Good HW bout from Saturday.

Gus, Maia, and Frankie I'm betting on no matter what the vegas odds are. The rest I'm not so sure.

Damn it'd be all 4-0's if I hadn't voted for Masvidal haha. I obviously expect Maia to win, just picked Masvidal because that's who I'd prefer to win. I'll take slick footwork and boxing over backpacking all day in terms of entertainment.

also wtf I just checked, Maia is like +115. How is that possible? He must have a injury or something. He opened at -175, moved from -130 to +115 in a couple days.
05-03-2017 , 11:42 PM
Dogs across the board for this guy.

I'm the only dissenting vote on everything but Masvidal currently.

i like all that but 211 is just around the corner. and courney casey is fighting! i predicted her victory last time she fought, and she will win again.

JDS is +110 to stipe's -130 which is pretty silly, i think stipe will win but you gotta take JDS at that price! maybe the guy typing in the oods wrote a + on accident .

demian maia +105! how!

i also like yair +120.

sergio pettis +310 against cejudo is intriguing but it feels right, i'll stay away
05-04-2017 , 02:55 AM
where did you get those lines?

Why bet on Yair? For beating up BJ Penns corpse? Prior to that he didn't look impressive against Caceres and as much as I like Caceres he's not very good.

Also Yairs TDD is pretty suspect, not something you want to have against Frankie Edgar.

I mean maybe father time catches up with Frankie, but on paper this seems like a terrible match up for Yair. What am I missing?

i dunno what to tell you, i think he's gonna smoke frankie like a fine joint filled with cannabis

Height and reach advantage, best kicker Frankie has ever faced (tallest fighter, too, I think), explosive, IMO the most athletic fighter in the division at this point, and has shown dramatic improvements with each subsequent fight. On the other hand, while Frankie is slowing down he's still improving, and I think it's amazing that he had a back injury and a knee injury during the Stephens fight.

Yair beating Cacares was most notable because Alex was his first real UFC test and Yair was exploding into those dynamic kicks through the entirety of the fight. When you can still be flashy at the end of a five round fight, that's bodes well for your future as you dial in on the skill.

The UFC took their time with him, and it's paid off by the way he's improved through his UFC career. His hype has been all about potential, and I think this fight could be his coming out party.

I would take a flyer on Adrade if she hadn't been KO'd before, but she has, and will most likely be again vs JJ. Is there a female Maia or Frankie for JJ? I'll wait for that.
05-04-2017 , 04:57 PM
I think being a kicker might work against him. Aldo decided to throw 0 kicks against him, because Frankie is just so good at catching kicks and turning them into takedowns.

He is definitely a beast of an athlete and improving fast, so that is certainly a wild card.

If he beats Frankie, that's a new young exciting contender in the division who's obviously very elite. Though I'll be very sad as Frankie is one of my favorites. But he is getting old with lots of miles on him, so he's gotta fade sometime.

GGG-Canelo signed for Sep 16 which was the original plan for the Mayweather-McGregor sparring match.
05-07-2017 , 11:13 AM
2017 has been the best year boxing has had for a while (last night's fight non-withstanding). Can't believe we're actually getting this fight before GGG is 39.

To the Boxing experts:

Could somebody explain the brouhaha over Canelo/GGG's failed match-up a few months ago? I remember reading a post that was going nuts on Canelo for messing with the lineal legacy of his belt, but I didn't quite understand it.

Sergio Martinez was lineal 160lb champ, had a few defences, got old and lost to Miguel Cotto at a 159 lb (yes really) catchweight. Cotto defended against Canelo at 155 lbs, one lb over the Light Middleweight limit. This was a joke since i) the lineal middleweight title was contested at what was not middleweight ii) Golovkin had been the clear #1 contender for some time.

Canelo said he would fight GGG but then decided 160 lbs was too big & defended the "160 lb" lineal title against 147lber Amir Khan at a catchweight of 155 lbs. Then he decided 155 was too big so he fought Liam Smith a top 10-15 LMW for a 154 lb belt. 160 lbs was still too big for Canelo but last night he fought at 164.5 lbs v. Chavez Jr. Now he's fighting GGG at 160lbs.

Si.

To add to PGUK, a little over a year ago, following his previous fight, Canelo said in the ring "I'm from Mexico, and in Mexico, we don't **** around. Put the gloves on him (GGG) and let's fight now".

Shortly thereafter, Canelo was told by the WBC (who's MW belt he then held) that he needed to fight GGG (who, at the time, was the WBA/IBF MW champ). Canelo (or really, his promoter, ODLH) said "nah" and surrendered the belt to GGG rather than try and set up a fight between the two.

Canelo is still the "linear" champion, although as mentioned he did insist on defending his title at "Canelo-weight" or 155 (MW is 155-160), but GGG has 3 of the 4 belts at MW.

and now it makes perfect sense why dana and co. are nipping all the negotiation from lower tier fighters in the bud. it would eventually evolve to this point and dana would commit suicide having to renegotiate everyone's contract constantly.

Up to and including the Cotto fight Canelo's resume was outstanding. The last few fights were disappointing but he's going to fight GGG two months after turning 27 and has already faced Trout, Mayweather, Lara & Cotto as well as a bunch of B+ level fighters like Khan, Kirkland, Angulo & Rhodes. If he beats GGG I think he'll defend against tough opposition.
