Let's not overthink the sock. Match it to the trouser and forget about it. If you don't have a match just wear navy or charcoal and be done with it.

lol...I was just in a John Varvatos shop and the sales guy I trust said that if you're wearing black shoes, wear black socks. Do not match the pants. If you're wearing brown shoes with a brown/tan/khaki pant, just go with a similar earth tone - you don't have to match either perfectly, but be in the vicinity.

He gave two reasons: the matching the sock with the pants is old school and falling a bit out of fashion - but it's still ok. Plus, People are mixing a brown shoe with a black belt and vice versa these days, so you dont want another color breaking things up - match it with your shoe.

Who knew socks were so complicated?

haha I guess I'm old school then for emphasizing the sock-to-pants matching imperative.

Getting to the bottom of critical issues like this is why I love this forum.

The advantage to pairing the sock with the trouser is that it creates a longer line down the leg. Since I don't have a lot of height to burn I choose to match it this way.

I agree but I definitely see what the sales guy meant about black socks with black shoes, too.

I am looking to get a leather travel bag, small enough to be a carry on for flights. I want something durable but I'm not sure where to look (other than online).

Something like this maybe:
http://www.amazon.com/Floto-Vecchio-...831097&sr=8-19

Any suggestions?

If you're interested in a more rugged, less refined leather bag, you might be interested in saddlebackleather.com. Filson bags are great, but they're made of waxed canvas so maybe that doesn't fit the criteria. Krane bags too.

My t-shirt collection is woefully dated. Suggestions on where to start without delving into creepy emo/hipster/ironic douche wear.

I've been wearing french cuffs + cufflinks on the weekends with jeans both tucked in and untucked and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Thoughts?

With the right jeans and shoes it's fine IMO.

I think it could be pretty cool as long as it still looks like you casually threw it on.

There is no casually throwing on a french cuff shirt with cufflinks. It's affected by nature and not meant for something like jeans. Nice sport coat with slacks, yes. I tried wearing a french cuff shirt with cufflinks without a jacket once and it looked pretty lame.

I was sort of thinking the opposite. With more dressy-looking fitted jeans, and say wingtips or some sort of dress shoe (like my Ricard boots above ) it might look good.

I have to sort of side with Skunk though. Every time I have worn a french cuffed shirt with jeans, I have ditched the links on the way out the door and rolled up. It just hasn't felt right.

well that rules out a lot. I love Oddica and their shirts have got me a lot of compliments, but it's fairly hipster

Kinda creepy IMO. But I am like a ****** with my shirt collection so I feel like an ascetic offering advice to Henry17. I may just wear a bunch of shirts and see what whores like.

Zod- Is that brown one called Bird II or something? I put myself on the wait list for that like 2 years ago LOL. I love simple centered designs like that from a good artist.

Thremp- lastexittonowhere.com is a pretty cool site if you are looking for graphic tees. You have to like movies though.
