$929 on Costco/amazon

This one may be too sporty.

I was checking out the Tissot T-racing series but that is probably too sporty. BTW. Wife said <$1000 may be a possibility.

There are a ****load of awesome divers you can get for less than $1000. Boschett Cave Dweller-S would be pretty high on the list.

$650ish

Benarus Worldiver, perhaps.

$950. (Benarus Remora is due in a few months, looks nice).

Seiko Shogun is a little over your number and Japanese pieces scare a lot of people off.

Halios Bluering, Marathon GSAR,

Ocean7 has a few pieces in your range:

Bali Hai

(they also have a pretty sweet GMT diver coming soon)

Chronographs, not so much unless you are willing to go quartz. There are a few autos you can find sub $1k but it's slim pickings.

Cool watches pvn. Though I don't like how the Seiko looks like a submariner knockoff. I curious how you know of so many lesser known watch companies. Is it from reading watch forums?

Thanks! That's a lot of good pieces to start researching!

Second the Boschett. I've got my Cave Dweller on right now. It's pretty far from dressy though, so be aware of that. I also dig the Bernhardt Globemaster, even though it's another Rolly homage.

I know these are all divers, but I don't know too much about sub-$1k chronos, so I can't help much there. Maybe check out Hamilton as well.

btw, wrist shots make watches look bigger, none of them are as big as they look...

Between just Watchuseek and TimeZone alone you would have enough reading to keep you going for weeks.

The BaliHa'i guys are well known on the Watchuseek diver forum.

I think Voutilainen watches are made based on pre-orders and have pretty long waiting lists. Not sure about prices, but probably starts at around $50k or so.. Here is a nice TR from someone getting his new Voutilainen watch, gives little insight on how private watch makers operate and so on...

Yeah the Voutilainen watches are really badass. I think my favorite is the Masterpiece, #6, the decimal repeater one.

I have a "Kinetic" wind watch that I bought several years ago; one of those which are wound by your natural body movement as you wear them. Besides having a very poor calendar, it has one major design flaw. There is no way to wind it aside from shaking it around.

Motion is fine for winding the watch incrementally while you're wearing it, but it's pretty inefficient for trying to wind it all at once, when it's been wound down. So they sell these laughable "winders" which essentially keep the watch in motion continuously while you're not wearing it.

What I'm wondering is if perhaps there's a newer generation out now which has addressed this design flaw. Anyone know about this?

If you can't wind it without shaking it, it's broken....the vast majority of automatics (self winding watches) can be manually wound. Typically you pull the crown out all the way, then push it back in to its inner-most notch, then turn clockwise.

Thanks. That must be the next generation I'm looking for.

Mine came with instructions which direct you to "swing it in an arc" or some such nonsense.

Kinetic and automatic are different.

Automatics are mechanical watches that have a rotor that winds the mainspring. Some can be handwound and some cant.

Kinetic watches are quartz movements that have a rotor that generates electricity to recharge the battery (technically I believe they use a capacitor instead of a battery but it's the same idea).

Kinetics are notorious for taking a long time to fully charge. There are some new "Direct Drive" kinetics that can be charged by winding the crown, but they're on the high end (as far as kinetics go).
