Re: EDF MMA/Fightin' February '12 Konichiwa Thread

So my sister is having a house warming party this Saturday and it's kind of a big deal to her.

I told her I will only be able to attend on the condition that I can order and watch UFC 143 on their only TV. I may be the only person who cares about MMA there.

Does this make me a bad brother & or person?

Pic since I know it will be asked for until it's given.

While it's tough to see any of those guys losing, people were saying the same when Brock, Lyoto, Silva, GSP, and BJ were the belt holders and it didn't take long for 3 of those guys to falter after looking unbeatable.

re: JDS/Nog GOAT talk

It's really unfair to compare the two since we've seen Nog's decline phase, and JDS is relatively young in his career. Nogueira also beat Bob Sapp when that actually meant something. (And laugh all you want, it did mean something.)

This is how my thought process would work:

No brainers:
Fedor
Nog

Former champs with meh records, but solid arguments:
Randy
Coleman

Rising stars with top 10 OAT talent, but no decline phase:
Cain
JDS

Quality HW careers:
Cro Cop
Barnett
Sylvia

No clue how to rank given era/HW record:
Severn
Shamrock
Gracie
Reem

Fedor and Nog are the only guys I feel comfortable putting in any sort of spot. Those are the #1 and #2 HWs of all time, right now. Cain and or JDS could usurp them depending on how their careers play out. Randy's probably my number three right now, but with a loose grip. Coleman is probably somewhere in 5-7.

Cro Cop, Barnett, and Sylvia probably fill out my bottom half, though a lot of that depends on how I feel about the last four guys. Reem probably gets a spot if he beats JDS. Severn and Shamrock have such weird career arcs. And Gracie isn't technically a heavyweight, but he won all those tournaments...

Also, EM2 brought up our MMA draft. I checked out the results recently and remember thinking my team ended up looking pretty bad given how fights played out. I also had the last pick.

Re: EDF MMA/Fightin' February '12 Konichiwa Thread

Best all time:

1 Emelianenko
2 Noguiera
3 Crocop
4 Barnett
5 JDS

Hon mention:

Mir, Overeem, Couture

Current:

1 Dos Santos 8-0, 5!
2 Overeem 10-0-1, 2
3 Velasquez 7-1, 2
4 Mir 6-2, 3-4
5 Werdum 5-2, 2

Fringe:

Barnett 8-0, 1
Cormier 9-0, 1

Record is since about 08. Quality of wins is foremost along with recency

You can't be serious. The last Nog fight was an exception to his entire career. Aside from the Lesnar fight where he was saved by Miragliotta, it was the only time he's ever faced adversity and won, the only comeback of his career. Even if you do count the Lesnar fight, 2 fights hardly makes him "one of the best" at what you described.

Now Nogueira was really one of the best at that.

to be honest, the decline phase is mostly irrelevant when discussing a fighters greatness. Who cares about Ali losing to Trevor Berbick? Who would rate Joe Calzaghe over Roy Jones jr just because the former had the sense to quit before he fell over the edge as an athlete?

It makes no sense to do so in my opinion. It's like ranking Maradona based on how he played when he was 40 and coked up.

To me it's all about what they accomplished. Who they beat, how they did it and when they did it.
Jds may not be there right now, but his major wins are close to rivaling those of nogueiras already.

I agree with the sentiment though. It's just too early to rate JDS/Cain as historical heavyweights.

I'm glad we've moved from useless weight cutting conversation into GOAT talk

Koschek is a decent fav against Pierce but I think there's still value in betting him. I don't see Pierce winning unless he pulls out a Paulo Thiago

http://www.thefightnerd.com/assault-...rt-once-again/

Instead its weight cut & HW GOAT talk. Yet you guys make fun of Sherdog and the UG... lol.

Lucky I like MMA so much I post on pretty much all known MMA forums

According to Las Vegas police, Overeem allegedly shoved a woman in the face at about 3 a.m. On January 2, just a few days after the victory over Brock Lesnar that put him in position to challenge for the title. The shove from Overeem, who is 6-foot-5 and weighs in excess of 260 pounds, caused the woman to stagger backward.
This seems absurd. I'd like to know more after our discussion on weight cutting finishes some time in May.
