Nice description! I've been using a $30 pair of Sonys that go way into the ear
- where are you using them? always at home, or out and about? open means people around you will be able to hear them quite clearly, and they won't block sound out. closed means people around you won't hear them, and they'll block sound out to varying degrees. open typically sounds a bit better, but no one uses open headphones outside.
Mainly home use so I don't care about others hearing.
- do you care about looking like a dork while wearing them?
lol, I don't care what they look like

I will hopefully be using these while lifting weights at times so they'll need to fit securely but I won't be running or doing anything jarring with them

I think I am in the camp of wanting to hear the music how the artist intended.

I've read a little about headphone amps, are they necessary for optimal sounds? How much of an improvement do they provide?

i'm really not an expert so i strongly think you should do your own research.

https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD.../dp/B0042A8CW2
https://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-.../dp/B000F2BLTM
https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technic.../dp/B00HVLUR86
https://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-.../dp/B002DP8IEK

these are all good headphones in that price range. some are open, some are closed.

the question of an amp is tricky. you can likely get away without it, but it's really going to depend on the exact device and which headphones you go for. it's not that they won't work, they just might not go loud enough, and might not sound as good as they should (but to what extent will depend). either way i'd buy the headphones first, and grab a small cheap fiio amp later if needed.

if you had said 'i'm just looking for a nice general pair of headphones for house, some tv, some music, some computer use' i would have unequivocally recommended the h598. the only thing that makes me not do is the importance you place on rock music. a lot of people think most sennheisers are 'boring' and don't have enough bass.

lastly, personally i wouldn't buy a nice expensive pair of headphones and use them whilst lifting weights.

Thanks Yeti, I appreciate the time and advice. I'll check out those links

I ended up buying Yeti's top link, the Sonnheiser 598s. They should be here tonight, looking forward getting them. I'll probably be back later with amp questions, lol

50ohm impedance is relatively low, so you definitely won't NEED an amp. Your phone, ipod, laptop, etc will drive them just fine. That doesn't mean an amp won't improve the sound quality, but not having one won't hinder your ability to listen to music.

I just ordered another pair of mobiles to augment my Klipsch in ears... Sony z7.

I am hoping to catch a little bit of that Sony z1r magic at a fraction of the price.

Post pictures when they arrive on tuesday.

I've had them for a couple hours now. First of all, I'm blown away, goosebumps blown away. I've never had anything high end so the quality difference is huge. The only possible negative I have is that in a couple songs at pretty high volume (classic rock) I might have noticed the bass drum being a little distorted. Is this something an amp would fix?

Edit: I'm getting plenty of volume on my Samsung S6 and laptop

Welcome to the audiophile world It's amazing what even a moderately nice pair of headphones can do for you. I still remember the first time I listened to music with my Grado SR60s and noticing new elements in every song

Yes, that is exactly the type of thing an amp would help with.

Only difference he'll see is needing to use a lower volume setting. Those guys were designed without an amp in mind.

Sony did manage to capture some of the Z1R magic in these Z7's

great sound, bass is slightly unwound and I can tell these BIG drivers are very power hungry, but they deliver.

Thinking of adding a pair of noise canceling headphones but strictly for the purpose of canceling noise... Like if I want to work in dead silence. Any recommendations for that particular need or are they all similar in that regard?
06-25-2017 , 09:31 PM
has been covered in the thread tons and tons of times. they are definitely not all the same.

decide whether you want over ear or in ear. in ear is better for sleeping on planes IMO. then buy something by bose, likely qc20i, which should be pretty cheap given a newer model is out

I would add SONYMDR7506 as well

Hey guys - looking for a rec!

I want to buy some headphones in the $50-$100 range. I don't know if it's a thing or not but I'd like something that has BlueTooth and a wired option. Would mostly used wired to listen to music on my phone, but I'd like the BlueTooth option. If I had to choose between the two I'd go for wired since BlueTooth tends to eat my phone's battery. I use my phone on the go quite a lot, at the gym etc. so something that was relatively portable would be good.

Might be in the market to replace my HD201's soon as the jack's become a bit iffy, length of the cable aside (far too long) they've done what I want them to do fine, namely be an entry level upgrade on whatever crap came with my phone to use on my commute and occasionally using it on the PC. What's currently good on a small budget?
08-20-2017 , 04:45 PM
party,

Wireless headphones kinda suck until you get to the expensive tier, but these JBLs are supposedly decent. A friend of mine these Sony's and likes them.

Give this head-fi post a look and see what works for you.

six,

What's your budget, what kind of sound signature do you like? For the cheaper end, Phillips SHP9500 is solid. Up from there is the Sennheiser HD598, which regularly go on sale for $100. Then in the sub-200 realm Beyerdynamics DT770 is well regarded, but more v-shaped (more bass and treble) than the other two.
08-21-2017 , 05:58 PM
DT770 has a pretty long cable, fyi. Great headphones though.
08-22-2017 , 04:13 AM
598s are open, don't buy those for any sort of commute

as an aside, i discovered the existence of this earlier this week. it might be of interest to people in this thread:

Oh, I missed the commute part. They have a closed version, though.

Since the Phillips are open as well, I'd suggest the ATm30x. If you can afford it, bump up to the m50x or the HD598c.

re: HD6XX

I have a pair from the first run and they're awesome. Exactly like the HD650 in every way except for the color. Same build, same parts, same sound signature, even built in the same location. Depending on what you're going for, these are likely the best sub-$400 headphones you'll find, and they scale well with tube amps.

Anyone got recs for wireless workout headphones?

Seems the latest high end ones are finally decent. Is that right?

Im looking especially at Jaybird X3 and Bose Soundsport.

Will be mainly using for audio books rather than music.
11-30-2017 , 03:59 PM
Bragi headphone for all the way wireless.
12-01-2017 , 04:55 AM
Bought the jaybird X3. So far have been great. Super confortable, good sound. No issues with battery.

Being wireless seems to make me use them more. Much easier to just pop in for 5 minutes while walking around when i have time.

Haven't tried a workout yet. Will report back.
