This is, on purpose, a mixed list of all types of films. I am not saying these are the 'greatest' films-- although many of them surely are-- simply my favorites.
Martha Marcy May Marlene, is a film about a girl(Elizabeth Olson)'s time living in a cult and the period afterwards. It's told in a non linear fashion, alternating from her time spent in the cult, to the time spent with her sister and brother-in-law afterwards. The film has excellent imdb/RT/MC credentials discordant with it's worldwide gross of just over $1mm. It's an interesting film, I haven't seen one like it. It has dark moments but is realistic, it feels like the screenwriter based this on his or someone else's experiences. It's a good film, but not great, I don't regret seeing it but given my high expectations I left disappointed. 3.5/5
Good season for films so I'm planning to watch a bunch. Last night I saw The Descendants. It's a very well reviewed film, 90% on RT and 7.8 on IMDB. I thought Clooney was fantastic in Up In The Air, and he's > 50% on Intrade to win the Academy Award for best actor, so I had high expectations that were not met. It's a perfectly decent film, but rarely special, there are some weak acting performances (Lillard, Forster) and Clooney is underwhelming - he was adequate but I don't understand how it's considered the best male acting performance of the year. The Descendants is the kind of film where two years down the line, it's going to come on TV at 9 O'Clock, so bored couple are going to see it on and say 'hey, want to see this film? It's got George Clooney in', watch it and conclude 'that was pretty good!'. It's not a great film. 3.5/5

i felt much the same way.
it didn't help that i watched win-win the night before.
it's really hard to rally behind george clooney as a protag.....particularly when he's wealthy.
i'm tired of the developing cliche of the awkward chubby daughter as well, we get it- people loved olive in little miss sunshine.
the movie just kind of sat there for me. it wasn't great, it wasn't bad, it just was.
i guess that the thing that it was missing to me was true heart. it just didn't feel like an honest film to me. pretty disappointed 3/5.
The Graduate. I watched this because I loved the movie poster but didn't want to buy it unless I loved the film.
Firstly, what's with film spoilers in the movie descriptions on Netflix? i.e
Dustin Hoffman (in his first major film role) turns in a landmark performance as a naïve college graduate who is seduced by a middle-aged neighbor (Anne Bancroft)
Spoiler:
but ends up falling in love with her beautiful, young daughter (Katharine Ross).
The non spoilered part seems like a totally necessary 'let's explain what the film is about' part, while the second thing is a twist that doesn't happen until some way in to the film. My enjoyment of the film was definitely negatively affected by reading the spoiler, thanks Netflix!
I really need to watch Guess who's Coming to Dinner, because, man, I have no idea how Anne Bancroft didn't win the Oscar for best actress. She absolutely nailed the role of Mrs. Robinson. One of my favourite acting performances ever. The scenes with her and Dustin Hoffman are gold. The rest of the film falls short. My biggest gripe was that
Spoiler:
Benjamin goes on one date with Elaine, she seems very sweet and is way hot but doesnt offer much on the personality front and then he wants to marry her?
That storyline felt really rushed, and needed more time for it to develop and feel authentic. The final act was very fun and includes an outstanding sight gag. I did not buy the poster. 3.75/5.
In the Loop. An Anglo-American political satire written by Armando Ianucci. Yes, this rung all my bells. Those who enjoy Yes Minister or The Thick of It (of which this is a spinoff) should watch this. Actually unless you've seen those and didn't enjoy them, you should watch this. 4.5/5.
