Let's Talk Watches
Previous Thread: "Let's talk non-Rolex watches.
Please feel free to continue discussions of watches here. As we discovered toward the end of the last thread, there are some really nice Rolexes, so they're a fine topic here as well.
A few notes, from the last thread:
1) Please don't devolve the discussion in to one about the possible shallowness of potential watch buyers. Much of the discussion will be amongst well-to-do people considering buying expensive watches - whatever their reasons are, it's their decision, and they are aware they could buy something else cheaper if all they wanted to do was tell time.
2) With that in mind, almost everyone agrees, loudly, that you should not be buying watches for their investment potential. It's a bad idea.
The standard for watch content on the internet is timezone.com, which is full of great information.

Re: Let's Talk Watches
i know nothing about SWI, but Breitling has a model that's almost identical...and it uses the same valjoux 7750 movement also...the SuperOcean chrono. the B is COSC certified.
the B's dial is less cluttered imo...can't believe i just said that about a breitling

Re: Let's Talk Watches
Yeah that pic I posted does looked clutter but when looking at actual watch it doesnt seem as bad, btw can anyone explain why the watchmaker added 5 10 15 then skipped to 30 on the outer part.

Re: Let's Talk Watches
a guy i know had this on yesterday at a poker game.
at least i think it was this one. He's a serious collector with a LOT of money. He said it was 55k
i'm just not that into rolex though. This has to be like THE top of the line and it didn't do much for me. It's pretty nice, but not like 50k nice- get a clue dude!

Re: Let's Talk Watches
willie,
that watch is pretty hideous, imo. i'm not even a fan of that series of rolexes without the (not as ridiculous as many other diamond encrustings but still pretty ridiculous) diamond encrusting. i don't really know if it's fair to call such a thing "top of the line."
pvn,
well put. i will edit the op to clarify.

i'm assuming that the idea is that people might want to time o 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 60 seconds, but that there are far fewer reasons to want to time to 20, 25, 35, 40, 50, 55 seconds?

Re: Let's Talk Watches
Thanks for starting this thread. I've missed the actual watch-talk that no longer exists in the former forum.

I would also like to add watchuseek.com for good watch content, but, like timezone, these guys are serious watch-geeks, and proudly so. Amazing amount of information and lots of folks eager to answer any brand-, type-, movement-, etc.-questions.

I totally agree. Ever sine I got bitten by the watch bug last fall, and then got my two nice watches from Santa, I am interested in all things watches and read the forums on watchuseek and the other sites daily.
So, as a point of discussion, let me ask why Casio G-Shock in general, and Frogman watches in particular, are so popular and have a great cult following? I love the Frogman watches. Just wish they had atomic timekeeping. If I wouldn't feel guilty about not wearing my Omega, I'd have a Frogman as my everyday watch.

Super cheap beaters that have proven to be durable and have a sick value, pretty simple I think.

Re: Let's Talk Watches
I remember that last thread, glad another is around.
Fwiw, and to say this early, diamond encrusted hunks of precious metal are not in any way the standard, and far from the ne plus ultra of timepeices.
It should be noted, that the manufacture far ahead of all others, patek phillippe, rarely mounts visible diamonds, as the emphasis is intended to be upon workmanship and effort.
The patek Nautilus series is perfection for the sport watch niche.
The most popular versions, which were great investments for those of use who payed attention, were in STAINLESS STEEL. It sells like sick.
THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!!!
It does not matter what a timepiece was made out of for the purist, it is a matter of complication and aesthetic fit.
I just dont want to see another diamond covered hunk of **** passed off as a timepiece meant to do anything other than trap the vain and rich into hollow pruchases they will never properly respect.
Look at this and count the diamonds...it costs 310,000 dollars and the tourbillon isn't even visible: http://www.gemnation.com/base?proces...&watch_id=1465

Reason: even the sky moon at 1.6 million has no visible diamonds

Re: Let's Talk Watches
I have still to see the REAL value of a tourbillion. For the money (if I had it to spend) I'd rather the minute repeater.
Thanks for starting a new thread.
