Headphones!!! Headphones!!!

I just got the Sennheiser Rs120 wireless headphones. The clarity on them is great, but the bass sucks. It somewhat ok at a medium volume, but if you turn it up the bass breaks up pretty bad. Is this standard or did I get a ****ty pair?

Does anybody have experience with the Bose Triports and the Bose Quiet Comfort 2's? I've have the Triports for like 4 years and I really really like them, but they start to give me a headache after I've been listening to them for a while in the car, on a plane, etc. They don't have noise cancelling (although it's not like you can hear anything when listening to them), but the QC2's do. Anybody know how well the QC2's cancel noise when no music is on? Will they solve the headache problem? Are the acoustics exactly the same? Would upgrading (mine are in perfect condition) be a waste of money?

I know you guys aren't crazy about Bose, but I really like the sleek design and think that the sound is incredible.

HD 280 Pros for $70 at Amazon now. Good enough deal to get them?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to buy a pair of headphones to complement my new ipod. FWIW I have read this whole thread and I have a few pairs in mind but everytime I go back and re-read different pairs jump out at me and I can't find the perfect one, so I'll let EDF choose for me. Here is my situation.

- lots of my music is ripped or just not gonna be really high quality mp3s
- I don't have a very trained ear for music so I won't really be able to appreciate a really nice sounding pair of headphones
- I walk around with my ipod virtually everwhere I go when I'm outside my apt, and its always on unless whenever it can be. I can easily use my ipod 8 hours in a day, probably average around 3, so they need to be really comfortable even when used for several hours
- I tend to be a little rough (accidentally) with things, I will probably drop them on occasion so they can't be too fragile
- I spend lots of time in the library so they can't be open
- I absolutely hate earbuds. They never fit my ears and they really hurt after a couple hours listening.

Overall I'm probably expecting to spend <$100 on these but I'm certainly willingly to go higher if it will make a difference (though like I said, I probably can't even tell the difference between ok and great headphones).

Any reccomendations are appreciated. I've been trying to pick out a pair for about 2 months and I really just want to get one now!

Scotty - the big problem is you lose a lot of good headphones when you can't have an open-pair.

I also hate earbuds - they are always very uncomfortable to me.

Head-fi has these closed headphones as recommended in your price range

- Sennheiser HD201 ($22)

- AKG K81DJ ( $54 ) - bassy DJ headphone

- Sony Mdr-V6 ($71) A very neutral headphone. Good mids, highs. No bass bloat.

- Sennheiser HD280 ($80) Extreme isolation in a closed Headphone. Slightly anemic bass.

- Audio Technica a500/700 ($80 and $120) Very balanced overall sound. Good for rock and metal. Speedy, controlled bass. Cheap pleather pads.

- Equation rp21/rp22x ($85-$90) Plenty of awesome bass. Slightly recessed mids, good highs

I've only heard the Sony V6's, and only thought they were OK. I'd probably give the AKG's and the Sennheiser's a try and see which you like better.

For everyone interested in the Sen HD280s: These are not headphones for listening to music. They sound terrible with harsh mids and no bass. They are made for DJ'ing or recording, when you need either isolation or bleed-reduction.

My trusty old HD570s are reaching the end of their 10 year run, and I'm in the market for a new pair to take their place. Too bad they don't make them anymore. Time to go back and read this whole thread....

Ok so thanks for the response dreams. I've spent several hours the last couple days researching and reading about headphones, the trouble is I'm so ignorant about this stuff that even that just confuses me more sometimes.

Anyways I think I've narrowed it down and I decided to get this pair of

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PX-.../dp/B000089GN3

and then also get one of the following 2 pairs

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-...4006043&sr=8-3

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...9GN3B0006DPMU4

So can EDF choose a pair between the last 2 for me? I saw the comment above about not using the HD280 for ipods, but my music is generally not bass heavy so would I notice? again, comfort is a big thing for me, as well as some degree of durability.

Given your last sentence, the Senn's are it for you. They are comphy as hell and the Grado's are known to be prone to breakage. Do you need sound isolation, though? If not, I'd suggest the HD 555's for 10 bucks extra.

EDIT:

The comment about the Grado's was in general, not specific to that model. Also, just noticed that there was a slight price jump for the 555's. 100 bucks, so they might not suit your fancy.

Thug Bubbles, thanks for your response.

Is sound isolation what keeps the sound away from other people. or keeps the outside noise away from me? If it is the former (which I think it is) then I do need it as I will use these in the library/planes/classrooms/etc, so I can't get the 555's.

FWIW though my roommate last year had the HD 555 (don't ask me why, he is nothing even close to an audiophile) and I remember really liking how they felt.

Looks like I will go with the collapsible PX 100 + the HD 280. I will order tonight unless someone here strongly suggests otherwise, and I will post a TR after having used them for a while.

P.S. In my hours of reading about headphones recently, I have heard many people say that good headphones will require a burn-in period to reach their full potential. Will either of my pairs need this? Will I be able to notice an improvement? Should I be doing anything specific (i.e. playing music through them non-stop for a while) to hurry this process?)

Ok so a while ago in this thread I had said I plumped for the HD555's well I got them for a very reasonable £50 which is about $100. Unfortunately it was from an amazon marketplace seller and he ****ed me about and so now has given me a refund. Well I saw the HD595's for about £75 which is around $150 and I thought **** it (good price in general?) , I have been waiting 2 months I might as well treat myself.

I will post my thoughts here when I get them. Thanks for all the advice on the thread in general guys, hopefully these live up to expectations.

You can go through amazon to get your refund (at least you can for the US version amazon) if the reseller screws you or doesn't respond. I've done this three times when the seller would not respond to my emails. It's called Amazon A-Z guarantee.

scotty,

When i said sound isolation what I meant to ask was if you required closed headphones (which is when music you are listening to leaks out to other people who are around you). The 555's have tons of leakage, but that also increases the quality of sound. Looks like they don't suit your needs, though. Let me know what you think of the 280, as I'm thinking about getting a pair for work.
02-28-2008 , 04:20 PM
No thug he did give me a refund it was ok. Its just he didn't tell me right away that he had no more available and that it being listed was a mistake and instead ****ed me around for about 3 weeks before giving me my money back . i now have my order in for the HD595's and am excited to use them.
03-02-2008 , 02:54 AM
Does anyone know what the best pairs of closed headphones are. I am going to be doing a considerable amount of traveling (on planes), so I am going to need a solid pair that doesnt leak sound. I have heard that most closed headphones have a limited soundstage; are there any exceptions?

I have been considering:

-Sennheiser HD-280
-Beyer DT770 pro-250
-Beyer DT660
-AKG K271 Closed-Back Studio

Which of these is best, and are there any others I should be considering?
03-02-2008 , 01:23 PM
If you read the rest of the thread the HD-280's are highly recommended closed backed headphones.
03-04-2008 , 07:14 AM
uh, i'd go shures. doesn't look like $ is an issue here.

I have two sets of "nice" headphones.

For portable use:

Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 4vi, made specifically for the iPhone. Sound is very good but falls somewhat short of great. While the sound is extremely clear and detailed, these headphones lack a bit in bass. Being able to control music/answering the phone via the button on the cord and the fact that I got these for about $65 (retail $150) make up for the downsides.

For home use:

Beyerdynamic DT-770. These are well known for being "bass cannons", and I can't say the rep isn't entirely undeserved. I prefer a good amount of bass, and while at first I was a bit overwhelmed by it, after a hundred hours or so of break-in they've mellowed out quite a bit. The overall soundstage and clarity aren't quite up to par with the Super.Fi's, but I feel these are quite good headphones, and not too expensive at $200 from Guitar Center.

Just discovered this thread the other day, and was wondering if someone can recommend a nice pair of headhones

They are for computer you - that being mostly music and then some movies and games. Therefore they don't have to be particular portable.
The music will mostly be 192 kbps WMA, and CDs.

First of all, I need a proper soundcard for my computer. Right now I have three choices:
1. Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music
2. PRODIGY 7.1 HiFi
3. PRODIGY HD2

Secondly, the headphones I have been thinking about purchasing are the following:
1. AKG K 240 Studio
2. AKG K 601
(3. AKG K 701 - this one is only if there is a sensible reason to buy it for my needs)

Right now I am leaning more towards the Creative SB and a pair of AKG K 240 Studios because it is the most affordable and the easiest one to purchase online (most accesible). But which soundcart and which pair of headphones should I buy, and can you recommend some other brands or product of either?

I bought these a few months ago and here is the review I promised.

Overall, I like them. They started off a bit stiff (my head is quite big though) but I'm breaking them in and they are starting to feel really nice. However, these are BIG headphones. When walking around in public, I must look like a huge idiot with these things on, but for me its worth it. I don't have a lot of headphone experience, but I would recommend these to anyone looking for a fairly solid set of phones for <$100.

I also bought the Senn PX 100. These are the collapsible ones. I took them on a trip to Guatemala, they were awesome. The quality was VERY good considering how portable they are.

LOL... the big headphones aren't meant for wearing in public really.

I keep a cheap pair of KSC-75's for when I head out - but the PX-100's and other similar headphones are great options also. (though the open-style can be obnoxious to others because of the noise)

haha I know, but like I said, its well worth it for me, and I'm sure I don't like music half as much as many of people in this thread. Today I got to campus and realized I had forgotten my 280s at home, started kicking myself.

I use Ultimate Ears Pro 5 or super Pro 5 or whatever they call the ones that are one step below custom when Im running/traveling. For listening at home, on a plane, or when playing live I use Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's. The cord is really long but they are really comfortable and sound great.

My old headphones are really busted now so I'm looking to purchase a new set for probably ~$70-100ish.

I've been thinking sennheiser because I know they're quality etc, and the hd555 seem pretty sick but a bit pricy, and I've also seen the hd280pro's which seem to be nice, and also it seems they come with the larger plug so I can use it with my guitar amp as well.

The main use of this will be on the computer, so using it with amp etc are all secondary concerns. Is there a serious difference in sound quality between these two headsets? Is there a model below the 555's that are still excellent but a bit less pricy (ex: how are the hd515's? etc)

Thanks.

For best sound quality, you really want to go with an open-style headphone. The 280's are closed, so unless you have a specific need to keep quiet ( dorm, etc ), I'd definitely go with the 555's.

Looking at buy ing the Bose quiet comfort 2 headphones. they are $300 though... anything out there similar but cheaper without the bose name? Most ly just going to be used while grinding online and playing live at casino
