Just seems strange. Why are you opposed to wearing a suit?
I don't have a really nice tailored suit. The ones I own are off the rack. I play poker for a job, so I don't have a ton of nice clothes. I plan on buying a few nice suits in the future (closer to when my friends start getting married). I just don't like the idea of going and spending a ton of money on a suit to wear out on New Years, when I probably won't wear it again for another year, I also would feel self conscious wearing one of the off the rack suits I own (they fit well, It is just they are not high quality, and I think they look poor on me).

I own a few pairs of nice quality dress pants and casual pants. So I was thinking I could combine those nice pants with a cardigan + shirt and tie. I figure this would be formal enough that I won't have to worry about dress code, It also would be somewhat unique to at least the group I am going with.

Also, NYC is going to be cold for New Years, although the venue is indoors and I would be spending most of my time inside, I still anticipate doing some walking outside or at least waiting for limo outside, smoking outside, etc. And, who knows where the night will take you. I figure a Cardigan will provide me with similar warmth to a suit jacket, all the while being not to warm while inside the club.

Is this a really stupid idea? Should I just go with a suit?

Re: EDF Fashion (and Fashion Deals) Thread

Yeah bbwaamp I agree with snagglepuss, you still have time to get at least one of you suits tailored before NYE. I'd say wear a dark one with a more unique shirt.

hendrix, I don't think you'll be able to tailor a sweater, (especially a cashmere one) but try taking them to a tailor and see what they say. If you don't mind potentially losing ~$60 (sweater price +tailoring) it might be worth just doing one and seeing what your tailor can do with it.

M, Try on a pair of longwings before you decide. They look very different on your feet and the standard Barrie last is huge. I think the rounded toe looks casual enough for jeans but I can't imagine getting black. #8 or Ravello.

Bergdorf has a much better scarf collection than Barney's IMO, but Barney's has one particularly nice brown Colombo scarf this fall.

How was your Geneva experience?

All, Those cardigan pictures look awful. They're not supposed to look short and fitted.

Anyway, the key to staying warm isn't necessarily a coat. A sweater plus a shell can keep you warm in <0f weather. Good hat, gloves, socks and a scarf can definitely keep you feeling warm.
+1 living my whole life in minnesota has taught me a pretty good amount about staying warm in effing freezing weather, I've been super lazy and haven't bought a hat/gloves/scarf for this winter...wtf is wrong with me.

Looking for fairly warm stuff that won't funk up my hair (hat) so that I can wear it in public settings. I have a black overcoat that I almost always wear, so either black or kind of yellow/cream color for the gloves/hat/scarf was what I was looking for.

Re: EDF Fashion (and Fashion Deals) Thread

I'm a fashion noob, tired of wearing jeans and golf shirts or graphic T's. I'm looking for winter/spring clothes for every day use (I live in Arizona so I tend to think of winter and spring as the same season since temperatures are so similar). My budget is fairly low, I'd prefer to spend no more than $100 per piece of clothing but will make exceptions as needed. I'm 5'9" and fairly thin fwiw.

It seems like Banana Republic has a selection of cardigans, half zips, chinos, basic T's, etc. that fit my budget but can I find better for less money? Also, thoughts on these loafers?

They go for about $100 at BR and come in this color plus black and a darker brown.

i've had a bunch of BR shoes and while they are very comfy at the start they've all fallen apart in fairly dramatic fashions having to do with their amazingly poor build quality, and quickly.

Re: EDF Fashion (and Fashion Deals) Thread

Looking for some help.

Is there some kind of rule for matching shoes to the rest of your clothes? I'm pretty sure watch/shoes/belt are supposed to match right? But how do I pick between either brown belt/watch/shoes, or black belt/shoes/watch for going with the rest of an outfit?

Re: EDF Fashion (and Fashion Deals) Thread

Recently saw 500 days of summer (super good imo) but one thing that kept standing out in my mind was the guy's wardrobe. Skinny tie+sweater vest+button down.

Is it too much for day-to-day outings you guys think? do people actually dress like this casually? Looks classy and I'd love to wear something like this to work/semi formal event, but would it look like a douche wearing this on an everyday basis?

if you wear your clothes comfortably and confidently, you will never look like a "douche"

Re: EDF Fashion (and Fashion Deals) Thread

Can't say I agree. In fact, I think every single person who has ever been called a douche wears their clothes comfortably and confidently.

If you are comfortable and confident in a pink polo wiht a popped collar with a white polo with a popped collar underneath it, you are a douche.
