Can anyone tell me the deal with buying a 40 year old watch? Just randomly picked this one, I like the dial. http://www.chrono24.com/zenith/zenit...-id3694868.htm

It hits a lot of the points, gold, very dressy, not super expensive, mechanical. I'm not a huge fan of the plexiglass and I wouldn't scoff at a 38mm size but beggars can't be choosers and a Calatrava is out of my range. How's maintenance and reliability, upkeep, that kind of stuff with these?

That's the trick with vintage pieces. You just can't tell. You roll the dice. It might run worry-free for 10 years, or maybe the crown falls out the day after you get it.

I was googling "military watch" etc but could not really find anything exciting.

I like the IWC designs, not a big Rolex fan.

Any suggestions for baller automatics under $10k that survive a dive in the swamps?
The two Rolexes discussed above seem perfect to me - the Rolex GMT Master II or the Explorer II: http://search.jomashop.com/search#?p...f=&isort=price

Not stricly a watch but it has a strap, you can wear it and it tells the time! It's Martin's $150k guitar with a watch in the headstock....

If y'all don't read WUS, there are a bunch of lightly used Tag Aquaracers returns for ~$800-850 on Amazon Warehouse right now. They go for like $950 used on the private market.

Love it. The only thing I don't like about it is that I never wear anything else since I acquired it.

Strongly considering trading my 1st gen black bay red and hulk for the new black bay bronze and pelagos LHD (or the blue pelagos with in house movement) + some cash.

I never wear the Hulk and where my blnr 90% of the time so I wouldn't really be missing much.

What do you guys think?

Black Bay Bronze is amazing. Just saw one today. Didn't catch the price. The Pelagos didn't jump at me sitting next to the Bronze. MSRP was $4995CAD iirc. I'm sure there are considerable discount for Tudor.

BLNR>Hulk. Everyone and their dog has a sub.

I don't understand the destro appeal, do you want to wear a watch on your right wrist?

Pelagos is gorgeous. The blue or black, though the 4 lines of text on the new in house version is a bit overbearing. But you already have a sub so idk

You'll regret getting rid of the Hulk, would certainly keep that.

I love the Pelagos but not at the expense of parting with Hulk. How often would you wear Pelagos over BLNR?

I would stay pat with what you got or trade up BB, Hulk, + cash in to something from the big 4.

Given that you (with good reason) wear the BLNR so much, I think the play is to make the trade and sell the Pelagos. This will leave you with BLNR and Black Bay bronze, which is a pretty versatile combo imo, plus ~6k to spend on something to diversify your collection a bit.

Genuine question. Who are the big 4?

The usual big three are AP, VC, and Patek. Lange, I guess, would be the 4th? Google indicates that's not a common phrase indicating a known group of 4, though. I found a website that use the term to refer to Breitling, Rolex, AP, and Patek, which obviously isn't how the poster was using it since the guy already owns multiple Rolexes.

Love the Bronze; I'm in line to get one too so I like your idea.

The rest of the Black Bay line doesn't appeal to me as much, except for the Black and Dark. Basically, all the new ones.

These days i consider Lange to be the 4th. They certainly are #1 or #2 in terms of interesting references for me and their design language is entirely unique (all precious metal, no sports watches, uncompromisingly Teutonic).

Historically only PP VC and AP.

to be honest, IDK how much wrist time it would get over the BLNR, but ime it is always different then what I expected prior to having the piece.

the next move up the ladder is a 15400, but the rest of my collection does not have good trade value and I like them too much to part yet.

I also don't have the disposable income that I did 2-4 years ago so moving up may take a while...

The 15400 is a great watch. I am saving up for my "big purchase" as well. Havent bought a watch in 5 years.
