The madras ones caught my eye. Not sure if they are lined though.

Just get a not too crazy patterned rip curl or billabong suit. They look good and last forever, solid quality.

I've got the black/white ones and they're great.

Any solid color with an 8-12 inseam will be fine. RL makes some good choices, so does JCrew, Parke & Ronen, Falcanable, and Katin.

This pretty much all boils down to personal preference, I don't think other people really care much about what trunks you have on. Personally I hate polo's large conspicuous branding/crests, I think all those florals/plaids suck, and I would never wear anything madras except maybe a belt. On that page the only 2 I like are the seersucker boxer (I have the brooks brothers version of this one) and the gingham boxer, but for something like a pool party or day at the beach I'd still pass.

Personally, I think madras looks hideous on anyone not very tan. Like of Indian or African heritage.

I disagree that these look good, but again it's personal preference.

I think Spenda is like 5'9? Unless he's all leg a 12 inch inseam is pretty long.

Would've bought a pair of Sundeks last year but I'm too cheap.

There always seems to be someone at the beach with a metal detector finding stuff that fell out of peoples pockets. For that reason I'd go with a zippered pocket like this pair. Even some of the Velcro pockets only have a square patch of Velcro that doesn't seal the whole pocket and makes it possible for pocket contents like change to fall out.

I also think that long shorts on men are too much like women's capri pants...do not want. If a guy is wearing shorts and you can't see his knee caps then something has gone terribly wrong.

Yeah, that could be. I'm about the same height and own a pair with an 11" inseam which hits right at the kneecap. I'll probably go to an 8" or 9" this summer.

I'm thinking about buying these Allen Edmonds for casual wear. Do you think they are formal enough to work with black pants and a button down shirt (my normal daily wear)?

Those shoes are quite formal and would work with a suit. Why would you wear brown shoes with black pants? I certainly wouldn't make that my go-to normal attire.

Why would anyone wear black pants? Are you a waiter or a funeral director?

I'm talking about dark pants, not pitch black. Like a dark blue suit.

Two fashion things that amaze me to this day (a) chunky rubber dress shoes and (b) black pants, jackets, etc. outside of black tie.

those shoes will work with navy. they won't work with black. grouping all dark pants under "black" is just silly.

Why didn't you say you had navy pants then?

Yes, those shoes will match. Make sure you're wearing a matching belt, and (if applicable) watch strap.

They're a bit formal for casual wear. Maybe the AE Strands instead?

chunky rubber dress shoes i agree 100%. black jackets too. but i do have one pair of slim black chinos that i will wear sometimes with a light shirt and a gray tweed jacket or something like that. in a business-business type setting that wouldn't be great but my office is pretty casual so something like that is actually dressing it up a bit.

Stupid question: Is there an easy way to know when a department store is having a sale? Do they advertise these on the web, and are they usually national? If not, how do I check if the specific Banana Republic near my house currently has a sale?

Just call the store and ask what their current/upcoming sales are. They should be happy to tell you unless it's an insider sale like Bloomingdales does sometimes.

I’m starting a new job in August and am rethinking my work attire. I’m an academic, so fashion standards are pretty low. The last few years I’ve been wearing cotton khakis (of different colors), collared sports shirts (or nice merino sweaters during winter), and dress shoes. This has been my standard outfit. I would really like to start wearing better dress shirts most days. I’m tired of the so-so fit of the sports shirts. I want to wear nicer dress shirts to work that have a more tailored fit. My question is pants. Is it OK to wear slightly dressier cotton khakis with nice dress shirts? Or should I go to dressier wool trousers? I’m 35, 6’2”, and fit (180 pounds) if that matters. I will not be wearing a tie or suit as that would be overkill for my work environment. I think I would prefer to wear nice cotton khakis with the dress shirts. It seems like that would be OK, but I’d just like to double check. Thoughts? Thanks.

Yes. Go with flat front, no cuff pants.

Make sure the shirts fit properly: Little to no side of waist overhang.

i think dress khakis look good with nicer shirts but i try to stay away from really bold patterns and colors. something about the relatively flat fabric of the pants vs. very bright shirts doesn't work for me. i go a little more conservative with the shirts if i'm not wearing a jacket or tie.

Oh hey guys.

Noob question: is a jacket-less tie a de facto faux pas for a business casual work setting? Thx xoxo

Yeah, don't like a tie without a jacket/sweater.
