If it has a thermocompensated movement it will almost certainly say something like "certified chronometer" on the dial.

Yes, it does say certified chronometer (not chronograph) on the dial (French though imo cause that's how the swiss roll). So I assume TC quartz or w/e > quartz? I guess that's a relief, at least it's not just a pimped out timex?

just checked my SA and it says this on the back of the case, no idea if this is at all helpful or wtf it means though

SA's are all automatic, right?

For quartz, certified chronometer means +/- 0.02 seconds/day. For mechanical, it's +6/-4 seconds per day. There are some other technical specifications, but that's the bulk of it.

Yeah, thermocompensated movements are quite unusual, even in expensive watches. Basicaly, quartz watches will run at different rates at different temperatures, but the change is fairly predictable. So if you know the temperature, you can adjust the number of vibrations from the quartz crystal you expect for one second.

I have a non-thermocompensated seiko with the 8F56 movement, it's rated at +/- 20 seconds per year, which is pretty much the best non-thermocompensated movement available. BUT, that rating is only good if you wear the watch 12 hours or more per day. Obviously it's calibrated to something close to human body temperature.

Thermocompensated movements will usually be in the +/- 10 seconds/year range. The Citizen A660 (found in the Chronomaster) and the Seiko 9F62 are better than +/- 5 seconds/year.

It says "chronographe certifie chronometre etanche ____M" the blank being a number, probably 300 right?

I'm pretty sure the Super Avengers only use automatic movements, lots of other Avenger models will pack quartz, not the SA's though. Could be wrong but after some Googling I can't seem to find any.

According to Chronolog 09, the only quartz Breitling Avenger is the Avenger Seawolf Chrono, which uses a "SuperQuartz thermocompensated quartz electronic, fast-action timezone change" movement.

This is why people think Breitlings are ridiculous. Their marketing buzzwords are almost as gauche and baroque as the watches themselves.

I'm assuming that "fast action timezone change" just means an independently adjustable hour hand.

I have no clue what that actually means. Says nothing in the catalog about it, except my excerpt noted in the specs.

I still love my Navitimer though.

Ok I am thinking about trying to win this tomorrow for about $400. Oris Artelier Small Second Date. I have read some good reviews about Oris but some that say it loses about 5 seconds/day. NOt sure if that is standard or not. Anyone own an Oris? Thoughts?

Oris makes pretty solid stuff. 5 seconds/day is very good for an automatic. Personally, I'm not a fan of sub-dials for seconds or of the date indicators like that, but that's just personal preference.

pvn,

i'm thinking about picking up a simple military style watch as an every day beater. i'd prefer to keep it <$400. as an added challenge i'd like to keep it as close to 40mm as possible, i think. i looked around watchuseek forums for military/pilots watches a lot, and i saw a ton of stuff in the 44-48mm range, but they most of those looked HUGE even on the guys who bought them.

as always, thanks for the advice. maybe one day i'll actually buy one of these things.

Have you looked at these? Might be close to what you are looking for.

Hmm, that's a tough one. I can't think of anything that fits your size and price range at the same time. Everything is either a lot cheaper, a lot more expensive, or way too big.

I'll have to think for a bit and see if I can come up with something.

Jaeger LeCoultre Master Hometime w/a leather band that was in the last thread, it's like $5300.

the band is something to think about. You guys think this thing is alright to wear casually, like even w/a hoodie or whatever? Or no wai

I'm pretty sure it does mean the hand thing. Mine has that (don't know what they called it though).

pvn,

i'm fine with a lot cheaper

jesster,

yeah i'd looked at those a bit but the smallest of the "clean" looking ones is a 44mm i think? obviously not that ridiculously bigger than a 40mm, but still really big, imo?

Stowa makes some 40mm pilots, these go for $600ish, I could swear there was one for $400 in the other thread as I too was thinking of a decent sized pilot for a beater for a while.

arghhh I wanted to just buy it online tonight but can't seem to find the right band color, they're all the lighter brown one instead of dark brown or black or w/e that is

Alright well it doesn't have a band I like perfect, I might get it anyway but I wanna look at other options

So, say I want one watch, maybe two but probably one

price range is like up to say $20k if I see something really sweet, probably less

I don't want nothin with a huge hub or really flashy. I want it to be something sick but I wanna be able to wear it casually, like when I'm just in jeans and a sweater or even a hoodie or a short-sleeved button shirt or t-shirt. I dunno if such a watch exists or if this would be in bad taste or w/e so fill me in. I don't like the idea of buying this thing and only being able to wear it when I put on a button shirt and matching dress shoes or some ****.

All I've ever owned is some $1500 movado I got for winning a poker tournament. But I just decided I want a watch so I'm doing it right.

recommendations?

i saw my first panerai in person today, guy had a really sweet one

said he got it for around 6k but that he "knew a guy", and that it may have possibly been hot on top of that.

it really was the sickest model i've ever seen

it had date on it, and exposed moving watch parts near the 6 o'clock position. sweet sweet ass watch for sure.

If you don't have a problem with rolex I'd take this one

IWC Pilots Classic Black Dial Rose Gold

Personally I would probably have gone with this one:

Omega De Ville Rattrapante Rose Gold Black Dial

I'd buy it and then look around for awhile and see if you still want a $20k watch. By that time, you might have a clearer idea of the styles you like and the manufacturers that catch your eye.
