WOW that looks awesome. Sweet watch.

Looks like I'm dumping a bunch of my boutique-ish watches and getting sucked in to the Panerai craze... arrrgh.. I'm obsessed... between PAM 000 and PAM 112 right now.. painted and solid case back or sandwich and exhibition back. Kind of feel the plain face models I'm looking at I should stick to the more rugged/tool look in the 000.

Montblanc is the world's most famous manufacturer of expensive pens, so the watches are prolly high quality as well, but 7k sounds a bit overpriced. They make the pens in Germany, but IIRC their watches are from Switzerland.

That grey panomatic lunar is fairly new so I haven't seen a lot of it on the market yet but I'm going to guess MSRP of 20k+ which will likely result in a market price of 14k or so.

On another subject, Blancpain bracelets are also pretty cool.

Mont Blanc fairly recently acquired Minerva so now they have in house movement which is always a plus.

Thinking about making my next purchase a Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece. Any thoughts on Maurice Lacriox? From what I can gather it seems like they make quality automatic timepieces but what ruins their brand is their production of quartz watches. Any of you guys own one?

Almost all brands make quartz, so I don't think that in particular matters much. This is especially true with ladies watches.

In terms of watches that I really like the look of, I'm really a fan of the Breguet XXI Flyback Chrono

It might just be that with their pricing of more expensive watches, the quartz watches they make make the brand seem less exclusive. Imagine if Rolex starting making quartz watches, what would that do to their brand name to watch enthusiasts? There are also many brands out there with similar pricing to ML watches that do not make quartz watches (yeah rolex makes quartz watches but not on the scale of ML). I think ML makes 150000 watches/year and 110000 are quartz.

It is true that Montblanc is probably the most famous pen manufacturer, but most pen enthusiasts avoid them like the plague. Fame != quality.

However, the watches have been getting great reviews lately, and some of their more high-end models are fantastic watches.

Goose: They are neither a top-quality watchmaker or over-priced rubbish: they reside somewhere in the middle, and it sounds like they are trying to make strides, ya know? I'd check out the Montblanc forum on Timezone for lots of good information.

For many years, Maurice Lacroix were considered one of the best of the entry-level fine watches. They have upped their prices in the past three years or so and are trying to position themselves at the next higher level. I think the jury is still out whether their watches justify their new price point.

On the other hand, they are still good watches and some of the watches in the masterpiece line (particularly the retrogrades) are just beautiful, and you will not be disappointed by them.

pvn, yes - I did know Rolex made quartz watches but its not on the same scale as Maurice Lacroix. 2/3 of ML's watches are quartz where I doubt Rolex even makes 1/10 of their watches quartz.

Where do you get those ML figures? It seems like none of their current men's watches are quartz.

I don't really know what "exclusivity" means. I think it's just a word people throw around when they don't know what else to say. It's like trashing the NSX because there are some schlubs driving $20k honda civics.

This. As far as I know, ML make very few quartz watches.

I found a few numbers (they could be a bit off on TimeZone/WatchuSeek) on watch forums. They could very well be quite off from the true numbers but nobody seemed to question them. If I can find those threads later today I will post links. Those threads may have been several years old so I may have been quoting old information so please don't slit my throat.

No slitting here... I don't feel like you have to prove anything to me. I just don't think it's true

ML makes some great, lovely watches. Look at the rest of the TimeZone threads on the company. They are well-liked. If you like the ML masterpiece line (and you really should), get it and enjoy.

I mean part of the reason that having a brand that makes a lot of quartz watches brings down the value of the brandname is that you end up having a lot of people run around with the cheaper quartz watches from that brand name.

But honestly, I have never seen anybody wear a ML quartz watch and I also wasn't aware they made quartz watches so I think you don't have to worry about this issue.
