Re: EDF Wine thread
I like wine a lot. I'm not as knowledgeable as some others on here, but I keep notes on almost everything I drink. Here's something I had recently:
Producer: Lindeman's
Wine: Bin 90 Moscato
Grape(s): moscato
Vintage: 2011
Region: Australia
Notes: golden, dehydrated urine color, sickly sweet, like candy, oily
Rating: yuck
My rating scale has 5 levels: yuck, drinkable, good, great, and incredible. I've got notes on ~800 wines, and this was one of the worst I've ever had:

Re: EDF Wine thread
One thing interesting about wine is that it is so subjective. My enjoyment of it depends on my mood, the company I'm with, the food I'm eating, and so on, and so on.
Below are two notes on the same wine I had at two different times, and my enjoyment of it was quite different. I'm in a wine club that does monthly blind tastings, and once we had a duplicate bottle. So, of the 6 bottles we tasted that night, wine #2 and wine #5 were the exact same wine. People were mad at themselves that they had such different reactions to the "two" wines.
Producer: Dr. Konstantin Frank
Wine: Chateau Frank Celebre
Grape(s): riesling
Vintage: NV
Region: USA/New York/Finger Lakes
Date: 8/31/09
Notes: sweetish, smooth, tiny bubbles, uplifting
Rating: great
Date: 6/15/12
Notes: dark yellow, soft bubbles, overly sweet
Rating: drinkable

Re: EDF Wine thread
To be fair, a lot can happen to a wine (especially a white wine) in 3 years time.
But that said I've definitely experienced what you're talking about before, even on the same vintage in a relatively short time frame. It's like the wine soaks up the environment you're in and affects your enjoyment of it accordingly.

Re: EDF Wine thread
any recommendations for riesling in the $30 range?
Also, why does it seem like Gewurztraminer is not a very popular varietal? Is it because the majority of Gewurztraminer is fairly sweet?

Re: EDF Wine thread
without knowing what's available in your area, it's near impossible to know what wine to recommend

Re: EDF Wine thread
again, it's insanely difficult to do this without knowing what state your in. Various states have very different shipping laws. It would be a lot better to post some links to stores that you would want to buy from

Re: EDF Wine thread
I typically use
http://www.specsonline.com/cgi-bin/showpage?pageid=main
you can search by wine region but not by grape apparently. oh nm, I can just put varietal in the search field.
I'm in Texas.
Also, are there any typical pronounced characteristic differences to Alsatian riesling vs German Rhein Riesling vs Austrian Riesling vs American Riesling?

Re: EDF Wine thread
being in texas, I would also highly advise against shipping anything in for a good while. I can take a look later. I can also take a look at graileys later

Yeah, everything I bought in Oregon is on shipping hold til September/October time frame.
Also, screw all you guys in states where you can order online and have it shipped to you. I think GA's rule of "you can have it shipped to you, but only if you order in person" is worse than just not allowing shipping. Such a ****-tease.

My experience with these is that you have a window right after release, and then they shut down for a few years.
If you're willing to go up to $35 I like AJ Adam a lot. $18 for the Thanisch Bernkasteler Badstube Kabinett 2009 seems like a steal, and the "Dr. Pauly" (this has to be Pauly-Bergweiler) Bernkasteler Badstube Spatlese 2008 for $32 should be great, Stefan Pauly is making terrific wine. JJ W-S Kabinett 2007 for $27 isn't bad.
I don't see any here but I've been incredibly impressed with the last few vintages of Schloss Lieser, a former underperformer that has finally started to deliver. Worth looking for as the wines are great and price hasn't kept up with the current quality.

Re: EDF Wine thread
just going down the list, so everything is going to be in alphabetical order
amoeba:
if you want some new world cab, the amavi cab is a good shout IMO.
You can't go wrong with the argyle brut. Don't expect full champagne quality, but it's a really good domestic sparkler at a good price
the 2010 ayers is a little on the high side, but is a good grab. Especially in that of the few 2010s I've had, I've really liked them
actually, better idea since this is a pretty massive list for under $35. What do you normally like to drink and what do you want to investigate further?

In my opinion, comments like these:

can lead to responses like these:

I mean, I've been drinking wine for a few years now, riesling is one of my favorite grapes, and German riesling in particular is one of my favorite beverages. And even I had to use Google to figure out that by "JJ W-S" you meant Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr. (And for those still confused, Joh. Jos. Prum is the producer of this riesling that comes from the Sonnenuhr vineyard in the town of Wehlen.)
It's cool if y'all want this to be a place for experts to chat about wine. But it seems like there's enough newbies on here (including me) that we should try to remain accessible across the novice-expert spectrum.
