seller on ebay/timezone that has/had a retail of $1200-$2000?

2. What type of care does a watch from either of the 2 groups above entail? I'm not too interested in putting $300 worth of work into a watch every 2 years to keep it functioning.

3. A lot of watches seem to have something like a 2 year warranty. That makes me worried, because $750 seems like a lot to toss away in two years if the damn thing dies. Reasonable fear, or stupid concern?

Thanks for your help. Links to watches I might like or brands are welcomed.

To answer your question about type of care, the mechanical watches will usually require a service once every ~5-10 yrs depending on who made it and movement, are probably not going to be sending it for repair unless something happens to it (IE: Crystal shatters/gasket problem etc). I am not sure how often you will have to change a battery on a quartz watch but possibly every 1-2 yrs? I don't think batteries are expensive as servicing an automatic but you don't have to do it as often. As far as warranty goes I have never heard of anyone having their watch die from normal use even 10 years after they bought it.

Now whether you want to get a Citizen/Seiko or TAG/RW/Hamilton or Oris is up to you and it's a decision you will have to stay with for several years if you decide not to buy a new watch. Maybe if we knew exactly why you are a buying a watch then we could help you out on. Are you buying a watch because you need something that tells you the time and date or do you want a watch because you think they are really fascinating and aesthetically pleasing?

Solsek:

Thanks for the response. I enjoy wearing a watch. I have 2 now but they're just cheapies- a leather band Bulova and a silver Kenneth Cole. I want a nice watch that I can have and wear for some time (5? 10? years) and feel good about. If I was going to spend $750, should I get something that retails for that/below that, like a Citizen/Seiko, or get a Hamilton/Oris/Tag that is discounted for some reason? I guess I'm having trouble explaining to myself why I should spend $750 on a watch that tells time more or less just as well as a $150 watch.

The watches on ebay that are new with numbers, box, etc and selling for less than retail, are they some sort of defective models or gray market or what? Is there a reason to be concerned about a seller with 2500 sales selling a MSRP watch of $2500 for $1000 new?

Thanks- I'm new to this game and admittedly didn't read through this huge thread, so if something like this has previously been answered I apologize.

manupod, watches rarely sell for MSRP even if you buy them from an authorized dealer. The thing with EBAY is that you have to be a bit more alert to fakes and you also might lose out on warranty with some brands.

As to what you should get, like what solsek said, that really depends on you. both your cheapies will easily last 5, 10 years.

I think that you should first decide whether you are getting a quartz watch or a mechanical watch. A common question from people just getting in to watches is why pay premium for a mechanical watch when it won't run as accurately as a quartz watch that is maybe 1/5th the price.

I think of it this way. Imagine tomorrow there appears on the market a $10k electric car that has 400 horsepower but sounds like a vacuum cleaner. That would be my analogy to quartz watches. It would be a great value but you would perhaps miss the feel of a combustion engine in the same way that some of us yearn for the romanticism of a mechanical movement.
