Probably because falling to your back after getting hit is a more natural reaction. Lot's of fighters fall to their back when hurt as it's a better position to defend and recover in.
Falling on your face to me means you have lost complete control over your body and it shut down aka you're unconscious, even if briefly. That isn't necessarily the case when falling to your back. Also it leaves you in a MUCH more vulnerable position.
I mean just look at Roy getting up. He doesn't know the fights been stopped yet and he isn't covering up or looking to get into a defensive position. He's slowly trying to push himself up leaving his face completely exposed. Pretty confident if the Ref doesn't stop it Roy eats 5-6 more punches then it's stopped.
Maybe like 5% chance he could survive by turning his head away and turtling up and recovering, but not worth it with the increase risk of damage.
