Paying $500 to scratch that itch probably isn't terrible, if it makes you happy it'll be worth gambling on what is probably a iffy product.

It's definitely something aimed at "faux class" though, to thread merge momentarily

See now this is what I don't get. When you ask an owner of a real swiss tourbillon watch why he paid so much for a watch, he'll likely defend it with statements about the troubillon's difficult manufacturability, construction, and mechanical complexity.

Yet when I decide to buy a Chinese version of it for the same reasons, its somehow not cool?

"faux class" would be me going out and buying whatever rolex, omega, tag heuer that had the biggest badge.

Just cuz they say it doesn't mean people believe it to be their true motivation for the purchase. They're neat, intricate, but they're status symbols, used to signal you have more money without encrusting your watch with diamonds. And anyone who knows enough to know what a tourb is will most likely come to the conclusion you are trying to go for that kind of status symbol on the cheap.

Most people of course, will have no idea what the hell it is and just think you have some neat quirky open mechanical watch.
So what does it matter, if it makes ya happy, go for it.

dibbs,

it sounds like he doesn't give a **** what other people, and in particular probably high end watch snobs, think about the watch. for under 1k he can get a nice looking watch with a tourb that he enjoys and thinks is cool. screw the haters, who represent like .001% of the universe anyway in this case.

Ya I think it's a reasonable price to pay for the pleasure, only thing I'd recommend against strongly is buying that 5.5k one from them, which apparently amoeba didn't have any interest in anywho.

Just checked Seagulls site as I've never really looked into their tourbs, cheapest is 4k

new to this awesome thread, lurked for a while since the beginning but I'd like some help with what is literally the first watch I'm going out of my way to getting.

edf, please help me find a dress watch that:

- is metal, preferably with singles links
- is circular
- has a 40-45mm dial
- preferably 10mm thickness max. (thin wrist)
- roman numerals on the dial much preferred
- anywhere from silver to ~75% grey is fine

Thanks. I have a budget in mind, but I haven't found even one watch that matched all that, mechanism aside

niceeee, price obv and simplicity of the dial makes me vv like the second; not really feeling a cluttered chronograph with dress shirts

thanks, i'll def look in this direction

is it stupid to want to replace the straps with a bracelet?

afaik, other than cartiers, roman numerals are pretty elusive nowadays on bracelet dress watches

crappy designer watch alert

pretty bland watch in terms of it being a watch, but at that price bracket it's the only thing i've ever seen that is even slightly close to what I want my eventual watch to look like

ideally I'd want to find several watches in a wide price range so I can choose how balla I want to go afterwards.

Your just going to keep buying roman numeral bracelet watches?

nah man, i'm looking for a selection over a wide price range, buying just one out of that when I eventually decide on how much I'm willing to spend.

guess i just don't like setting a budget until i see all my choices

I was going to suggest Longines Master Collection, but they only pair roman numerals with a black face. Hard to say without a price range, but you could also try Seagull, Tag, IWC.

This B&M seems to fit the bill.

Anyone have any recommendations for where to buy watches in Vegas?

I'm heading there for WSOP and will probably pick up either a Hamilton Jazzmaster Maestro or a Longines Master Collection. (or a Zenith Chronomaster Open Grande Date if I run good)

Also, Anyone know any similar partially-skeletonised watches like the Zenith that are <$3k?

Yeah I think it looks like a way more expensive watch.

They also make the same watch with a vintage hamilton movement, which is pretty cool imo. Those are a bit more expensive.

yeah i'm really into that one, but i'm pretty sure i'll ruin it by trying to swap the straps for bracelet; the round case makes it obvious that it was never designed for anything else.

call it indoctrination or whatever, but seeing IV instead of IIII on a dial seems odd to me now

mentioned earlier was looking for a vintage breitling navitimer...got one and it's so crisp and clean for an almost 50 yr old piece. the iwc also came and while i love it (gonna be the daily wearer), tbh i have an instant bond to the 806.
