After literally a year of thinking I'm close to pulling the trigger on one of these (first >$400 watch purchase):

Retails for about 7k AUD:

About 4k AUD:

4K AUD as well:

I probably would have already bought the Longines if I didn't go and try on the IWC this weekend (obv loved it). The Baume was one I had never considered until the sales girl suggested it and I tried it on, I'm really liking it now and it seems a lot better than the Longines for the same price. I'm hoping to haggle down which ever one I decide to go for, but I really can't make up my mind. My only hesitation for not getting the IWC is 7k seems like a lot to spend on a first higher end watch. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't know much about the Baume but from the pic it's my least favorite looking of the 3. The IWC spitfire looks pretty sick in silver and would probably be most people's favorite out of the 3 were it not for the price gap. If I couldn't go for the IWC, I'd go for the longines but all 3 are sick watches. I also like the transperant back case on the longines.

I didn't look up the other two but for the Longines you should not be paying much more than $2k USD. At least that's what it goes for on the internet (grey market).

What don't you like about the Baume?

Yea they all are a lot cheaper on the grey market sites but I don't think I'm comfortable buying over the net on any site I've come across so far. Maybe people can chime in with experience of buying over the net (in Australia) and any reputable sites. I did a bit of research through google about some sites (eg. authenticwatches.com) and have read horror stories about warranties not being honoured so I'm probably just gonna go the local B&M AD route for peace of mind.

It's 44mm and ya I tried it on I like the way it feels, truthfully I can't wear a watch smaller then 40mm they just seem so small I dunno.

I just sold my non chrono Spitfire and bought this watch. I love it at 42mm and while if I didn't have any black faced watches I probably would opt for the black faced one, this watch is really nice imo.

Best price I found was at www.alanfurman.com, $3170 I believe. But I have to wait about 6 weeks to get it in.

Black faced version;

I was at my local dealer yesterday and he informed me of problems with serial numbers being removed from watches that were sold over internet and the problems that would incur if I needed to get it fixed. Anyone ever hear of this and just how big a problem is it?

Yeah think the 45.5 I saw must have included the crown.

I agree on size, aside from my Rolex Submariner which I believe is 40mm I just dumped an IWC which was 39mm because it seemed small. Don't think I'd buy smaller than 42mm at this point.

Yeah I'm not advising for or against buying on the internet. I haven't bought enough watches online to give such advice. I'd feel better about buying from an AD too. I'm just saying you should try to negotiate a price somewhat close to the grey market price even though the AD is never going to match it.

The bigger grey market sellers don't remove serial numbers, but they do tell you up front that all warranty work has to go through them (i.e. You don't have an Omega warranty, you have a jomashop warranty).

Considering I live in Norway am I going to have problems servicing my watch through for example amazon? Time is mostly what I'm worried about.

most big grey dealers won't have manufacture warranty or packaging, but some smaller ones might...you just gotta dig and ask. of course at the end of the day it's your money, you gotta do what's most comfortable for you. if you go grey w/o warranty you gotta figure whether the savings outweigh the risk of the watch breaking down (and resale value w/o box/papers). if i buy a breitling/iwc/glashutte/zenith/any 3k+ watch and it breaks down i'm probably not gonna send it back to the grey dealer with their watchmaker but just bite the bullet and pay the service cost with that brand.

Nah not sure where you got that idea? By customs duty you mean GST right? I might leave the purchase till I go overseas in a few months so I can save on GST but everyone knows how to do that.

Isn't there a distinct possibility that you will not be able to get service from an AD if you do not have the paperwork? You would then have to go to a "regular" watchmaker which could cost a lot more and be much harder to find, right? I seem to remember a note in my Tag Heuer box to this effect.

Yup, this is true. Without the authentication papers, the AD will not take it back since the watchmakers working for the company will not accept to work on it. They require the papers to prove its authenticity before they will repair your watch.

no, i never take anything to an AD. they're usually clueless and even worse some are complete a**holes. if your watch has the serial #s intact, just treat it like it's out of OEM warranty...warranty card/papers is not necessary anymore. since you're paying out of pocket contact breitling/panerai/iwc/etc and send the watch to them directly.

either way i would totally avoid an AD unless you have a great relationship with them...i've had to send in a breitling and panerai in under warranty and DIY was a much simpler, and speedier process than waiting for an AD.

When i got my TAG a year back or so i wanted to get it from a legit store rather than from the internet because i wasnt experienced with buying expensive **** online. But the price which was close to 1k higher than the internet price was def non negotiable. Worth a shot tho iguess.

Try another store next time. All the watches end of coming from the same place anyway.
