Re: Let's Talk Watches

kak,

I recently picked up one of these:

They retailed for about $1k, but they are unfortunately discontinued. You can pick them up NOS for less than $500 when they pop up.

It's a pretty standard ETA 2801 movement, 44mm case, which is nice, but it takes 20mm straps which look pretty skimpy on such a big case.

You are right... Maurice Lacroix has a Masterpiece Retrograde. (also a cool watch)

Longines is the Master Retrograde, not Masterpiece.

It has a rubber band if this makes a difference.

About 5-6k. That's a pretty tight watch, i'm not usually into square face!

What has won you over with Patek watches aside from the design? I assume you know a lot about how they make them, etc...

it's a somewhat well known brand among watch people but it's basically unknown to the general public which i quite like.. wearing a rolex can be tiresome for the opposite reason (though walking into a watch shop with a ss daytona almost guarantees good service. i was "lucky" enough to pay retail for mine). as for patek, the level of finishing is excellent and the designs are timeless (imo of course).

i've owned many brands and kept looking "up" for my next watch. it sounds kinda snobby but i never wanted my next serious watch to be from a "lesser" brand than ones that i currently own. as i said before, once i got to look at pateks i just didn't get it. the prices were ridiculous for what you get but now that i own one it's totally justified..

from a pure financial standpoint, they retain value quite well which is important for someone who plans on turning over his watch collection a few more times before he dies.

what i generally tell my friends is when you're shopping for a watch you should have it on your wrist and it should be smiling at you.. That's how you know it's the right watch for you.. when I was in vancouver they had 5107s and 5127s (the next generation) in stock and i more or less knew that day that i had to have a 5107 at some point my life.

I have the Baume Mercier and have to say it's a great watch..

It's very good looking (imo) and it wears very well, only downside is that the it's pretty hard to flip it once you get to that point. Dressier watches are kind of "out" atm, more sports & tool watches now..

Re: Let's Talk Watches

Well, I spent some time trying on some watches today. I've been able to eliminate some watches based on size. I think 44-45mm is where it's at for me. I tried on this Longines today, and it fit very well on my wrist. (List price is $4750, though.)

That makes me think that the previously suggested Longines might be the way to go, since it's the same size and similar design (but within my budget).

Then I saw this, which is the same thing with roman numerals and a black face.

I like the idea of black & brown, because it makes it more versatile, but I'm not sure. What do you think?

I wasn't a fan of the Baume above in person, and a couple of those Oris watches were a little small for me, but this one is 42.5mm. I haven't seen it in person, though.

Re: Let's Talk Watches

Hey guys new to the watch thread, but I have been contemplating getting a fairly nice watch for awhile now. I have purchased watches from SWI company in the past and I'm ready to take a step up. The main watch im looking at right now is this one from shopnbc.com (whom i've bought from before in the past) my pricerange is ~600 and I would be willing to go up or down depending on the quality/prestige of the watch.

What do you guys think about this?

# Bracelet: Stainless Steel Bracelet

# Clasp: Deployant
# Bracelet Length: 7"
# Water Resistance: 3 ATM - 30 meters - 99 feet
# Case Measurements: 35 mm
# Model Number: 605962
