Re: EDF Musicians!
I like that the Rokits are front ported - I don't really have space to put my setup in the middle of a room - but I A/B'd them against a couple of others at the local music shop and thought they had a bit more of a bass emphasis and a bright sound than some others. More like stereo speakers as opposed to monitors. They are in my price range though. Before I get there I have to get my Firestudio working though, having sync issues with that even though I checked carefully for compatibility on my firewire card beforehand.

A lot of people (me included) don't think rokits translate very well. The equator D5 is a project monitor they only sell themselves to keep the price low. If you were buying those thru a retailer they'd be equivalent to $600-$1000/pr. monitors. Read some reviews. They have a 60 day money back guarantee also.

Re: EDF Musicians!
I've worked in a budget studio with Rokit's and I don't think they're bad, per se, but they definitely seemed like the least neutral, natural sounding speakers of all the ones I tried, except for the low end M Audio stuff which is poorly regarded as well. I may well opt for those D5's prana, thanks. Would you be able to comment on those relative to the Prodipe Pro Ribbon series or the Fostex MKII? those are some others that i've seen recommended by audio folks.
There was a slightly higher-end KRK monitor in the store that I really, really liked, can't remember the model number or name or anything but they sounded noticeably better than the Rokits.

Re: EDF Musicians!
I haven't worked with them. I'd seriously suggest at least reading some reviews about the D5s and think about ordering them with intent to just return them if you don't like them since there is a 60 day guarantee. I was posting from my phone before or I would have quoted the letter from their page.

Hello,
We've had many calls and emails asking us how long we will extend the introductory price of $299.99 on the D5s. The original plan was to announce the distribution of the D5’s through traditional dealers and distributors at the January 2012 NAMM show and with that the end-user price would have been increased substantially. But the plan changed when our direct online sales grew far beyond our projected sales numbers. Word of mouth quickly spread thanks to an extremely exuberant blogosphere. Gearslutz, Reaper, Studio Central and a host of other Pro Audio blogs have said wonderful things about these little monitors.
By getting to higher production numbers we have been able to reach an economy of scale that has reduced our manufacturing costs. That reduction in cost combined with the upward sales volume has allowed us to project profit at the current $299.99 selling price. Our official statement is: “If it works we see no reason to fix it. The big winner here is the end-user who will continue to be able to purchase a high quality, professional product for a price that’s well below the products normal market value.”
So, the price of $299.99 for a pair of D5s will remain until further notice.
Thanks so much for the support.

Through normal retail distribution channels, with our current BOM (Bill Of Materials) and the cost of each link in that sales chain (Distributor, Rep, Dealer), the D5 would cost the end-user no less than $749 per pair ... with performance that exceeds that of other competitive $749 per pair products.

Re: EDF Musicians!
some FYI on my album - you can check out the facebook music page for some samples -
http://www.facebook.com/russbrownmusic
was done in a Pro-Tools 3 studio that is more studio than home as far as the sound and engineering goes - Andrew Bird did some of his stuff there a couple albums back and I got a pretty good rate -
All I really care about is songwriting -and I was gonna make a folk album of the songs acoustic but eventually amped up about 5 of them
Core electric is a Gretsch Black Duo Jet running thru a Fender 50's tweed - the distortion is natural after you turn past 6 or so -
I recorded the drums and electric guitar together but had to bring bass in later for the 1st day - the 2nd day I did the acoustic tracks, and I think almost all of them are live takes - the other days were overdubs
I haven't been experimenting as much with gear lately - I have an old 1st Gen Mackie D8B and the HDR24/96 - (well past obsolete right now) - and I bought an 8 track Tascam dp-02 just to have something to sketch with - might try some Nebraska'ish type stuff keeping it down to 4 tracks and an echoplex
as opportunity permits I will post pics of some of my toys - after 15 years I've been able to get a few but I had to trade a few too

Re: EDF Musicians!
if I recall correctly, the theory behind the playground forums is that they are temporary, and replaceable. right? IE: snooker, programming, etc...
anyhoo, I mostly screw around in reason 3 these days on my keyboard, trying to get commercial/over-compressed dance/pop music sounds. I used to suck at guitar but I have not played for while.

Re: EDF Musicians!
I ordered a pair too. Decided I want a golf membership, new computer, and other things this summer so didn't spend $$ on the Q8s. 8s could be too much for the size room I'm working in now anyway. I may add a sub down the road though. Have yours shipped? You can check on the order/status section on their site I think. Mine still says processing.
Here's something to be aware of when you first get them and this review has a bit of interesting discussion about coaxial drivers:

When I received my pair of D5s, I was initially vexed by what I perceived as extra sibilance around 7 kHz, but throughout several weeks of use, this subtle “bump” slowly disappeared. (I later asked Equator founder Ted Keffalo about this, and he confirmed to me that this peak indeed exists on new units, but it smooths out after extended use.) Once the D5 settled into character, I found its midrange clarity congruous with my coaxial driver expectations.

It's been over a decade since I broke in a pair of monitors. Have any links or advice? If I remember correctly I just ran pink noise and different music through them for a few days at reasonable volume.

Re: EDF Musicians!
I got an email from Ted today that the container was delayed on the docks and they are waiting to unload, test & ship. So hopefully we are just a few days away.

Re: EDF Musicians!
Got mine today. Currently have them playing some random stuff at a moderate volume. Haven't turned them up but they really make me wonder what I was doing selling my other monitors before I had a pair again. The speakers I was using just suck compared to the clarity I"m hearing already. I really want to add a sub since I'm decking out this room with absorption panels, etc. but I won't be able to afford it til summer probably. I've been on a spending spree this month.
